Carthaginians

Junto con Heródoto y Tucídides, Polibio es considerado actualmente uno de los tres grandes historiadores griegos de la Antigüedad. Desde su reaparición en la Italia renacentista sus Historias han sido consideradas por diversos pensadores modernos como una fuente de inspiración para la reflexión política y filosófica, pero también por los historiadores a partir del siglo XIX como un objeto de estudio muy significativo, en especial, por la calidad de su información sobre la expansión romana por el Mediterráneo entre los siglos III-II a.C. En las últimas dos décadas se ha incrementado el interés historiográfico por la obra de este historiador helenístico tardío. Nuevos abordajes teóricos han contribuido, en efecto, a poner en evidencia la centralidad de su forma narrativa y su marco político-cultural en la construcción discursiva de sentidos específicos para su público. En consonancia con investigaciones recientes, este libro apunta a dilucidar algunos de los vínculos existentes entre los objetivos didácticos, de formación de la élite griega y romana, y la dimensión de la memoria, la identidad y la autorrepresentación del propio historiador aqueo como político. En líneas generales, y contra la tesis de una "romanización" de su pensamiento, se busca contribuir a resituar a Polibio dentro del horizonte político-cultural propiamente helenístico.

إن قرطاج لم تكن تعتمد نفس ديمقراطية أثينا. إن ديمقراطية أثينا هي نسخة سيئة أو مشوهة من ديمقراطية قرطاج الأصلية. إن "ديمقراطية قرطاج" كما سأطلق عليها خلال هذا المقال، أو "الديمقراطية الذكية" كما يطلق عليها بعض الأكاديميين، أو "ديمقراطية سقراط" كما يذهب آخرون لتسميتها، هي ديمقراطية تضع شروطا عقلية للراغبين في الترشح للمناصب قبل ترشحهم إلى تلك المناصب وذلك بالإضافة طبعا لكونهم لن يتقاضون أية أجور أو ثروات أو معاملات خاصة خلال تقلدهم لتلك المناصب. مثلا، لكي تكون مكلفا بشؤون المعمار فعليك أن تكون رجل معمار كفء يشهد لك زملائك في ذلك المجال بذلك أو تشهد لك أعمالك وهندستك بذلك قبل أن تترشح، وإن أردت أن تترشح لمنصب إداريا ما، فعليك أن تكون إداريا ناجحا قبل أن تترشح، وإن أردت قيادة جزء من العسكر ثانيا، إن قرطاج لم تكن تعتمد نفس ديمقراطية أثينا. إن ديمقراطية أثينا هي نسخة سيئة أو مشوهة من ديمقراطية قرطاج الأصلية. إن "ديمقراطية قرطاج" كما سأطلق عليها خلال هذا المقال، أو "الديمقراطية الذكية" كما يطلق عليها بعض الأكاديميين، أو "ديمقراطية سقراط" كما يذهب آخرون لتسميتها، هي ديمقراطية تضع شروطا عقلية للراغبين في الترشح للمناصب قبل ترشحهم إلى تلك المناصب وذلك بالإضافة طبعا لكونهم لن يتقاضون أية أجور أو ثروات أو معاملات خاصة خلال تقلدهم لتلك المناصب. مثلا، لكي تكون مكلفا بشؤون المعمار فعليك أن تكون رجل معمار كفء يشهد لك زملائك في ذلك المجال بذلك أو تشهد لك أعمالك وهندستك بذلك قبل أن تترشح، وإن أردت أن تترشح لمنصب إداريا ما، فعليك أن تكون إداريا ناجحا قبل أن تترشح، وإن أردت قيادة جزء من العسكر فعليك أن تكون عسكريا، وإن أردت تقلد إدارة صناعة السفن فعليك أن تكون ابن ذلك المجال ويشهد لك زملائك في ذلك بالنجاح، وهكذا… على عكس الأثينيين الذين كانوا ينتخبون قادتهم حسب أسمائهم وأشكالهم وطريقة خطابهم والأموال التي يضخونها في حملاتهم الإنتخابية. الأثينيون كانوا ينتخبون بأسلوب تغلب عليه العاطفة والأموال، عاطفة الشعب التي يتلاعب بها الحكام قصد بلوغ الحكم، وأموال الأثرياء الذين يكونون لوبياتهم عبر الدعاية والبروباغندا لوضع الحكام الذين يناسبونهم ويتماشون مع مصالحهم… .

Abstract: The paths followed by hemp in its conquest of the Maghreb
Following a previous article which reviewed current knowledge on the introduction of the hemp in the Maghreb, the author returns in the present note on ways borrowed by this species to become established durably.
Three ways are evoked: 1. The Mediterranean way, during the Antiquity, in the trail of the Punic; 2. The way of Egypt, which having been the front door by which spread in North Africa, in the XIIth century, ecstatic practices often associated with the consumption of cannabis; 3. The Sahelian way which brought african strains hemp in the saharan oases,
in a later time.

Résumé: Les voies suivies par le chanvre dans sa conquête du Maghreb
Donnant suite à un précédent article qui récapitulait les connaissances actuelles sur l’introduction du chanvre au Maghreb, l’auteur revient dans cette note sur les voies que cette espèce a empruntées pour s’y établir durablement.
Trois voies sont évoquées: 1. la voie méditerranéenne, durant l’Antiquité, dans le sillage des Puniques; 2. la voie de l’Égypte, qui fut la porte d’entrée par laquelle se diffusèrent au Maghreb, à partir du XIIème siècle, des pratiques extatiques s‘accompagnant souvent de cannabophagie; 3. la voie sahélienne qui amena des souches africaines de chanvre dans les oasis sahariennes, à une époque tardive.

The so-called “Punic question” is still today a very topical problem among scholars engaged in research on Phoenician civilization. In an attempt to make some contribution to this issue, some ceramic forms of the central-Mediterranean repertoire are discussed here, because of
their high value as archaeological indicators of broader historical phenomena. The survey seems to highlight a gradual process of cultural irradiation of Carthage since the mid/end of 8th century BC and allows us to propose a new dynamic concept of “Punic world”, based on
the identification of different “punicities” in a diachronic and synchronic way.

In 2019, a University of Bologna excavation at the Punic-Roman settlement of Santa Maria near Villaputzu (SU) unhearted a new fragment of a terracotta “ritual bread mould”. The artifact is ring-shaped and decorated with a frieze of “Phoenician-Cypriot” palmettes and a braid motif. It comes from a peripheral sector of the settlement, and
thus, for the Punic era, neither a connection with the nearby necropolis nor a different functional, productive, or cult-related intent can be excluded.

Ἐπικράτεια and ἐπαρχία are two terms used by the ancient sources to describe the Carthaginian presence in Western Sicily. Due to a lack of information about the character and details of this presence, it is crucial to precisely understand the terminology employed by our sources and all its nuances. The article challenges the widely accepted opinion that the nouns ἐπικράτεια and ἐπαρχία can be treated as synonyms. To verify whether this assumption is correct or not, a careful analysis of how the ancient authors (Polybius, Diodorus Siculus and Plutarch) used both nouns, as well as other related forms, is conducted. To make up for the limited number of occurrences of ἐπικράτεια in the analysed corpus, the relevant part of the examination also includes the use of this noun in Strabo's Geography. The analysis allows us to highlight a significant change in the meaning of the two terms between the 2 nd century (Polybius) and the mid-1 st century BC (Diodorus). This change reflects a development in the Greek political and administrative vocabulary, which was adjusting to a new reality of the Mediterranean world being organised into Roman provinces. The conducted analysis also allows us to better understand the complexity of the Carthaginian position in Western Sicily.

El cine italiano ha creado numerosos estereotipos relacionados con la Antigüedad con influencia en otras filmografías e incluso en el imaginario colectivo mundial. La manipulación maniquea de la representación de Cartago y los cartagineses en las películas italianas les otorgaba unas características más orientales que africanas, incluyendo elementos anacrónicos árabes, musulmanes o judíos. Este texto sigue la creación y desarrollo de esta visión negativa de lo cartaginés en el cine italiano, atendiendo a la doble perspectiva del cine histórico sobre la Antigüedad, que no solo retrata el pasado, sino que también refleja de manera implícita el presente.
ABSTRACT: Italian cinema has created numerous stereotypes related to Antiquity that influence other filmographies and even the collective world imagination. The Manichean manipulation of the representation of Carthage and the Carthaginians in Italian films gave them characteristics more Oriental than African, including anachronistic Arab, Muslim, or Jewish elements. This article traces the creation and development of this negative vision of the Carthaginian in Italian Cinema, dealing with the double perspective of historical cinema on Antiquity, which not only
portrays the past but also implicitly reflects the present.

This presentation interrogates the function of queerness in Frank McGuinness’s play Carthaginians in terms of class, politics, religion and the representation of the ideal national subject. It seeks to draw similarities between the typical ‘queerness’ of the homosexual character Dido and the ‘queering’ of the Catholic’s waiting for their dead to rise in the wake of Bloody Sunday.

This presentation seeks to prove that through the juxtaposition of the Roman/Carthaginian relationship Dido’s presence as a the queer, male queen of Carthage undermines the traditional representation of Mother Ireland, and in turn represents the characters and their class as queer in this play. In this text to be Carthaginian, that is; feminine, Catholic and victim, is to be other.

A large emphasis is placed on representations of femininity and masculinity in this text and as such, Judith Butler and Brian Singleton’s theories on gender will be useful in determining the extent of these representations. In terms of play and ritual, Schechner’s ideologies, will help to frame this argument and to ground the notion of the action of the text in terms of play. The colonial angle of this piece speaks for itself but this presentation will also present arguments from Butler-Cullingford and Tony Corbett as to how the Roman/Carthaginian, Protestant/Catholic, British/Irish couplings work within the text and how this relates back to the queer/other representations of the characters.

This presentation seeks to promote the idea that through the queering of the Catholic, victimised characters onstage, McGuinness elevates them by making them other and builds the framework for representing a new national ideal through the use of a Queer character. It also aims to illustrate that to be queer doesn’t necessarily mean to be homosexual, that in the murky realm of Irish national, cultural and religious identity, you can be queer in many ways.
