After spelling all three words correctly in the final spelldown, Courtney Collette took top honors in the Brainerd School District Spelling Bee. The seventh-grader moves to the regional bee, sponsored by the Brainerd Dispatch, along with finalists Aidan Breen, Jim Raboin and Charles Riley.

Many might assume that, with our recent bitter sub-zero weather, all area lakes are completely frozen. But there are at least seven open water areas, said Sheriff Dick Ross, who noted nine snowmobilers have gone through the ice in recent weeks. Fortunately, all survived.

The Brainerd National Guard unit, the 1st Squadron, 194th Cavalry, conducted change of command ceremonies last month. LtCol Benton Murdock, Garrison, passed command of the 816-man unit to Major Darwin Trees of Pequot Lakes. Command Sgt. Maj. Chuck Holst of Brainerd assisted in the ceremony.

Washington High School's Warrior wrestling team improved on an earlier conquest of Aitkin with a 28-16 victory in front of a packed house at the junior high school gym yesterday. Scoring pins were Tom Ebinger, Dave Borg and Dan Dechaine, while Ed Brophy scored a 4-3 decision over Aitkin's previously unbeaten Nile Hallett.
80 years ago (1944)
Lt. Henry Thayer, reported missing in action in Germany, has been heard from via short wave radio. The message, saying that he was well, broadcast from a German POW camp, was heard by a South Carolina woman, who then contacted Thayer's parents here. It is the first such radio message received from a Nazi war camp.
100 years ago (1924)
All persons who are desirous of making application for final citizenship are hereby notified that R.K. Doe, Naturalization Examiner, will at the clerk of court's office on February 4 for the purpose of examining all such applicants.

37/46: This truck belonged to Silas Hall's Transfer Line just after World War I. It was used for hauling freight from the NP (Northern Pacific Railroad) depot to stores around town as well as for other kinds of moving. The picture was taken in front of the railroad freight office. Before the truck, Silas Hal used teams of horses and wagons which he kept at 415 Main (now Washington Street). He launched a kite at 3 p.m. yesterday near the court house and it's still flying despite a near disaster when a truck caught the kite string. The weatherman says it will remain windy today.
