Osmanlı Devleti'nin egemenliği altındaki toplulukları din ya da mezhep esasına göre örgütleyerek yönetmesine " millet sistemi " denilmekteydi. 1 Osmanlı'daki " millet " kavramı bir dine veya mezhebe bağlı olanlar topluluğu anlamında olduğu için büyük ölçüde İslam hukukunu temel alıyordu ve bu " millet sistemi " de farklı din ve mezhep-teki tebaanın siyasal yönetsel ve yargısal ilişkilerini düzenleyen bir kurum olarak ortaya çıkıyordu. 2

THE CULT OF DIONYSOS IN ASIA MINOR
IN THE ROMAN IMPERIAL AGE

Making his presence, which can be traced long before the Archaic Age, deeply felt mainly in Hellas, Asia Minor and then in Rome throughout the ancient world, Dionysos, depending on the place and time, appears before us sometimes as a god of grape-wine, sometimes as a god of theatre and acting arts and sometimes as a religious power shaped according to the local needs, however, he has generally been a god of nature representing the fertility and abundance. According to the inscriptions, Dionysos was mentioned with many epithetons in Asia Minor of the Roman Imperial Age, and that he was a god of nature bringing abundance-fertility and his many other features can be observed by these epithetons. Depending on the long stated customs, the cult of Dionysos in Asia Minor survived throughout the Roman Imperial Age (especially in the II-III. Century A.D. with festivals, cult associations and structuring, artists (musicians, players, dancers) that served his cult. According to the written records, festivals such as Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris organized in the name of Dionysos were celebrated. Dance, music and play competitions were made in these festivals maintained by the rich citizens or directors and not commonly known cult rituals were performed. Besides the associations of synodos artists called by different names in different times in the large cities of the west, cult associations broad in scope such as thiasos, speira or cult member groups with large audience in various names were active both in worshipping and these festivals. In order to achieve this, undoubtedly, both artist associations and cult associations had to have a well organized governing structure. Names were given to the cult members according to the task taken. These members also had to pay a membership fee in order to be a member or to continue to be one. Actually, these fees were as important as the epimeletes in the mainta-nance of these associations. In addition, they were supported both mate-rially and spiritually by the Roman emperors or provincial governors. Although the paganic religious activities in the lands of Asia Minor under the control of Rome were left to the free will of the cities, they would not be strong without the respect shown for the cults of the emperors, emperor and the Roman goddess (Dea Roma). The worshipping of Dionysos could only develop with the close relations with the emperors and the Roman Empire. Correspondingly, supporting a paganic cult significant for the people, the Roman Empire gained the sympathy of the people and also kept them loyal to Rome. The deification of the Roman emperors began with General Marcus Antonius, who was wellcomed as “New Dionysos” on his arrival to Ephesos, and continued in the Roman Imperial Age. During this period the associations in Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias and Sardeis characterised Emperor Hadrianus, Commodus and Caracalla by this epitheton. Thus, they deified them by considering them equal with Dionysos. Dionysos also had common worship with imperial or Dea Roma cult besides the common paganic worship of Zeus and Dēmētēr. Like all other paganic religions, the cult of Dionysos broke down with the strengthening Christianity with which it had opposite doctrines and finally with the acceptance of Christianity as the official religion of the state. However, many features of the Dionysos cult continued to exist in Asia Minor both in Christian features and local cultures and traditions. Today it still continues this effect.

Arkaik Çağ’dan çok daha eskilere götürebildiğimiz varlığını, coğrafi olarak başta Hellas, Küçükasya ve sonraları Roma olmak üzere tüm Antik Çağ coğrafyasında etkin bir şekilde hissettiren Dionysos, yer ve zaman farkına bağlı olarak, bazı yerlerde üzüm-şarap tanrısı, bazılarında tiyatro ve sahne sanatlarının tanrısı, bazılarında ise yerel ihtiyaçlar doğrultusunda şekillendirilmiş dinsel bir güç olarak karşımıza çıkmıştır. Ama genel olarak bereket ve bolluğu temsil eden bir doğa tanrısı kimliğine sahip olmuştur. Yazıtlardan anlaşıldığına göre Roma İmparatorluk Çağı Küçükasyası’ nda birçok epitheton ile anılan Dionysos’un, bolluk-bereket getiren bir doğa tanrısı olduğu ve diğer başka özellikleri gene bu epitheton’larından anlaşılmaktadır. Küçükasya’daki Dionysos kültü Roma İmparatorluk Çağı boyunca (bilhassa M.S. II-III. yüzyılarda), öncesinden gelen bir geleneğe bağlı olarak şenlikleri, kült dernekleri ve yapılanması, kültüne hizmet eden sanatçıları (müzisyenler, oyuncular, dansçılar) ile varlığını sürdürmüştür. Yazılı belgelerden bu dönemde büyük ve zengin kentlerde hâlâ Dionysia, Lēnaia, Anthestēria, Trietēris gibi Dionysos adına tertiplenen şenliklerin kutlandığını; masrafları, epimeletes olarak bildiğimiz kentin zengin vatandaşları ya da yöneticileri tarafından karşılanan bu şenliklerde külte ilişkin dans, müzik ve oyun yarışmaların yapıldığını ve herkesçe bilinmeyen kült ritüellerinin uygulandığını öğrenmekteyiz. Bilhassa batı kesimlerdeki büyük kentlerdeki, farklı dönemlerde farklı isimlerle anılan synodos sanatçı derneklerinin yanında thiasos, speira gibi daha geniş kapsamlı kült dernekleri ya da en yaygını mystai olan çeşitli adlar altında toplanan geniş kitleli kült üye grupları hem tapınımda, hem de bu şenliklerde aktif olmuşlardır. Şüphesiz ki bunu gerçekleştirebilmek adına gerek sanatçı dernekleri gerekse kült dernekleri, iyi organize olmuş bir idari yapılanmaya sahip olmak durumundaydı. Bu derneklerde üstlendikleri görevlere göre adlandırılan kült üyelerinin, üye olabilmeleri veya üyeliklerini sürdü-rebilmeleri için ödemek zorunda oldukları aidatlar da vardı. Esasen bu derneklerin finansmanının karşılanmasında bu aidatlar, en az epimeletes’ ler kadar önemliydi. Ayrıca Roma imparatorlarının ya da eyalet yöneticilerinin hem manevi hem de maddi desteğini alıyorlardı. Zira bu dönemde Roma egemenliği altında bulunan Küçükasya topraklarındaki pagan dinsel yaşam her ne kadar kentlerin özgür iradesine bırakılmışsa da, imparatorlara, imparator ve Roma Tanrıçası (Dea Roma) kültüne gösterilen saygı olmaksızın güçlü kalamazdı. Küçükasya Dionysos tapınımı da, tamamıyla imparatorlar ve Roma İmparatorluğu ile kurulan güçlü bağlar sayesinde gelişebilmiştir. Bununla paralel olarak da Roma İmparatorluğu, halk için önemli olan pagan bir kültü destekleyerek, hem halkın sempatisini kazanmakta, hem de böylece onların Roma’ya olan bağlılığını sürdürmek amacını gütmekteydi. General Marcus Antonius’un Ephesos’a gelişinde “Yeni Dionysos” olarak karşılanmasıyla başlayan Romalı devlet adamlarını tanrılaştırma geleneği, Roma İmparatorluk Çağı’nda da sürmüş; bu dönemde özellikle Anazarbos, Ankyra, Ephesos, Teōs, Aphrodisias ve Sardeis’teki dernekler, İmparator Hadrianus, Commodus ve Caracalla’yı bu sıfatla nitelendirmişler, böylece onları Dionysos ile bir tutarak tanrılaştırmışlardır. İmparatorluk veya Dea Roma kültü ile ortak tapınımı da görülen Dionysos’un Zeus ve Dēmētēr gibi pagan tanrı-tanrıçalarla da ortak tapınımı söz konusudur. Diğer pagan dinler gibi Dionysos kültünün yıkımı da, öğretilerinin birbirine tamamen ters düştüğü Hıristiyanlık dininin güçlenmesiyle ve nihayetinde M.S. 391’de imparatorluğun resmî dini olmasıyla gerçekleşmiştir. Ancak Dionysos kültünün birçok unsuru, Küçükasya topraklarında, gerek Hıristiyanlık unsurlarında gerekse halk kültür ve geleneklerinde yaşamaya devam etmiştir. Bugün de bu etkisini göstermeye devam etmektedir."

On the basis of archaeological, numismatic, and (mainly) epigraphic attestations, B.Öztürk,Roma imparatorluk çağı Küçükasaysı’nda Dionysos kültü (Istanbul 2010), studies the cult ofΔιόνυσος in Roman Asia Minor. After general remarks about the god, he presents a geographically arranged catalogue of the relevant inscriptions with brief comments (ph. of some texts). On 196-209, Ö. provides a register with explanations of the most important terms found in the inscriptions, and on 210/211 a list of epithets.

Öz II. Meşrutiyet, Türkiye'de idarenin tarihsel gelişimi bağlamında önemli ilklere ev sahipliği yapmıştır. Anarşinin sınırlarını zorlayan bir özgürlük ortamında filizlenen parlamenter çoğulculuk bu ilklerin başında gelmektedir. Farklı dini ve etnik kökene sahip insanlar mebus olmaya hak kazanarak Osmanlı Meclisi'nde bir araya gelmişler ve devlet idaresinde söz sahibi olmuşlardır. Osmanlı Devleti'nin kuruluşundan itibaren Anadolu'da varlıklarını sürdüren Museviler de mecliste temsil edilmiştir. Osmanlı Devleti'nin son döneminde İzmir ve Selanik milletvekilliği yapan Nesim Masliyah, hem İttihat ve Terakki'nin hem de Musevi cemaatinin önde gelen şahsiyetlerinden biridir. Asıl mesleği avukatlık olan Masliyah, basın faaliyetlerinde bulunmuş ve çeşitli gazetelerde yazılar yazmıştır. Cumhuriyet döneminde avukatlık mesleğini sürdürmüş; aldığı önemli davalarla adından söz ettirmiştir. Bu makalede, Nesim Masliyah'ın biyografisine, siyasal düşünce dünyasına ve meclisteki faaliyetlerine yer verilmeye çalışılmıştır. Abstract A Jewish Member in the Ottoman Chamber of Deputy: Nesim Masliyah Second Constitutional Era hosted significant breakthroughs due to the historical development of administration in Turkey. Parliament pluralism, forcing the boundaries of anarchy, came up in an era of freedom is at the top of this policy. People of different ethnic backgrounds and religion had the right to become a member of the Ottoman Chamber of Deputy and were closely involved with decisions in the state administration. Since the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, the Jews, sustaining their presence in Anatolia, were also represented in the Chamber of Deputy. In the last period of the Ottoman Empire, Nesim who was the Member of Parliament representing İzmir and Selonica is one of the leading characters both in The Union and Progress and the Jews Community. His main profession solicitorship, Nesim organised activities in the press and wrote articles in various newspapers. During the Republican period he sustained his profession as a lawyer and made a name for himself in the cases he took. In this paper, the biography of Nesim Masliyah, his point of view in politics and his activities in the parliament were evaluated.

The presently accepted ceramic chronology places the earliest episodes of Greek colonisation in Libya some three to four decades earlier than the traditional historical dates. A similar offset between the archaeological and historical chronologies can be seen at Naukratis and other Archaic Greek sites. A review of ‘fixed points’ for Archaic dating shows that the balance of evidence now strongly favours a reduction of late seventh to early sixth century BC Greek ceramic chronology by three to four decades. Such a reduction would bring harmony between the archaeological and historical pictures for the founding of the Cyrenaican colonies, restoring confidence in the account given by Herodotus.

An in-depth archaeological report featuring graffiti found during a recent excavation at the Ancient Greek city of Smyrna.

The graffiti published in this richly-illustrated volume were discovered during an excavation of the Roman basilica in the Ancient Greek city of Smyrna, known today as Izmir, which is situated on the Aegean coast of modern Turkey.

The project, which began in 2003, has unearthed a multitude of graffiti and drawings encompassing a wide range of subjects and interests, including local politics, nautical vessels, sex, and wordplay. Each graffito artifact holds the potential for vast historical and cultural data, rescued in this volume from the passage of time and razing ambitions of urban development. Given the city’s history, the potential wealth of knowledge to be gleamed from these discoveries is substantial: Smyrna has an uninterrupted history of settlement since the Neolithic–Copper ages, and remains today a major city and Mediterranean seaport at the crossroads of key trade routes.

The present volume provides comprehensive editions of the texts, descriptions of the drawings, and an extensive introduction to the subjects of the graffiti, how they were produced, and who was responsible for them. A complete set of color photographs is included.

Abstract
This study deals with a painter and lithographer Bogos Tatikian (1820 - ?) of Smyrna who was an Ottoman Armenian and was considerably active in Smyrna in 19th century. In addition, using some new documents this study aims to evaluate the Tatikian Printing House served for a long time in Smyrna and Tatikian’s contributions to the cultural and artistic environment of the city. In the commercial annuals published on various dates in Izmir during the 19th century and the early 20th century, the name of the Tatikian Printing House is commonly observed.  The latest publications of the Tatikian Printing House are dated from 1922 and after then its name is unable to find in documents and trade annuals. The lithographer and painter Bogos Tatikian began to paint in 1840s. The street scenes reflected the local characteristics in order to attract the attention of foreign tourists were mostly painted by the artist. These large size images commonly contained a single figure and represented the street vendors and the costumes of the different nations of the city. In addition, Tatikian prepared and printed to sell the colored and gilded portraits of the Ottoman Sultans. His engraving albums are appeared in various museums and private collections in domestic and abroad. One of these albums is held at Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Ataturk Library. This album was commissioned by the Sultan Abdulhamid II. for the National Library of United States of America. It contains 29 colored engravings depicted the vendors and the peoples from different religions and nationalities like Armenians, Turks, Jews, Albanians in Smyrna. Although we were unable to reach all details of his life, the works left by him reveals that he was an eager and lively artist.

Bu çalışma 19. yüzyılda İzmir’de etkin bir ressam ve litografi (taşbaskı) ustası olan Ermeni asıllı Osmanlı vatandaşı Boğos Tatikyan’ı (1820-?) ele almakta, eserlerini, dönemin kültür ve sanat ortamına yaptığı katkıları ve İzmir’de uzun zaman hizmet veren Tatikyan Matbaası’nı bazı yeni belge ve kaynaklardan yararlanarak değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. 19. yüzyıl boyunca ve 20. yüzyıl başlarında İzmir’de çeşitli tarihlerde basılan ticaret rehberlerinde Tatikyan Matbaası’nın adına rastlanmakta, her dilde ayrım yapmaksızın basım yaptığı bilinmektedir. Matbaanın en geç tarihli yayınları 1922’ye tarihlenmekte, bu tarihten sonra adına pek rastlanmamaktadır. Boğos Tatikyan’ın 1840’larda resim yapmaya başladığı düşünülmektedir. Sanatçı, özellikle yabancı turistlere hitap edebilmek amacıyla İzmir’in yerel özelliklerini yansıtan sokak sahneleri resmetmiştir. Bunlar, sokak satıcıları, İzmir’deki farklı milletlerin kıyafetleri gibi konuları ele alan çoğu zaman tek figürlü büyük boy taşbaskı resimlerdir. Bunların dışında Tatikyan, Osmanlı Sultanları’nın portrelerini de renkli ve yaldızlı olarak hazırlayıp basmış ve satışa sunmuştur. Tatikyan’ın gravür albümleri yurt içi ve yurt dışında çeşitli müze ve özel koleksiyonlarda yer almaktadır. Bu albümlerden biri de İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyesi Atatürk Kitaplığı’nda korunmaktadır. 1893 tarihli bu albüm, II. Abdülhamid Dönemi’nde Birleşik Devletler Ulusal Kütüphanesi için hazırlatılmıştır. 29 renkli gravürden oluşan albümde İzmir’in sokak satıcıları ile Ermeni, Türk, Arnavut, Yahudi gibi farklı milletlerin giyim kuşamları betimlenmiştir. Yaşamına ilişkin tüm ayrıntılara ulaşmak mümkün olmasa da bıraktığı eserler İzmirli sanatçı Boğos Tatikyan’ın tanınmaya ve tanıtılmaya değer renkli bir sanatçı olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.

Smyrna was a city of immigrants from different regions, among them Cappadocia and Pisidia, which was one of the reasons that led to its large population growth. This study aims at exploring the population, economic, social and cultural composition of Smyrna and the other two regions, at a better understanding of the migratory phenomenon and finally at examining the applicability of the terms "cosmopolitanism" and "metropolis" to the study of Smyrna.

Ankara Üniversitesi Protohistorya ve Önasya Arkeolojisi Yüksek Lisans öğrencisi olarak, seminerlerimi paylaşmaktaki amacım; öğrenci arkadaşlarıma araştırdıkları konular hakkında ufakta olsa izlenebilecek yol ve literatür konusunda yardımcı olmasıdır.  Paylaştıklarım sadece eğitimim boyunca hazırladığım bazı seminerlerdir. Herhangi bir yerde yayınlanmış araştırmalar değildir.

“Yıldız Sarayı Fotoğraf Albümleri” içerisinde yer alan İzmir ve çevresine ait fotoğraflardan oluşan bir albüm/kitap projesini hayata geçirmeyi uzun zamandır düşünüyorduk. Bizi bu sürece yönelten temel neden, söz konusu koleksiyondan faydalanılarak İstanbul, Bursa, Edirne, Manisa gibi
kentlere ait albüm/kitapların yayımlanmış olmasına rağmen şimdiye kadar İzmir ile ilgili benzer bir çalışmanın yapılmamış olmasıydı. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, İzmir'e ilişkin fotoğrafları; arşiv belgeleri, dönemin basın haberleri ve diğer kaynakların ışığında yorumlayarak görüntüler üzerinden bir kent tarihi okuması yapmaktır. Bu nedenle, fotoğrafların altındaki bilgilendirme yazılarından ve fotoğraflardaki çeşitli ayrıntılardan yola çıkarak detaylı bir arşiv araştırması yapılmıştır.

Bu ülke ve bu ülkenin
insanları büyük bir macera yaşadı. 1850-1950 yılları arasındaki yüz
yıl içinde yaşanan macera, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti sınırlarını aşan, Balkanlar ve
Ortadoğu’yu da kapsayarak dönüştüren bir maceraydı. Yaşanan maceranın
temel özelliği, temel aksı, temel değişim doğrultusu; çok dinli, çok uluslu ve
tarıma dayalı bir imparatorluk yapısından ulus devletlere geçiş sürecidir. Bu
süreç, sancılı, zahmetli, acılarla dolu, bireylerin hayatlarında travmatik izler
bırakan olaylarla dolu bir süreçti.

Abidelerin hafıza mekânları (lieux de mémoire) olarak çoklu ve değişken anlamlarıyla ulusal ideolojiyi tahkim etme, kolektif hafızayı şekillendirme, ihtilaflı hafızaları harekete geçirme kabiliyetleri ve bununla çelişkili gibi görünmekle beraber unutulma potansiyelleri üzerine geniş bir literatür mevcuttur. Bu çalışmada, modern Yunanistan tarihinin oldukça çalkantılı bir epizodu olan İki Savaş Arası Dönem’de inşa edilmek istenen bir abidenin anlatısı üzerinden, hafıza rejimleri ve bu rejimlerde “Küçük Asya Felaketi” ve “muhacir meselesinin” tuttuğu yer takip ediliyor. Bu amaçla, İzmir Metropoliti Hrisostomos’un Yunan milliyetçiliğinin birbirleriyle çelişki içinde görünen dinî ve seküler kanallarını 1922’deki “şehadeti” ile bünyesinde buluşturan çok boyutlu hatırası, bu hatıranın cisimleşmiş hali olarak ortaya çıkan Atina’daki abide ve bu abidenin 1920’lerden günümüze uzanan “macerasına” odaklanılmaktadır.


There is a well-established literature on monuments as sites of memory (lieux de mémoire), their ability to strengthen national ideology, to shape collective memory as well as to mobilize conflicting memories; and although it seems contradictory, their potential to get consigned to oblivion through their multiple and pliable meanings. In this study, via the narrative of a monument erected in the interwar era, particularly turbulent years in modern Greek history, the memory regimes and the role of the “Asia Minor Catastrophe” and the “refugee issue” in those regimes are investigated. For this purpose, this article focuses on the multifaceted memory of Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Smyrna, who unifies the purportedly incompatible religious and secular strands of Greek nationalism through his “martyrdom” in 1922, his monument in Athens as the embodiment of this memory and its “adventures” from the 1920s to contemporary times.

The 19th century is an important historical period in the World in which political, economic, social and technological developments are experienced. In particular, the development of transport and communication technologies has brought societies closer. However, new ideas of thought that emerged after the French Revolution had affected societies and shaken the empires. In this period, though the societies and cultures became closer to each other, the boundaries between the countries became more apparent as a requirement of states' central authority empowerment policies. Passports and travel permits were being used more systematically to prevent people from traveling or migrating without a reason.
Western Anatolia, which is home to many important centers for Christians, is a very popular area for foreigners, both religiously, culturally and commercially. The notes that the travelers took, at that time, provide us with many important clues about the region where the people living there. In this context, the observations and thoughts written by the Western travelers about the Armenians, which are a long history of more than five hundred years in Western Anatolia, are very important both for Armenian and Western Anatolian histories.
For centuries, Armenians have lived faithful to their state under Turkish domination. A number of groups with an innumerable contribution to the Ottoman society have been made foreign to their congregations and then to their states, with the provocations of European imperialist powers during the distribution of the empire.
In this study, the Armenians in 19th century was examined through the eyes of travelers under the headings of population, culture, education and economics.

Relate the setting and church history of each city to the settings of the universal conflict between good and evil;
Relate Jesus’ titles in the letters to His role in the battles and in victory;
Relate Jesus’ commendations in the letters to the ultimate triumph of the saints under their leader, Jesus;
Relate Jesus’ complaints to the forces of evil in the visions; and,
Relate Jesus’ counsel and promises to the behavior of the forces of good and their ultimate triumph over evil.

Το νεοσύστατο ελληνικό κράτος εστίασε κατ' αρχήν το ενδιαφέρον του στην αναστήλωση και την προστασία των αρχαίων μνημείων (Γκράτζιου, 2006: 37). Ταυτόχρονα τα βυζαντινά μνημεία θεωρήθηκαν στοιχεία μίας περιόδου παρακμής του ελληνικού πολιτισμού. Οι απόψεις των Ζαμπέλιου και Παπαρρηγόπουλου που υποστήριζαν την ενσωμάτωση του Βυζαντίου στην εθνική ιστορία (Καραμανωλάκης και Στάθης, 2000: 251-252· Κιουσοπούλου, 2006: 28-33),.σταδιακά επηρέασαν και τις πολιτικές του ελληνικού κράτους απέναντι στα βυζαντινά μνημεία (Χλέπα, 2012: 64-66). Ανάμεσα στους πρώτους που εργάστηκαν σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση ήταν ο Γεώργιος Λαμπάκης, ο οποίος αφού ολοκλήρωσε τη διδακτορική του διατριβή στη Γερμανία με θέμα τις χριστιανικές αρχαιότητες της Αττικής, επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα και ανέλαβε προσωρινά έφορος βυζαντινών αρχαιοτήτων (Δελατόλας, 2006: 54-55). Πρώτο μέλημα του Λαμπάκη ήταν η μελέτη και η προστασία των πιο σημαντικών βυζαντινών μνημείων του ελληνικού κράτους, όπως της μονής του Οσίου Λουκά  και της μονής Δαφνίου . Το 1884 ίδρυσε μαζί με άλλους τη Χριστιανική Αρχαιολογική Εταιρεία με κύριο στόχο τη δημιουργία ενός χριστιανικού μουσείου. Πολύ σύντομα ανέλαβε ιδιαίτερος γραμματέας της βασίλισσας Όλγας. Αυτή η θέση του έδωσε τη δυνατότητα να ταξιδεύει συχνά εντός των ορίων της ελληνικής επικράτειας αλλά και σε περιοχές που βρίσκονταν στα όρια της οθωμανικής αυτοκρατορίας (Mourelatos, 2011: 289).
