Mishnah

In this book the author has discovered a new way of dealing with the problematic relationship between the Mishnah and the Tosefta. Her approach comprises a computer-assisted analysis of the text on the basis of the most important manuscripts, and a computer program was made for the compilation of different synopses. The program can take the Mishnah as a running text to which the Tosefta material is synoptically arranged, but it can als reverse the procedure. This enables an unbiased comparison of the two texts.
In the second part of the book, the methodology is applied to the tractates Berakhot and Shebiit. The analysis shows that the texts are interwoven so closely that they can almost be considered a single literary work.

Die Verben ohne Punktierung beziehen sich grundsätzlich auf den TANACH-Wortschatz, während die Verben mit Punktierung den neuhebräischen Gebrauch darstellen.
Ich weise darauf hin, dass ich kein Philologe, sondern Exeget (Neutestamentler) bin. Das ist beim Gebrauch dieser Unterlagen zu beachten. Gleichwohl werden Experten und andere durch diese Un-terlagen zu sehr spannenden philologischen Erkenntnissen gelangen.

Maḥloqet l’šem šamayim is the topic of m’Abot 5:17. Medieval interpreters understood maḥloqet as a ‘dispute’. Modern scholars, following Biblical Hebrew, have proposed ‘group’ as the original definition, with support from one of the oldest commentaries to m’Abot. Others opposed this interpretation as irreconcilable with the Mishnah’s examples and proposed alternate intermediate interpretations. A diachronic analysis of manuscript textual witnesses and of parallels in m’Abot 4:11 and ‘Abot R. Nat. suggests that ‘group’ was the definition in an abbreviated early Mishnah, which split following the linguistic development of the term maḥloqet. That kernel was supplemented with examples in order to clarify the new meaning, ‘dispute’, as was the parallel to m’Abot 4:11 in ‘Abot R. Nat B 46, which preserves the older meaning by substituting the term k’nesiya. An appendix describes the colourful history of an original later interpretation deliberately misattributed to R. Jonah of Girona by the printer.

These study questions on the MIshnah of Seder Moed are designed to accompany a "bekiut" study ("speed" learning focusing on covering material quickly) of Mishnah. They focus on issues of arrangement and structure, adding depth and focus to "extensive" study and aiding in remembering the material

The book of Mishna law was written a few centuries after the birth of Christ, and was commented on by many rabbis over the generations.

There are literally volumes of additional comments by thousands of rabbis, primarily Eastern Europeans.

The first two books are about agricultural and religious holidays, and are therefore somewhat less relevant than some of the social and municiple laws of the other 4 books.

Ein Klassiker der jüdischen Literatur: Die Sprüche der Väter (hebräisch: Pirke Avot), eine spätantike Sammlung jüdischer Weisheitssprüche, gehören zu den wichtigsten frühen Dokumenten des rabbinischen Judentums und sind bis heute der bekannteste und meistgelesene Abschnitt des Talmuds, vielfach rezipiert bis hin zu Primo Levi und Bob Dylan. Die Ausgabe bietet erstmals eine genaue und vollständige moderne Übersetzung aus dem Hebräischen sowie einen sorgfältigen Kommentar zu jedem Spruch. עבודה זו עוסקת בתופעה ספרותית ייחודית בתלמוד הבבלי: דיאלוגים קבועים (תבניות) שיש בהם עימות חזיתי בין אמוראים בדור השלישי והרביעי של אמוראי בבל. ייחודה של תופעה זו טמון בכך שהתבניות חוזרות מספר פעמים בסוגיות שונות, ומכילות מרכיבים קבועים כגון ביטויי לשון, שמות החכמים, ולעתים גם תכנים וטיעונים דומים. מחוות העימות החריפות מטעינות את התבניות במתח כוחני, והתגובה של המותקפים מעצימה את הקונפליקט. 
החכמים המשתתפים בדיאלוגים הם אמוראים בני הדור השלישי והרביעי בבבל; רב חסדא, רבא, רב נחמן בר יצחק ורב נחמן בר רב חסדא. בין חכמים אלו מתקיימים קשרים משפחתיים, חברתיים, ולימודיים קרובים, אך יחד עמם מתגלים וויכוחים ופערים עמוקים. תהליך העברת שמועות ומסורות מא"י לבבל החל לצבור תאוצה בזמנם ובמקומם של חכמים אלו, ובעקבות תהליך זה התנהלו ביניהם מאבקי סמכות עיקשים.
שתי תבניות נבחנו בעבודה. בתבנית הראשונה, 'האי בורכא', תוקף רבא דרשה שנאמרת מפי רב נחמן בר רב חסדא במילים 'האי בורכא', בטענה שהדרשה נובעת משיבוש במסירת השמועות. רב נחמן בר יצחק נחלץ להגנתו של רב נחמן בר רב חסדא, בטענה שהוא עצמו מסר את השמועה, והוא מוסיף ומציין את מקור השמועה. בקריאה שטחית, איננו יודעים מדוע רבא תוקף את הדרשה, וכן איננו יודעים מה פשר הגיבוי שמעניק רב נחמן בר יצחק לרב נחמן בר רב חסדא. ואולם, עיון מדוקדק בכלל הסוגיות שבהן מופיע הדיאלוג, מצביע על שני מישורים שבהם מתנהל העימות:
א. פרשנות המשנה: בסוגיות אלו יש פער מהותי בין מה שנאמר במשנה למה שנאמר בתוספתא ובברייתות אחרות. רבא תומך בהלכה שבמשנה בניגוד לאחרים.
ב. וויכוח על אמינות המסירה: רבא טוען שההלכה שדורש רב נחמן בר רב חסדא נובעת משיבוש ועיוות בהעברת המסורת, ורב נחמן בר יצחק מעניק גיבוי פורמאלי למסורת. 
הסוגיות שבהן מופיע הדיאלוג 'האי בורכא', מכילות סוגיות מעובדות ומעוצבות שרב נחמן בר יצחק אחראי להן. היותו של רב נחמן בר יצחק מראשוני העורכים של התלמוד הבבלי, ידועה ממקורות רבים בתלמוד, וחוקרים כמו אפשטיין וא"ש רוזנטל עסקו בכך. הביקורת של רבא שולבה בסוגיות אלו בנקודת הקצה, המנוגדת ביותר למשנת רבי. הביקורת של רבא הפכה לחלק אינטגרלי מהסוגיה המקורית, ובהיקרות אחת של התבנית מצאנו את עקבותיה של עריכה קדומה, המשמרת את הוויכוח החי בין הסוגיה הבבלית לבין מבקריה.
התבנית השנייה, 'מאן ציית לך', מעמתת בין רב חסדא לשמועות שהגיעו מארץ ישראל, ונאמרו בפניו בשם רבי יוחנן ע"י אמורא בבלי. רב חסדא תוקף את תלמידו במילים 'מאן ציית לך ולרבי יוחנן רבך? וכי קדושה שבהן להיכן הלכה?', ובכך מתנער מסמכותו של רבי יוחנן ומבסס את סמכותו שלו בבית המדרש הבבלי. התבנית מופיעה בארבע סוגיות שונות, והדיאלוג הגרעיני בין רב חסדא לתלמיד של רבי יוחנן התפתח בסוגיות אלו לכדי משא ומתן מסועף בעל מבנה מורכב.
על סמך הניתוח של סוגיות 'מאן ציית לך' טענתי שהשלב הראשוני של התבנית התפתח סביב משניות ושמועות ארצישראליות שסודרו על גבי המשניות הנידונות. בשלב זה נקבעה באופן מוצהר ההתנגדות של רב חסדא לתלמודה של טבריה, ולאור הצהרה זו השתלשלו השלבים הבאים של הסוגיה, הכוללים מאפייני חשיבה ופרשנות מובהקים של אמוראי בבל. השלב שבו הסוגיה השתלבה במסגרת של תלמוד למסכת מסוימת, משתנה מסוגיה לסוגיה.
בשתי תבניות הדיאלוג שניתחנו, נמצאה התאמה מאלפת בין הצורה החיצונית והקבועה של הדיאלוג, לבין מערכת היחסים שהתקיימה בין החכמים הנזכרים בו. התבנית 'האי בורכא' משקפת מאבק שניטש בין אמוראי בבל בדור הרביעי, בשאלת סמכותה של משנת רבי במקרים של התנגשות עם מסורות בבליות קדומות. התבנית 'מאן ציית לך' מעמתת בין רבי יוחנן, מייצג תורת ארץ ישראל, לבין רב חסדא, מייצג תורת בבל.



This work deal with a unique literary phenomenon in the Babylonian Talmud: Fixed (form) dialogues containing direct confrontations between third and fourth generation Amoraim. These are unique in that their form repeats a number of times in a variety of sugyot, and contain fixed components such as language, the Sages’ names, and sometimes similar content and arguments. The sharp gestures of conflict infuse the forms with an aggressive tension, and the respondents’ reply amplifies the conflict.
The Sages who participated in the dialogues are third and fourth generation Babylonian Amoraim: Rav Hisda, Rava, Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak and Rav Nahman Bar Rav Hisda. These Sages have common family, social and intellectual ties, but alongside these are debates and profound differences. The process of passing oral traditions from the Land of Israel to Babylon started to pick up speed in this period, and as a result these sages conducted fierce struggles for authority.
Two forms were examined in this work. In the first, ‘Hai Burcha’, Rava attacks a learning by Rav Nahman Bar Rav Hisda with the words ‘Hai Burcha’, arguing that the learning is based on a distorted tradition. Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak came to the defense of Rav Nahman Bar Rav Hisda, arguing that he passed on the tradition and also noting the tradition’s source. A simple reading of this text does not reveal why Rava attacked the sermon or the significance of Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak’s defense of Rav Nahman Bar Rav Hisda. However, a careful examination of the sugyas in which this dialogue form appears revealsthe two levels on which the debate is conducted:
I. The Interpretation of the Mishnah: In these sugyot, there is a significant discrepancy between what the Mishnah says and what the Tosefta and other Braytot say. Rava supports the Mishnah against other sources.
II. Debating the Reliability of the Transmission of Tradition: Rava argues that the halacha Rav Nahman Bar Rav Hisda derives in his learning is based on a distortion in the transmission of tradition, while Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak vouches for the validity of this transmission.
The sugyot in which the ‘Hai Burcha’ dialogue form appears include reworked and designed sugyot for which Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak is responsible. Rav Nahman Bar Yitzhak’s role as one of the first editors of the Babylonian Talmud, is known from many sources in the Talmud, and scholars such as Epstein and A.S. Rosenthal have discussed it. Rava’s critique was integrated into these sugyot at the end point, as the furthest counterpoint to Rebi Yehuda Hanasi’s Mishnah. Rava’s criticism became an integral part of the original sugya, and in one instance of the dialogue form we found the traces of early editing, which preserves the live debate between the Babylonian sugya and its critics.
The second dialogue form, “Man Tzayit Lach”, pits Rav Hisda against traditions from the Land of Israel, said to him by a Baylonian Amora in the name of Rabi Yohanan. Rav Hisda attacks his student with the words ‘Who obeys you and Rebi Yohanan you master? Does the holiness in them [lead to] halacha, thus disavowing Rebi Yohanan’s authority and basing his own on the Babylonian Talmud. The dialogue form appears in four different sugyas, and the core dialogue between Rav Hisda and Rebi Yohanan’s student developed there into a complex and wide-ranging discussion.
Based on an analysis of “Man Tzayit Lei” sugyas, I argue that the initial stage of the dialogue form developed revolved around Mishnayot and traditions from the Land of Israel arranged based on these Mishnayot. At this stage, Rav Hisda’s open opposition to the Talmud in Tiberias was established, and the following stages of the sugya developed in light of this declaration, including patterns of thought and interpretation characteristic of Babylonian Amoraim. The stage at which the sugya was integrated in the discussion of any given Tractate differs from sugya to sugya.
In the two dialogue forms we analyzed, there was an illustrative match between the external and fixed form of the dialogue, and the aforementioned relationship between the Sages involved in the disputes. The ‘Hai Burcha’ form reflects a struggle between third and fourth generation Amoraim regarding the authority of the Mishna over ancient Babylonian traditions. The ‘Man Tzayit Lei’ form pits Rebi Yohanan, representative of the teachings of the Land of Israel, against Rav Hisda, representative of Babylonian teachings.

The treatise Nedarim is published in the Jerusalem Mishnah Series which aims to provide its readers with a reliable text and an accurate translation. As the first complete edition of the Mischnah it passes on the two different versions of the Mishnah, the Babylonian and the Palestinian, in their main representatives.

מאז השלים הרמב"ם את כתיבת פירושו למשנה, בהיותו בן 30, הוא לא פסק להגיהו ולתקנו. תיקוניו מופיעים באוטוגרף הפירוש, שהשתמר כמעט כולו. במאמר נסקר מצב המחקר אודות מהדורות הרמב"ם בפירוש המשנה, ונחקרות הסיבות לחזרות, לצד סקירה רחבה של תיקונים משתי תקופות: צעירותו, מיד בהשלמת כתיבת החיבור; וזקנתו, כשכתב ידו כבר החל לרעוד. כך נפרסת מפה של מניעים שונים לתיקונים, לצד סקירת התרגומים המעודכנים ברבדים שונים שלהם.

On the connection between "‘‘Cities Surrounded by a Wall from the Time of Joshua Son of Nun" of reading the Esther scroll in Purim (Mishnah Megilah 1:1)  and The Tannaitic List of 'Walled Cities' in Mishnah Arachin 9:6: Histroy, Archaeology and possible Palestinian Rabbinic shaping of liturgical reading of Diaspora text in the Synagogue.

This volume brings together nineteen studies by foremost experts in the period of Herod and Augustus, and highlights recent progress in elucidating the phenomenon of Herod the Great in the context of the Roman imperial order inaugurated by Augustus. They illuminate Herod’s pre-eminent role in the Augustan client network and his remarkable energies, expressed in an extensive building programme which has left substantial remains. The literary records of Herod’s life and times, primarily by Josephus, are critically examined here in relation to the documentary and archaeological evidence.

This article proposes to rethink the genealogy and origin of the rabbinical terms Oral Torah and Written Torah. The terms appear for the first time in Tannaitic literature, yet scholars have attempted to ascribe to them an earlier date and to present them as a Second Temple, specifically Pharisaic, distinction. This article problematizes the existing genealogies and considers neglected evidence found in Paul's Letter to the Romans that advances our understanding of the Oral Torah/Written Torah distinction in the first century CE. According to my rereading of Rom 10:5-13 and 3:19-31, Paul has a notion of double-nomos within scripture, and his twofold torah is presented as oral and written. Apart from rabbinic literature, it is only in Paul that we find the use of an Oral Torah/Written Torah distinction. This evidence affects both how the history of the rabbinic terms is understood and how Paul is configured in his Jewish matrix.

Alloys that went under the name of Corinthian Bronze were highly prized in the Roman Empire at the beginning of the Christian era, when Corinthian Bronze was used to embellish the great gate of Herod's Temple in Jerusalem. From the ancient texts it emerges that Corinthian Bronze was the name given to a family of copper alloys with gold and silver which were depletion gilded to give them a golden or silver lustre. An important centre of production appears to have been Egypt where, by tradition, alchemy had its origins. From an analysis of the earliest alchemical texts, it is suggested that the concept of transmutation of base metals into gold arose from the depletion gilding process.

Although miqwa’ot and chalkstone vessels have been found throughout Israel, the unparalleled number of such finds at Jerusalem has conventionally been explained in terms of the special demands of the Temple cult and of the city’s priestly residents. In light of a growing number of archaeological discoveries from the past number of years, however, the conception that Jerusalem and its Temple served as focal points of ritual purity observance deserves to be significantly reevaluated. The new data indicate that regular, widespread use of ritual baths and chalkstone vessels was not at all unique to Jerusalem or the priesthood, but rather was commonplace to a comparable degree in Jewish society throughout early Roman Judea. Jews everywhere throughout the country strove on a regular basis to maintain the purity of their bodies, clothing, utensils, food, and drink, and there is no reason to suppose that in doing so they somehow had the Temple in mind. Most Jews living at this time would probably have understood the pentateuchal purity regulations as prescribing that ritual purity be maintained on a regular basis in ordinary, everyday life – without specific regard to the Temple or its cult. This new understanding encourages us to reinterpret the archaeological finds from Jerusalem as reflecting an important facet of prevailing common culture rather than as stemming from the unique sanctity of Jerusalem, the Temple, or its priests.

The relationship between the ancient Jewish Temple and the existing Haram al-Sharif, the enclosure housing the Dome of the Rock and Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem is explored and identified using topographic and
documentary evidence, also taking into account relevant material remains.

Ancient tefillin remains, discovered together with the Dead Sea Scrolls in the middle of the 20th century, provided the first opportunity to examine evidence relating to the origins and early development of the tefillin ritual. Unfortunately, this vital corpus of tefillin finds has never merited comprehensive scientific analysis, and many of them remain unpublished, including several tefillin slips which have never even been unfolded and deciphered. Official publications of the tefillin texts which have been opened and deciphered rely on old readings of the minuscule texts carried out before the introduction of high-resolution multispectral imaging. The paleographic character of the scripts on most of the published tefillin slips has never been comprehensively studied, and as a result, the chronology of the finds remains uncertain. Finally, no full scientific report has ever been published on the majority of the tefillin casings. In short, the corpus of Judean Desert tefillin remains is a treasure-trove of vital information which remains largely untapped. 

The present essay presents a preliminary report on a new, in-progress research project whose goal is the comprehensive scientific analysis and publication of all the ancient tefillin remains found in the Judean Desert. The project uses state-of-the-art technologies to analyze both the inscribed tefillin slips and the casings made to house them, as well as the straps which attached these casings to the body of the tefillin practitioner. The seven specific objectives are to a) physically locate the remains; b) open the folded tefillin slips and thereby obtain new tefillin texts; c) generate new readings of previously published tefillin slips using new imaging technologies; d) prepare graphic reconstructions of the original slips; e) determine the dating of all tefillin manuscripts through paleographic analysis; f) document and characterize the tefillin casings and straps in terms of morphology; g) analyze the skins and stitching material in terms of animal origin and manufacturing processes.

This article discusses various rabbinic approaches to the story of Elisha and Gehazi (recorded in the Book of Kings), in which the former sends the latter with his staff to resurrect the Shunammite woman's dead child. Gehazi proves unsuccessful in that endeavor and Elisha himself ultimates revives the dead child.

בין משנה למדרש מציג באור חדש את המהפכה המשפטית שחלה ביהדות בשלהי העת העתיקה.
המשנה, שנחתמה בראשית המאה השלישית לספירה על ידי רבי יהודה הנשיא, הייתה ראשיתה של מהפכה פרשנית ונורמטיבית חסרת תקדים. לראשונה בתולדות המסורת היהודית, שהעבירה את חוקיה מדור לדור, נוצרה מערכת חוקים מקיפה העומדת לעצמה, במנותק מן המקרא. ספרי החומש זכו באותה עת גם לפרשנות נועזת ומתוחכמת, בספרות המדרש, שהוציאה את התורה מפשוטה והתאימה את מסריה למציאות זמנם של החכמים.
כיצד קרה שהחכמים יצרו מערכת חוקים חדשה ושונה מזו שהתקיימה מאות שנים? האם המדרש אכן נולד למטרות פרשנות או אולי מונחות בבסיסו מוטיבציות אחרות? המחבר בוחן לעומק שאלות יסוד אלה ומציע להן תשובות מפתיעות.

The present paper shows “the breaking of bread” (cf. 1Cor 11:24) as the central liturgical sign of the Eucharist, typologically foretold by the analogous sign of the First Covenant: the breaking of the Paschal Afikoman in the yearly Passover. The paper shows that both signs cause the participants of the liturgy to become participants of the act of making the covenant which was performed by the passage of the Abyss: the Abyss-Death in the Eucharist, the Abyss of waters of the Red Sea in the Passover.
To understand both signs in their liturgical context was necessary to compare the whole rite of the Passover and the whole rite of the Eucharist. The paper shows consequently that their four-element structures one built on the same four-element ancient (XVI-XII century before Christ) structure of the ceremony of the covenant renovation. The author applied here the result of the analyses of the Passover rite, published as the doctoral thesis in 2008: this rite is hidden in Ex 1-18 as his literary structure. The rite of the Eucharist, in turn, he showed in light of St. Paul’s teaching (especially the First Letter to the Corinthians) and of Acts 2:42, where – according to Biblicists – this rite is hidden.
One shown in detail the analogy between respective parts of the rite of the Passover and of the Eucharist, and also the identity of liturgical form of the first, third and fourth their parts, respectively: 1. teaching, 3. partaking of the one unleavened bread (i.e. Afikoman / the Body of Christ) and of the one cup (i.e. wine / Blood of Christ), 4. worship prayers.
Because the second part (fellowship), when the liturgical community receives the covenant law from God, is accomplished in different form in these two rites, the way of transformation of the form of the second part of Passover (the lamb consumption) into the form of the second part of the Eucharist (prayers of love for brothers) is shown also.
As the clamp “preparation – fulfillment” embraces four-stage exit from Egypt, so the clamp “before-seder” – “after-seder” does it for Passover and also for the Eucharist. Namely, at the beginning there is a time when the liturgy participants prepare themselves to enter into the solemnity of the liturgy; there is a time of prayer at the end when the liturgical community receives spiritual gifts of God.
