A discography of several hundred albums and a creative lifetime of around 30 years makes the 101 Strings Orchestra one of the most prolific and reliable names in instrumental easy-listening music of all time.
The ensembles recordings were built around popular and cultural themes, well-known artists and songwriters, TV or movie themes, songs originating from a particular country and of popular standards. During its evolution over the past 50 years, the sound of the 101 Strings has been built on a reverence for melody, a simple and fresh production, and a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere.
Founded by producer David L. Miller, the 101 Strings Orchestra was introduced to the public on Miller’s Somerset label in 1957. Miller found a way to present the sound and style of orchestras popular at the time, such as Mantovani, by hiring fine European musicians and made the 101 Strings Orchestra into a brand name. In 1965, Miller sold the whole 101 Strings package to the label Alshire (International). In 1995 Madacy Music Group acquired the complete Alshire catalogue and the 101 Strings Orchestra recordings today are exclusively owned by Countdown Media GmbH.
Countdown Medias’ vast archive is the home of the precious original master tapes and they have been re-releasing the fantastic original albums in an extensive series of digital reissues, bringing back the golden days of Easy Listening to a new audience of music aficionados.
