The Last of Us showrunner and game creator Neil Druckmann has shared his thoughts on the possible fan reactions to the changes they’ve made in the next installment of the hit HBO drama. Season 2 will be based on Naughty Dog’s acclaimed video game sequel, The Last of Us Part II, which includes a major time jump featuring a now grown-up Ellie. The series is slated to return on April 13.
The Last of Us stars Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy Miller, and Rutina Wesley as Maria. The next installment has also welcomed new cast members to the acclaimed horror drama, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Young Manzino as Jesse, Isabela Merced as Dina, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny, with guest star Catherine O’Hara.
The Last of Us showrunner on handling fan reactions to Season 2
During a recent press conference, Druckmann admitted that he’s not really worried about how the fans of the video game series will react to The Last of Us Season 2. He stressed that he and co-showrunner Craig Mazin were more focused on making the right choices for the show.
“I’ve said this before, but I feel like the best way we could respect our fans and honor them is to not worry about them when we’re crafting the thing because outside influence or pressure doesn’t lead you to good creative choices,” said Druckmann. “Craig and I are just very meticulous in how we interrogate every moment, every creative choice and kind of look at all the options in front of us to make sure we’re picking as Craig likes to say ‘the correct one.’ And it’s a correct one for The Last of Us in this medium, which wouldn’t necessarily be the same correct one for The Last of Us in the video game format.”
Druckmann continued, “So the stress we often feel is with the resource that we have, with the time that we have, are we taking the best advantage of that to make the best choices for the best possible show?”
