Northern Ireland votes yes to Good Friday Agreement

The result of a referendum in Northern Ireland gives emphatic endorsement to the Good Friday Agreement. In Northern Ireland, 71% voted 'Yes', a significant majority which those in favour of the deal believed gave it clear authority. Unionist 'No' campaigners maintained that they had carried a majority of unionist voters. Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, Mo Mowlam, said that there was now the chance for a new future for everybody.
