A firefighter remains in critical condition Monday after suffering a medical emergency while helping to battle a Brooklyn blaze on Sunday.
Fire Department sources said the firefighter was stricken while battling a two-alarm blaze that broke out inside 1133 Lafayette Ave., a three-story residence, in Bushwick at about 11:30 a.m. on March 16.
The fire proved to be intense, spreading throughout all three levels of the structure, according to published reports. Video posted on the Citizen app showed firefighters on the roof of the building, cutting holes to ventilate the smoke and help battle the flames.
According to a joint statement from Mayor Eric Adams and Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker, the firefighter wound up suffering a cardiac arrest while on the job.
EMS rushed to the scene to treat the firefighter and then transferred him to nearby Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for further care.
Shortly thereafter, Adams and Tucker said in their joint statement that the firefighter was transferred to Lenox Hill Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
The Fire Department did not disclose the firefighter’s name or company assignment “pending complete family notifications.”
FDNY units brought the blaze under control just before 1 p.m. Sunday. Two civilians and two other firefighters suffered minor injuries, the Fire Department said.
FDNY Marshals are investigating what sparked the fire.
