Today (28/8/20), Stockholm based artist and producer flyckt releases his new single “Summer Is Over” (featuring Paula Jivén). The track is lifted from flyckt’s debut EP Instant Gratification pt. 1, also released today, via Humming Records.
Taking inspiration from a wide spectrum of genres and sounds; across the EP track listing flyckt delves into intense, techno-inspired electronic instrumentation, uplifting electro-pop and melancholy ballads.
New single “Summer Is Over” falls into the latter category. A hopeful, wistful song written about the demise of a relationship, the track features vocals 16-year old Gothenburg singer/songwriter and TikTok star Paula Jivén. Led by a sweet guitar motif and backed by reverb-laden percussion - the new single shows another stunning side to flyckt’s artistry.
“Summer Is Over is a song about a dying relationship” flyckt explains. “It’s written about the wishful thinking that one day things are gonna be better; that you’re gonna wake up one day and feel every-thing you once felt. You know it’s over, they knows it’s over, but you’re hanging in there waiting for summer to come back.”
Citing the likes of Nicolas Jaar, SebastiAn and Bon Iver as influences, flyckt’s new Instant Gratifica-tion pt. 1 EP (released today via Humming Records) examines escapism, parallel realities, de-pression, a longing for acceptance, and the search for love and happiness - through a lens of at-mospheric, moody, electro-pop.
New single “Summer Is Over” is released today alongside a stunning film-noir styled video. Creative Director Sofie K Skoog said this on the video: “This video starring Klara and Olle from the Spotlight video was shot in the middle of the night with the assistance of fierce amounts of whiskey and real desperation. Thankful for Klara and Olle who embodied Rasmus’ lyrics and the fragility that was caught on film.”
Previously a member of successful Swedish band Urban Cone, flyckt (real name Rasmus Flyckt) sees this new project as a very different prospect. “It’s different in every way. It’s a lot scarier cause it’s a lot more transparent. I miss writing and performing songs together with my best friends, but on the other hand I can now do it just the way I want it. The music itself is much more personal as well – I put a lot more work into the lyrics this time round. It has to be genuine, and I have to be ob-sessed with my own songs - at least for a while”
flyckt was exposed to life in the studio from an early age. Growing up in a musical household; his dad a world renowned mixing engineer, flyckt recalls falling asleep on the sofa outside his dad’s studio, desperate to hear what he was working on. “I remember him eventually playing me the first mix of ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears when I was 11. He asked me what I thought. I said ‘I really like it, but you should have the guitars in the pre chorus a bit louder’. I was so proud when he told me I was right later on.” Not bad insight from an 11-year old, but it was that early grasp of production that has helped guide him toward becoming the undeniably gifted artist, songwriter and producer he is today.
“It’s raw, just like life itself,” flyckt says on the new EP. “Listening to Instant Gratification pt. 1 is like opening a window to my life. You may not like what you see, but at least it’s an open window. I’m not sure if love is a shortcut to happiness or self-fulfilling. I’m still trying to figure out what stimulates me, and right now it’s progress in music. Making people feel something.”
