The Merc with a Mouth finally got his own way and brought his sweary, ultraviolent, fourth-wall-breaking shtick to the MCU. Here’s everything you need to know about Deadpool & Wolverine.

That’s right, if you’re watching the Marvel movies in order, you now need to send the kids out of the room. Wherever Deadpool goes, blood, gore, and profanity is sure to follow, and he’s messing with the sacred timeline.

Better yet, the new movie also brings Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine back for the party. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot to take in, with Easter eggs littered throughout.

So, let’s take a look at who’s in the cast, what goes down, and what the critics are saying about Deadpool & Wolverine. Warning: there are some spoilers ahead!

Who’s in the cast?

Ryan Reynolds reprises his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool and he’s joined by Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.

Jackman returns to the role seven years on from his last outing, in the critically-acclaimed Logan. You may be wondering how Wolverine is alive in Deadpool 3, seen as he died in Logan, but it’s simple really: this is a Wolverine variant, and there’s lots of them.

Reynolds meanwhile continues to don the red suit he made famous in 2016, and rounds out his trilogy by messing up the MCU (in a good way).

They’re joined by Deadpool regulars Morena Baccarin, Karam Soni, Leslie Uggams, Stefan Kapicic, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, and Rob Delaney.

As for Deadpool 3 villains, you’ve got Emma Corrin playing Cassandra Nova, and Matthew Macfadyen playing the twisted TVA agent, Paradox.

You’d better look away now if you don’t want any of the Deadpool & Wolverine cameos spoiling (though Marvel did a good job of that at SDCC 2024 anyway).

Big names make big appearances in the film. There’s new faces, like Henry Cavill playing a variant of Wolverine, and Channing Tatum finally getting to play Gambit.

Meanwhile, Chris Evans returns as Johnny Storm from the Fantastic Four, Dafne Keen reprises her role as Laura (AKA X-23), and Wesley Snipes has one last outing as Blade. They’re joined by Jennifer Garner, who takes on the mantle of Elektra one last time.

And finally, among all the chaos, there’s the Deadpool Corps. This army of Deadpool variants is led by Lady Deadpool, voiced by none other than Blake Lively.

Here’s the full Deadpool & Wolverine cast:

All the trailers

The first teaser trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine dropped during the 2024 Super Bowl on February 11, 2024, and the full trailer was released on April 22, 2024. You can watch it below.

The full Deadpool 3 trailer was much more Wolverine-focused. It referenced 2017’s Logan, showed us his full classic costume, and gave us a first look at the dynamic between him and Wade.

Turns out, this Wolverine variant has let people down. That doesn’t stop Wade from being determined to recruit his help, though, and so the team-up is on. Life is a mystery, everyone must stand alone… until Deadpool forces his way into your life.

In the teaser trailer, Wade calls himself “Marvel Jesus”, references Disney, and is tracked down by the TVA.

The footage also revealed just how closely connected the Merc with a Mouth will now be to the greater MCU timeline as we head towards Marvel’s Phase 6.

Another trailer was released on June 8, with a few more clips. Most notably, fans spotted Lady Deadpool’s legs, confirming that she’d be appearing, and sending the internet into a frenzy.

Deadpool & Wolverine plot

Deadpool & Wolverine has the Merc with a Mouth recruiting a team of multiversal misfits to help save his timeline from extinction.

Essentially, with Logan dead, Wade Wilson’s timeline has lost its anchor being and it’s dying. Paradox wants this process to happen quicker and more efficiently, but he’s willing to let Deadpool jump across to the sacred timeline before that happens.

You’ll have to watch Deadpool & Wolverine to fully appreciate what goes down. Just know there’s timeline hopping, lots of fights, lots of deaths, and some hilarious team-ups for Wade and Wolverine. You can read our Deadpool 3 ending explained if you want more details, though.

Deadpool & Wolverine reviews

We loved Deadpool & Wolverine here at Dexerto, with our own Cameron Frew giving the movie four stars and describing it as “a must-see MCU experience.”

Our Deadpool 3 review praises the film’s approach to nostalgia, highlights just how joyous and funny it is, while also having an emotional side to it.

However, we did take issue with the visuals, which are “flat, diluted, and even uncinematic at times.” And, as is now standard with a lot of Marvel movies, the third act is a little messy.

Meanwhile, Deadpool & Wolverine has a Rotten Tomatoes critic score of 79% (from 304 reviews), and an audience score of 97% (it’s definitely a crowd-pleaser).

A MetaCritic score of 56 is low, but to be expected, as that’s not quite the demographic, really. Its IMDb score is holding strong at 8.2 from 92,000 ratings.

Is it R-rated?

Despite Deadpool now falling under the Disney umbrella, Deadpool 3 is R-rated and won’t need to dial anything back.

That’s pretty good news for Deadpool fans, who only know the Merc With a Mouth as having a foul mouth. Let’s just say, Deadpool & Wolverine is not suitable for kids.

Director Shawn Levy was committed to that R-rating from day one. He and Reynolds have both maintained throughout that Disney didn’t hold them back, and it shows.

Deadpool & Wolverine runtime

The film’s running time is 127 minutes, or 2 hours and 7 minutes, according to AMC Theaters’ listing.

That makes it the longest Deadpool film in the series so far. For reference, the first Deadpool movie was 1 hour and 48 minutes, while Deadpool 2 was 2 hours long. That leaves plenty of time for multiverse hopping antics.

Will it be on Disney Plus?

Deadpool & Wolverine will be released exclusively in theaters at first, but it will be on Disney Plus in the months later.

The release will all depend on how financially successful the third movie is at the box office, but it’ll likely be at least a couple of months before it lands on the streaming service.

Before that, you’ll find it available to rent or buy digitally shortly after it leaves theaters.
