Long story short, this game IS NOT Batman, it IS NOT Arkham and it does have performance issues and feels rushed in areas. That said there is fun to be had in this game, I just think you need to find the right value for it. Full retail, £65, this game is not worth it but if you can get the base game for £20-£30 I feel there's good value to be had out of the single-player experience alone.
The combat does differ to the Arkham series, notably a lack of an instant Counter button/attack makes you feel less adept than Batman. Possibly a direction choice but the constant dodging of incoming attacks without automatically following up with a counter makes you feel a bit cowardly. Other than that the combat is a little boring and limited to begin with but it does get more fun as you progress and unlock new abilities, but be prepared to rinse-repeat this with the multiple characters to make sure they're equally as skilled as each other. I recommend doing a session with one character and then switching to another to progress their skills evenly rather than focusing on one till maxed out. A pro of the combat however is a short press attack to quick attack or long press to heavy attack. I find this helps put each of your attacks in a more considered approach and keeps you in the rhythm better than Arkham, where you'd have a quick-press/slow-response heavy attack button. This addition stops you from button bashing brainlessly.
The enemies are varied enough and plentiful enough to make combat challenging, however in fights against many opponents I'd often suffered massive frame drops, to 1 or 2 frames per second. This made the game unplayable. You can prevent this though by setting your lobby to private (disabling online multiplayer) but this does mean you can't actively participate in what is a unique selling point for a Bat-Family game. The game is capped to 30 frames per second which might bug some people but in the midst of the game I paid no attention to it, however when frames drop from a typical low-grade for next-gen consoles, it's pretty unforgiveable. It might get patched in the future, of course, but nothing mentioned from DC or Warner Brothers yet.
In areas the game felt rushed, seeing duplicated cut-scenes for different characters (to the point where Alfred has EXACTLY the same response for Night Wing and the Red Hood on separate occasions). Or the use of a pop-punk cover for one mission and then no other licensed tracks elsewhere. And Jason Todd just felt like an entire after-thought, as if market research showed 4 player multiplayers sold better than 3 so find someone to add in there. If you ask me, I got the impression this might've originally been intended as a 3-character single player campaign but got redeveloped into a multiplayer late into the process.
Things to enjoy though are the suits. Lots of choice, unlocks and transmogrification. I wouldn't pay for the Deluxe Edition like I did. You'll unlock so many cool suits in game through regular progress, you'll forget which suit it was you paid extra for in the deluxe edition.
Overall, I'd say temper your expectation and try and get this game cheap and there's fun to be had. For £20 or less, this game's a bargain. At £20-£30 it's fine, okay. £30-£40 it's a disappointment but anything more than that is a rip off for the performance issues only, in my opinion. I didn't quite care enough about the story to find all the collectibles and the combat wasn't quite fun enough to lure me back to explore the multiplayer side of it. I doubt it'll be a game I replay but after playing God of War Ragnarok, this at least served as a good palette cleanser (any title was always going to struggle of GoW, so I'm happy it was at least a mediocre one).
Have had hours of fun and playthroughs with the four available characters.
Highly recommended.
