Call the Midwife's newest member to take up the habit is The Rig star Molly Vevers. Vevers was teased in the preview for Call the Midwife episode four when she introduced herself to Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) as Sister Catherine Cantwell, and it seems as though she'll be sticking around for a while.

Vevers' debut comes after her season-two stint in the Martin Compston-led show The Rig, which premiered on January 2.

On returning for another season Vevers said (via East Lothian Courier): "It was really exciting coming back for season two, as the first one was left on such a big cliffhanger."

She went on to add that her character Heather was introduced in season one of The Rig as a new recruit in the oil and gas industry and that it was "great to see" Heather improving in the new season.

Now Vevers steps in as the new recruit in Nonnatus House, but just who is Catherine Cantwell and how does she fit into the ensemble of midwives?

Who is Call the Midwife's new member, Catherine Cantwell?

Molly Vevers joins Call the Midwife as the new district midwifery trainee Sister Catherine Cantwell. Along with being a trainee midwife, Catherine is also a postulant in the Order having not taken her First Vows.

It's hinted that Catherine will find being at Nonnatus House quite a struggle. Initially, she tried to ignore her religious calling but ultimately could not. Nonnatus is a daily reminder of the life she used to live.

The BBC teased: "Sister Catherine keeps her distress from most of her housemates, though Sister Julienne is aware of the situation.

"But the closer Catherine gets to taking her First Vows, the more afraid she becomes. Is she doing the right thing? Can a life lived in the service of God and strangers ever justify the pain she has caused to those who have loved her all her life?"

Despite Catherine's inner turmoil, Vevers spoke highly of her experience filming Call the Midwife, stating: "In my first episode, I was filming a lot with the lovely Linda Bassett (who plays Nurse Crane). I was so grateful to do that in the first few days, because she was just so kind and welcoming and helpful.

"In my first few days, we had a birth to do, which is quite scary when you haven't done it before.

"But Linda's just such a calming, warm presence, and she really helped me during that."

She added: "Playing a nun, I also had a lot of scenes with Jenny and with Judy Parfitt."

Call the Midwife airs weekly on BBC One on Sundays at 8pm and streams on BBC iPlayer.
