Wilkes scored a combined five runs in the middle innings to get past the College of New Jersey, 8-4, on the road Tuesday afternoon in nonleague baseball action.

Wilkes had eight hits in the victory, led by two a piece from Luke Spencer and Zack Luksic. Spencer drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the fifth. Matthew Show added a home run in the victory.

Riley Jagger improved to 2-0 on the year, throwing 2 1/3 innings of relief to get the win. Wyoming Area grad Hunter Lawall got the start, striking out three in 2 2/3 innings.

Wilkes (6-4) next hosts Elizabethtown in a Saturday doubleheader at Bruggeworth Field.

Central Pennsylvania College 13, King’s 5: In Aberdeen, Md., Central Pennsylvania exploded for five runs in the third and added three in the fourth, pulling away from King’s at the Ripken Experience.

The Monarchs ended with 12 hits in the game. Jaiden Wanamaker was 3 for 4, while Troy Neff, Owen Ness and Jacob Sutton each had two hits. Zach Day added a home run in the setback.

Justin Hoadley was the losing pitcher, allowing four runs in 2 2/3 innings. King’s used a total of seven pitchers in the contest.

Softball

New Jersey City 8, King’s 5; King’s 2, Mississippi University for Women 1: In Myrtle Beach, King’s College split a pair of games in its season opener Tuesday.

In Game 1, New Jersey City scored seven runs in the third inning, and racked up 12 hits in the victory over the Monarchs. King’s was limited to three hits, as Kara Krouse had a double, and Paige Bergan and Colleen Shuler added singles. Courtney Grogan was losing pitcher, allowing seven runs in 2 2/3 innings.

In Game 2, Megan Matsko scored on an error in the seventh inning to lift King’s to the one-run victory. The Monarch had six hits, led by Meghan Marianelli’s double. Karleigh West, Harley Sullivan, Ellie Higdon, Cadee Munjone and Matsko each had singles. Berwick graduate Emily Novicki was the winning pitcher, striking out six and allowing just one run in the complete-game effort.

Women’s tennis

Wilkes University women’s tennis senior and Holy Redeemer graduate Tea Amerise was named Landmark Athlete of the Week for her play on the team’s spring break trip.

The senior went undefeated in Hilton Head, South Carolina, with three dominant singles wins at No. 1 against Johnson & Wales, Buena Vista and Mary Baldwin.

Amerise swept Johnson & Wales’ Hanna Christiansen 6-0, 6-0 on Sunday, and followed it up with a win over Buena Vista’s Taylor Fritz the next day 6-0, 6-1. She finished her spring break besting Gretchen Lutz of Mary Baldwin, 8-1.

Amerise also went undefeated in doubles play, picking up three wins with fellow senior Sydney Farmer at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 7-5, and 8-2.

Loras 7, King’s 0: In Orlando, the Monarchs fell to 0-4 on the year after being swept by Loras on Tuesday.

In the top match of the day, King’s Ashley Kenia lost in straight sets to Mary Breitbach at No. 1 singles. Carlee Dellose, Hailey D’Amato, Ellie Kalina, Emma Rooney and Betsy Allen all fell in straight sets.

Men’s tennis

Loras 6, King’s 1: In Orlando, King’s picked up one point in the singles’ portion of the match, but the Monarchs fell to 2-3 on the year.

John Toussaint picked up the lone point with a thrilling, three-set win over Diego Mejias at No. 1 singles. Set scores were 1-6, 6-4, 10-7.
