Alfred Sisley is now recognized as one of the great landscape painters of the 19th century, and a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. He divided his time between France and England and the illustrations in this volume include the snow scenes of the Paris suburbs, his views of the flooded Seine at Port-Marly, and his paintings of the regattas on the Thames, which have been described as embodying the perfect moment of Impressionism.

Top reviews from the United States

The Phaidon Colour Library is an excellent series with vivid reproductions and very complete biographies of the artists as well as historical photographs. Buying these used is a very inexpensive way to build a library and, for artists, to get source material and motivation! The copy I received was in great shape. A real bargain! The editions on Klee and Bonnard and others are just as useful if you are into modernism.

Excellent photos

Very good prints and many of them from his early work to a more abstract late work. Detail photographs are very helpful to see his brushwork. General biography alongside the images is a good introduction to Sisley's life and works.

Very poor color reproduction. Colors were drab, dark and lacked the sparkle of his work. I have some of Sisley's work reproduced in othe books with much better results. Would not recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sisley; An English/French painter.

A wonderfully produced coffee table book with fine reproductions of Sisley paintings and expansive biographical text.
The copy is ex libris but in very good condition and very competitively priced.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sisley (Colour Library).
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2021
Sisley is still rather unfairly relegated to the “second division” of Impressionist painting, despite his popularity among collectors; he was one of the most faithful to the ethos of the movement and almost exclusively committed to landscape.
This paperback edition from Phaidon is part of their long-running series of monographs of individual painters which have been around in various editions since the 70s – this expanded edition dates from 1994 and contains 88 illustrations, 55 in colour. The reproduction quality is fairly good given that they have little changed since the first printing; they consist mainly of large full-page plates with descriptive text on the facing page – the standard format for the series.
The introductory essay by Richard Shone is illustrated with mainly black and white images and provides a useful biographical introduction to the artist.
A good (but basic) reference work on an artist who really should be better documented in more lavish English-language volumes than are currently available.
