In 2023 City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services (CoJ LIS) was chosen as one of the winners of the Google-sponsored Africa Online Safety Fund, which will focus on hosting a variety of programs in library spaces and online to educate the public on how to use digital tools and platforms safely.
This Mobile and Media Literacy campaign started in 2024, but will be expanded to all libraries, and communities are encouraged to attend any library group activity or workshop and learn about online safety for all ages.
The Joburg Libraries e-learning office will work with all regional libraries to organize community workshops that will include online safety awareness. NGO’s can also collaborate with libraries to organize these Online Safety awareness sessions within library spaces.
– Celebrating South African Digital Literacy Day with Online Safety as a Theme – October 23rd, 2025

– Outreach events: Visiting other partnering spaces such as schools, old age homes, and NGOs for people with disabilities,
– Online competitions focusing on Internet Safety.
This campaign presents an opportunity for libraries to educate communities about new technologies such as AI and how to engage with digital content safely.
About The Fund: The Africa Online Safety Fund, with financial support from Google.org, was established to support innovative existing and new solutions to address internet safety challenges brought on by the increase in device ownership and internet access. These challenges include privacy and security concerns, bullying and harassment, hate crimes, fake news, political targeting and manipulation, terrorist recruitment and promotion, and financial scams. While not exclusively focused, the Fund favors solutions that address women’s and children’s online safety specifically, as they are the most targeted communities in this regard. The Africa Online Safety Fund awards grants to organizations that address one or more of the safety issues the internet facilitates.
