九州各地の方言は動詞活用の組織に特徴があり,二段活用(特に下二段)が残存して古い特徴を保つ一方,一段動詞がラ行五段化するという新しい変化の方向を併せ持つ。このふたつの特徴は方向性が逆であるため,別個の説明が与えられることが多かった。本稿では,大分方言に見られる動詞終止形の撥音化現象を手掛かりに,それらの特徴はいずれも「同音衝突の回避」が関係するという仮説を提出する。
