Abstract: This essay considers the ways in which Hegel's theory of ethical life (Sittlichkeit) can provide us with a different understanding of our ethical obligations to animals. I argue that animal abuse and its toleration constitutes a distortion the ethical substance that we as social beings absorb. As a result, the state has a direct duty to protect animals from pain and suffering and to prevent the emergence of institutions and practices that foster such abuse and suffering. Arguing against the rights-based approach to animal welfare, I argue that we can see a more compelling argument in the anthropocentric understanding of our ethical lives and obligations to others. Seeing ethical life as "functionalist" in nature, I therefore argue that the approach I put forth, what I call "reflexive ethics," can provide us with a more rational basis for the legitimacy of legislation that protects animals from abuse, cruelty, and suffering.

With the publication of an extended editorial titled 'Animal Studies and Art: Elephants in the Room' by Giovanni Aloi, Editor in Chief of 'Antennae', the journal embarks on a new and challenging year-long project constituting somewhat of a departure from the theoretical approaches of animal studies for the purpose of conceiving new productivities specific to art. This project is provocatively titled 'Beyond Animal Studies'.
At the end of March 2015 the publication of two installments dedicated to multispecies-Intra-action: new ways of thinking multispecies aesthetics through Karen Barad’s agential realism (co-edited with artist/curator Madeleine Boyd) will mark the beginning of this journey. This first offering will be followed by an issue edited by artists and theorists Suzanne Anker and Sabine Flach focusing on the proceedings of an exciting conference dedicated to bioart titled 'Naturally Hypernatural' that took place in New York (November 2014). The last segment of this publishing project will comprise two issues on art and environment that will be made available in December 2015 and March 2016.
'Animal Studies and Art: Elephants in the Room’ is the developed and expanded version of the keynote address Giovanni Aloi gave at the University of Wurzburg in autumn 2014. Its content stems from a genuine sense of concern with regards to current affairs in animal studies, its involvement with contemporary art, and the challenges scholars and artists face in engaging with multidisciplinarity within this context.

El objetivo de este artículo es exponer algunos de los principales trabajos desarrollados en la filosofía moral, arguyendo cómo éstos se han hecho cargo (o no) del estatus moral de los animales no humanos. Para lograr este objetivo, el trabajo se divide en tres apartados. En primer lugar, delimito el objeto de estudio “animales” y me refiero a algunos mitos en relación con ellos. En segundo lugar, expongo someramente los trabajos filosóficos de las principales corrientes en filosofía moral. Finalmente, introduzco como una alternativa a la ética tradicional los postulados desarrollados desde la ética de la compasión.

Notre rapport juridique avec les animaux a-t-il changé depuis la réforme du droit animalier de 2015 ? Le Code civil du Québec établit clairement que les animaux ne sont pas des biens mais des êtres doués de sensibilité. De plus, la Loi sur le bien-être et la sécurité de l’animal prévoit de nouvelles protections juridiques visant à encadrer ce constat. Malgré ces changements législatifs, beaucoup doutent que le droit de mise à mort des animaux non humains ait évolué. Qu’en est-il vraiment ?

Cet article soutient que la réforme du droit animalier limite le droit de vie et de mort que les êtres humains exercent sur les animaux non humains. Il constate d’abord que les tribunaux considèrent que cette réforme n’a imposé aucune restriction à l’euthanasie ou l’abattage des animaux, hormis dans la méthode. L’article explique ensuite en quoi cette interprétation de la réforme du droit animalier, qui conclut à la survie d’un droit de mise à mort quel qu’en soit le motif, semble erronée. Il soutient de plus que l’évolution des mentalités pourra également affecter le droit de tuer les animaux.

Increasingly high-profile research is being undertaken into the socio-environmental challenges associated with the overproduction and consumption of food from animals. Transforming food systems to mitigate climate change and hidden hunger, ensure food security and good health all point to reducing animal-based foods as a key lever. Moving beyond animal-based food systems is a societal grand challenge requiring coordinated international research by the social sciences and humanities. A 'selective openness' to this range of disciplines has been observed within multi-discipline research programmes designed to address societal grand challenges including those concerned with the sustainability of food systems, inhibiting the impact of social sciences and humanities. Extraterritorial jurisdiction stands at the juncture of international law and animal law and promises to open a path to understanding and resolving the global problems that challenge the core of animal law. As corporations have relocated and the animal industry (agriculture, medical research, entertainment, etc.) has dispersed its production facilities across the territories of multiple states, regulatory gaps and fears of a race to the bottom have become a pressing issue of global policy. This book provides enough background to allow readers to understand why extraterritorial jurisdiction must respond to these developments, counters objections that readers might raise, and describes how to improve animal law in tandem. The heart of the work is a fully-fledged catalogue of options for extraterritorial jurisdiction, which states can employ to strengthen their animal laws. The book offers top-down perspectives drawn from general international law and trade law, and complements them by a bottom-up up view from the perspective of animal law. The approach connects the law of jurisdiction to substantive law and opens up deeper questions about moral directionality, state and corporate duties owed animals, and the comparative advantages of constitutional, criminal, and administrative animal law. To ensure that extraterritorial animal law does not become complicit in oppressing ethnic and cultural minorities, the book offers critical interdisciplinary perspectives, informed by posthumanist and postcolonialist discourse. Readers will further learn when and how extraterritorial jurisdiction violates international law, and the consequences of exercising it illegally under international law. This work answers questions about how and why extraterritorial jurisdiction can overcome the steepest hurdles for animal law and help move us toward a just global interspecies community.

This is a topic proposal for my researched based argument in Global Research Seminar Class with Dr. David Colon. I hope to write my researched based argument on the relationship between humans and animals in Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee and there importance/significance. The relationship between the two represents the characters social, ethical and moral transformations throughout the novel by literary strategies such as symbolism and allegory.

Drawing upon research that examines neoliberal organizational practices, necrocapitalism, and the factory farming methods used in modern corporate slaughterhouses, this paper demonstrates how the art of public deception has been taken to highly advanced levels by industries that have something to hide. Despite the growing demand for positive change in the ways that humanity lives on the planet, and the ubiquitous presence of corporate social responsibility platforms, many industries that cause harm seek to hide the details of mass production methods in order further their agendas of increasing profits, regardless of the impact on the quality of human and animal life. By reviewing a 6-month ethnographic study conducted inside a large Nebraska slaughterhouse, this paper will examine how the slaughter industry uses the non-communication strategies of distance and concealment to hide factory farming methods from the light of public scrutiny. Based on these findings, non-communication as a viable corporate communication strategy will be explored along with a call for further research into non-communication practices in other sectors of the economy.

In this chapter, I argue that we must think about justice for all animals through the cosmopolitan lens. After some preliminary remarks about global justice and cosmopolitanism, I explore the ways in which the current global order maintains and exacerbates systems of violence and oppression that target nonhuman animals. I argue that the theoretical foundations of cosmopolitanism necessitate the inclusion of many, if not all, sentient animals. Furthermore, I suggest that defenders of nonhuman animal rights should be cosmopolitans about global justice and explain why this does not require us to forsake our special relationships. I conclude with a plea to both mainstream defenders of cosmopolitanism and defenders of political justice for nonhuman animals to unite in developing genuinely inclusive theories of justice.

This 5-part series of articles  (written as an undergraduate major in Philosophy and Government) at the College of William and Mary) is the first major study of the animal rights and animal liberation movement that was fully emerging in the United States.  It examines the organization, structure, goals, and ideas of those working to protect non-human animals.  (Note: unpublished but also available upon request from the author or though the library at the College of William and Mary—and a separate part of this work— is an original theory and analysis of "Inter-specific Justice" (i.e., for both human and non-human animals).

The advent of Rights of Nature (RoN) marks a new paradigm shift in the philosophical approach to nature. As such, the concept has generated enthusiasm amongst environmentalists and legal scholars. This is not surprising since granting legal personhood to nature seems to present itself as a relative easy fix for the multitude of deficiencies of “modern” environmental law. However, when critically assessed, many of the underlying assumptions justifying a shift towards rights-based approaches to nature are open to challenge. In this paper, which takes a more critical stance on the topic of RoN, it is submitted that also the much-criticized modern environmental law is moving towards a recognition of the intrinsic value of nature, puts breaks on property rights, offers remediation actions for pure ecological damage and also increasingly grants environmental ngos wide access to courts. The Belgian radical environmental group Aardewerk invited me to give a presentation on my research, so I quickly invented this title (it's a bit too Star Warsy, perhaps) and combined material from two of my papers on hunting. Not sure how it turned out, but it was fun nonetheless.

David J. Gunkel was a keynote speaker for “Identity, Agency, and the Digital Nexus”, April 2013, SSHRC funded  international symposium hosted by Athabasca University. His talk challenged the audience to reframe and rethink the “human-machine” binary in 21st century understandings of ethics and agency. Later that year Gunkel talked with Paul Kellogg over Skype to discuss some of the points raised in the presentation, and other key ideas embedded in Gunkel's 2012 publication, "The Machine Question: Critical Perspectives on AI, Robots and Ethics." Gunkel is the Presidential Teaching Professor of Communication Studies at Northern Illinois University. The symposium was funded by a Connection Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and organized by Dr. Raphael Foshay, MA-IS Program Director at Athabasca University.

This book presents a cultural history of human-animal relations in Germany, Japan, Russia and the United States, with a focus on the uses of animals for comfort, healing and in developing a sense of well-being. Fujimura and Nommensen discuss the contexts in which the culture of wellbeing has developed and incorporated alternative therapies with animals. The authors turn to qualitative research conducted over a period of two years in veterinary clinics, hospices, reading programs, search and rescue organizations as well as an extensive review of existing literature on cultural studies of human-animal relations to inform their analysis of complex ways in which humans and animals interact. The extent to which animals are accepted either as members of society or, in contrast, as mere material possessions poses a cultural contradiction leading to questions of the ethical treatment of animals.

ABSTRACT
It is argued that using animals in research is morally wrong when the research is nontherapeutic and harmful to the animals. This article discusses methods of moral reasoning and discusses how arguments on this and other bioethical issues might be defended and critiqued. A basic method of moral argument analysis is presented and used to show that common objections to the view that “animal research is morally wrong” fail: ie, common arguments for the view that “animal research is morally permissible” are demonstrably unsound or in need of defense. It is argued that the best explanations why harmful,
nontherapeutic research on human beings is wrong, ie, what it is about humans that makes such experimentation wrong, apply to many animals as well. Thus, harmful and nontherapeutic animal experimentation is wrong for reasons similar to the reasons that harmful and nontherapeutic human
experimentation is wrong.

El presente trabajo de investigación busca aportar a la discusión en torno al antiespecismo como posicionamiento político que pone en cuestión la relación existente entre los humanos y los demás animales, hoy determinada por el carácter ideológico de la visión especista predominante. En función de lo anterior, se identifican diversas corrientes que buscan cuestionar la hegemonía especista que impera a nivel global en la relación que desarrolla el ser humano con los demás animales.

No obstante, a raíz de la ineficiencia crítica de las distintas corrientes antiespecistas imperantes, el desarrollo de una propuesta antiespecista de carácter contrahegemónico responde al contexto actual del presente debate. Esta propuesta se entiende como una opción viable para la articulación efectiva del antiespecismo en el escenario de pluralidad de luchas que se manifiesta tras la posguerra. Esta articulación y re significación del antiespecismo busca disputar las nociones ideológicas impuestas por el grupo dominante. De este modo, la presente investigación identifica los principales conceptos que subyacen al antiespecismo, contrastando las corrientes predominantes y diferenciando la funcionalidad de los elementos constitutivos de estas, ya sea como perpetuadoras del especismo, o bien como críticas de éste último, recabando así los elementos necesarios para la elaboración de un antiespecismo contrahegemónico.

In this paper I defend the claim that many sentient nonhuman animals have a right to privacy. I begin by outlining the view that the human right to privacy protects our interest in shaping different relationships with one another by giving us control over how we present ourselves to others. I then draw on empirical research to show that nonhuman animals also have this interest, which grounds a right to privacy against us. I further argue that we can violate this right even when other animals are unaware that we are watching them.

The antivivisection movement and its relationship to feminism provides a cultural and historical backdrop for H. G. Wells’ science fiction novella, The Island of Doctor Moreau, published in 1896. Wells was a lifelong supporter of the feminist movement, and although he was a member of the Research Defense Society, he remained somewhat sympathetic to the antivivisectionist cause. While Wells never openly objected to vivisection himself, his novella undoubtedly provided the “most terrifying accent” to “the icon of woman and vivisected animal." Critiquing science’s Machiavellian role in the highly industrialized world of modern capitalism, Wells dissects the systematic domination of society’s most vulnerable populations, an obvious concern for the feminists that opposed vivisection, and the “myth of objectivity, distance, disembodiment, and separation from the world of nature” in male-dominated scientific discourse.

While the majority of scholarly as well as public discourse concerning food security makes its primary focus human welfare, questions about whether nonhuman animals figure into that discourse in any significant way beyond the implications of animal agriculture for human health and atmospheric stability remain undertheorized. I'll argue that nonhuman animals should matter greatly to anyone who works at the thorny intersections of structural inequality and environmental justice, especially feminists and antiracism theorists, activists, and policymakers. Why? • The very ways in which we conceive nonhuman animal bodies as food reinforces a social and economic order whereby the commodifiability of sex, gender, race, and class is made possible. Nonhuman animals are not invisible in this order, but they are also not visible as living creatures capable of pleasure and suffering. This state of affairs advantages the beneficiaries of capitalism, themselves disproportionately white, Western(ized) men, and cannot be corrected without taking every intersection-sex, gender, race, indigenous status, species, and ecology-into account. • As food sets the precedent for the conversion of living sentient entities into commodifiable exchange value, thereby reinforcing a structural inequality not only heteropatriarchal and racialized, but essentially human chauvinistic. On this view, human beings are presumed to be the arbiter of all value, and some human beings, namely some men, determine not only social place but also existential condition. As food means as instrument, consumable, disposable according to a hierarchically ordered worldview that systemically privileges a very few at the expense of the very many. • While the causes of food insecurity include natural events like drought, flood, and disease, its primary (though often elided) cause is structural

The animal rights movement is fundamentally based on love for other animals and a radical recognition of human-nonhuman relationships as valid and important. In a world that has normalized wholescale violence against other animals, recognizing nonhuman animal personhood and expressing compassion for all kinds is a vital act of social justice.  This talk examines social movement theories of liberation for other animals with specific reference to the gay rights movement as an adjacent project from which we might draw inspiration and wisdom.

In a qualitative content analysis of The Vegan Society’s quarterly publication, The Vegan, spanning 73 years and nearly 300 issues, the trajectory of one of the world’s most radical and compassionate counter cuisine collectives is presented and critically assessed. The Vegan Society’s history provides a case study on the ways in which social movements negotiate difference and conflict. Specifically, this article highlights the challenges of identity, professionalization, and factionalism across the 20th and 21st centuries. This research also puts into perspective the cultural impact that veganism has had on Western society, namely the dramatic increase in vegan consumers, vegan products, and the normalcy of vegan nutrition.

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has acquired worldwide relevance since 1970s, namely thanks to the revolution brought by the civil society. However, some scholars claim that nowadays the concept of CSR has been emptied of its social value and it is instead used as a means to create more economic profit. Thus, this research paper is an attempt to investigate whether the theory of a capitalist CSR can be applied to the case study of the Italian Benetton Group. To do this, two main activities of the BG ("shockvertising" and dialogue with civil society) will be studied through discourse analysis.
