Israel Zangwill

L’articolo indaga il rapporto editoriale che si instaurò tra Ada Negri e l’editore e poligrafo Giuseppe Ugo Nalato, in arte Gian Dàuli, negli anni Venti del Novecento, attraverso la discussione delle cinque superstiti lettere inedite della poetessa conservate presso la Biblioteca Bertoliana di Vicenza. Dàuli, attivo su una molteplicità di piani, tentò più volte di coinvolgere la Negri in diversi progetti editoriali, nessuno dei quali fu tuttavia destinato a concretizzarsi, per via sia degli impegni della poetessa, sia per le difficoltà che le varie proposte incontrarono. Dalle lettere emergono dati che consentono di allargare a Zangwill e a Chesterton la conoscenza da parte della Negri della contemporanea letteratura inglese, e, come corrispettivo, valorizzano l’attività di Dàuli nel contesto della vivace editoria milanese della prima metà del secolo scorso.
// This paper deals with editorial relationship between Ada Negri and the publisher, writer and translator Giuseppe Ugo Nalato (aka Gian Dàuli) through the analysis of five unpublished letters kept at the Bertoliana Library of Vicenza. Dàuli tried to involve Negri in several editorial projects, but none of these was realized, because of Negri’s commitments and of the difficulties that the various proposals met. The letters prove that Negri knew the works of contemporary English writers, such as Zangwill and Chesterton. They also show Dàuli’s activity in the milieu of Milan publishing industry in the first half of the last century.

L’ouvrage s’inscrit dans un champ de recherches en pleine expansion depuis le nouveau millénaire, le plurilinguisme littéraire, et qui a pour originalité d’historiciser le propos en explorant une période charnière, la fin du XIXe siècle.
Aucun ouvrage existant n’est vraiment centré sur ce tournant du siècle, moment où la doxa de pureté de la langue et les esprits nationalistes tendent à promouvoir, voire à imposer l’idéal du monolinguisme et où, parallèlement, persiste à travers l’Europe et le monde un nombre important de situations et d’expérimentations diverses à contre-courant du monolinguisme puriste.
Fruit d’un colloque qui s’est tenu dans le cadre du XXe Congrès de l’Association Internationale de Littérature Comparée à l’Université de la Sorbonne, à l’été 2013, les 14 contributeurs du présent volume interrogent cette situation paradoxale à partir de textes littéraires et de leurs auteurs, et contribuent à éclairer les différentes strates du plurilinguisme littéraire 1900 en leur complexe et souvent ambivalent enchevêtrement politique, éthique et esthétique – dont les problématiques ne sont pas sans rappeler les paradoxes du monde actuel dans un contexte où mondialisation et repli identitaire coexistent souvent.

This article outlines a conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) of the term “antisemitism” and the phrase “Jewish question” in English. In doing so, it suggests several ways in which manifestations of hostility and prejudice toward Jews historically, despite the absence of institutionalized or political antisemitism in modern Britain, may be analyzed. The article is divided into five parts. The first section presents many of the problems inherent in the overuse of the term “antisemitism” and some of its contemporary definitions. The second and third sections examine the early appearances of the term “antisemitism” and the charged phrase the “Jewish question” in Britain, with the latter making its appearance in English prior to German. The fourth section locates the problematics of dealing with anti-Jewish sentiments Britain within the context of imperial expansion and retreat. Attitudes towards Jews in Britain, it is suggested, should be situated against the backdrop of a complex relationship between Zionism and the British Empire, as well as the ways in which a discourse regarding these relationships had evolved and became indirectly linked to anti-Jewish stereotypes alongside a “philosemitic” discourse. The final section argues that the post-war moment (1945–1948) witnessed far-reaching transformations in the sense and meaning of the term “antisemitism.”

Die Beiträge des Bandes analysieren aus der Perspektive unterschiedlicher wissenschaftlicher Disziplinen künstlerisch-mediale Auseinandersetzungen mit dem Antisemitismus vor 1950. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, auf welche Weise jeweils Antisemitismus thematisiert, dargestellt und kritisiert wird. Allen Aufsätzen gemeinsam ist eine Orientierung am gegenwärtigen Stand transdisziplinärer Antisemitismusforschung. Die Analysen beziehen sich ebenso auf teilweise vergessene wie auch auf kanonisierte »Texte«, was im Sinne des erweiterten Textbegriffs Filme, Zeichnungen, Karikaturen, Comics etc. einschließt. Insgesamt wird so ein mehrsprachiges Korpus erfasst, das sich über einen Zeitraum erstreckt, der etwa mit Gotthold Ephraim Lessings Thematisierung antijüdischer Vorstellungen in seinem Drama »Die Juden« (1749) beginnt und bis zu Laura Z. Hobsons Roman »Gentleman’s Agreement« (1947) sowie dessen Verfilmung aus demselben Jahr reicht.
