In systems biology and medicine a huge divide seems to exist at present between what ‘cloud castle architects’ anticipate and what their hard-working fellow experimental scientists can actually accomplish. The review articles in this collection published in Cell Communication and Signaling reflect on some of the current methodologies and results, providing a snapshot of selected aspects, with an emphasis on what can be done at present and what must still be accomplished to fulfill some of those very enthusiastic projections in the coming decade(s).
