Shadow Labyrinth, Pac-Man’s gritty Metroidvania, launches this summer

Shadow Labyrinth, Bandai Namco’s refreshingly gritty take on Pac-Man, is launching on July 18. First announced at The Game Awards 2024, Shadow Labyrinth isn’t exactly what anyone expected for a new Pac-Man game.

Rather than the traditional, ghost-dodging and orb-eating gameplay, Shadow Labyrinth takes things a step further with exploration elements more in line with Metroidvanias like Hollow Knight. While the game is never explicitly described as such, all of the elements are there. You explore, fight enemies, and grow stronger by consuming fallen foes, and expand your abilities to go proceed deeper into the labyrinth itself.

Pac-Man, known as Puck in this game, can combine with the player character (the Swordsman) through an ability called Phase Shifting. While that helps you explore, fusing into the Gaia Form — a sort of mecha suit with Puck at the center — will give you increased combat abilities that allow you to rival even the strongest enemies.

Shadow Labyrinth – Release Date Trailer – Nintendo Switch

One thing to note: Pac-Man isn’t actually Pac-Man in this game. The name Puck is a reference to the title’s original name, Puck Man. The story isn’t totally clear on what Puck is or why he’s in the maze, but that’s for you to discover while you play the game. There’s a lot to be found, especially since the player wakes up with no memory of why they’re in that world. The few hints we’ve been given suggest a deeply sci-fi storyline.

And for those fans that spotted the similarities to Amazon’s Secret Level episode, know this: it was no accident.

Bandai Namco had teased a 2025 release date, but it wasn’t until today’s Nintendo Direct that we received a firm window: July 18, 2025. That’s only a few months away, so you don’t have to wait long to get your hands on this unique spin of an iconic video game character.

Casio’s Pac-Man tribute watch is about as retro and geeky as watches can get
Casio A100WEPC Pac-Man watch.

There are retro watches, and then there’s Casio’s newly announced Pac-Man tribute watch, which is about as geeky and retro as watches can get. The A100WEPC, to give it its full name, has not only been given the full Pac-Man theme treatment but it’s based on the Casio F-100 watch first released in 1978, the first quartz timepiece released by the company. That’s enough retro appeal to attract gamers and watch fans.

Casio has chosen the A100 watch as the base for the Pac-Man model, which is a metal-bodied reimagining of the resin-cased F-100 from 1978. The overall shape and design of the watch remain almost identical, right down to the four widely-spaced buttons below the small digital screen. It’s not a Bluetooth-connected watch like some of Casio’s recent G-Shock models, and an alarm, calendar, backlight, and stopwatch, plus water resistance, complete the feature list.

Pac-Man 99 is pure battle royale chaos — in all the right ways
Pac-Man 99

After several attempts to make a Pac-Man battle royale game work, Pac-Man 99 may have finally cracked the code. Nintendo’s new freebie for online subscribers is the latest in its line of surprising retro elimination games. Like Tetris 99, it fits classic gameplay into a Fortnite-style mass-multiplayer structure.

As far as battle royale experiments go, Pac-Man 99 is more of a winning combination than Nintendo’s limited-time Super Mario 35. While that game struggled to fit the platformer into a multiplayer gauntlet, Pac-Man is a much more natural pairing with Tetris 99’s mechanics. In fact, it only emphasizes the best thing about Pac-Man.
Navigating the chaos
Pac-Man is all about reaction and adaptation. In the original arcade game, players would have to clear a board full of pellets. Being quick was only half the battle. Getting through some of the game’s later stages involves efficiency more than anything. Players have to optimize their routes to grab the most pellets possible without having to turn around and go back for another pass.
