Enjoy the new sound of Baime, a project from Copenhagen’s gritty underground by
the DJ and producer duo Jens Christian Nørgaard and Mikael Melander.
Baime means fear in Lithuanian, but this story actually starts with joy. A joy of listening to
music, producing music, and sharing music with the world. That joy ties Copenhagen-based
Jens Christian Nørgaard and Mikael Melander close together.
Their joy for everything music-related brought them together in 2015 after Jens had just
started the Danish record label Blindfold Recordings while Mikael was part of the infamous
CPH DEEP music collective. Huge fans of a fellow Dane, Kölsch, they both had tickets to his
Q&A where they instantly bonded over their shared fascination.
Shortly after, Jens and Mikael formed a friendship that quickly turned into a partnership,
Baime was born. The name comes from the initial fear of trying wild new things and it serves
as a constant inspiration for the two to overcome their reservations, turning fear of the
unknown into joy. A joy that should be shared just like Jens and Mikael share a love for the
same sounds.
The small but dedicated Danish underground scene took the duo in immediately, and they
quickly rose to fame by playing all over the capital and the rest of the country. Not long after
their first studio session, they were invited to create their own club nights at Culture Box plus
the late, great KB18 as well as contributions to the legendary IG60 parties with CPH DEEP.
Soon thereafter, the duo was asked to play landmarks like Northern Europe’s biggest music
festival Roskilde Festival, German clubs such as the renowned Watergate and Ritter Butzke.
Even managing to fly all the way to Dubai to play at Soho Garden and they also got to play
at the top of the Copenhagen Opera house. Playing the international club circuit allowed
them to release tracks on Sincopat, Watergate Records and a a frequent flyer on Jonas
Saalbach’s Radikon.
Why has the duo become an instant phenomenon? They say it’s because experiencing
Baime is an invitation to move your body to a deep, proggy, melodic, free-flowing
soundscape. Just like a shared joy can turn into curious wonder and deep love, Baime’s
soundscape is constantly evolving, never boring, and always challenging the listener. What
do YOU like?
Now together in the booth, studio and on Blindfold Recordings, Jens and Mikael
show no sign of slowing down. They continue to keep their ears to the ground for the next
big sound as producers but also for the record label. Baime might mean fear, but this duo is
all about our shared love for music that actually means something.
