Applicare le metodologie dell'analisi delle reti sociali all'ambito della ricerca storica può fornire una misura quantitativa quanto qualitativa a supporto degli storici. Nella fattispecie si vuole presentare uno studio in cui si è analizzata una vasta gamma di documenti relativi agli anni precedenti la famosa Battaglia di Benevento avvenuta nel febbraio del 1266 in cui Manfredi, Re di Sicilia, perse la vita a causa di un presunto tradimento dei baroni che dovevano supportarlo in battaglia. Il grafo delle relazioni creato a partire dalla vastissima documentazione online (es. Regesta imperii) e non (es. Registri Angioini) ha permesso di ricostruire una fitta rete di comunicazioni tra le figure principali del periodo: il Papa Clemente IV (documenti dal 1265 al 1266), Manfredi (documenti dal 1257 al 1266) e Carlo I d'Angiò (1265 al 1267). Infine la lunga serie di personalità citate nella documentazione ha consentito, grazie all'uso del software UciNet, una puntuale applicazione di alcune euristiche proprie dell'analisi di rete permettendo dapprima un'analisi su diversi piani semantici e infine un bilancio sul grafo complessivo dei livelli di Degree e Betwenness su quei nodi che storicamente sono individuati come i personaggi chiave della disfatta di Manfredi. I risultati mostrano come ad alti livelli di Betweenness e Degree il soggetto è tra quelli indicati come traditore dagli storici, mentre coloro che hanno un basso grado di Betweenness nonostante Degree alta, pare siano coloro che gli storici identificano come fedelissimi al Re e che effettivamente morirono nella battaglia o furono imprigionati e uccisi qualche mese dopo. Uno sviluppo futuro potrebbe prevedere misure predittive sul grafo o l'aggiunta della rete dei matrimoni tra le varie famiglie coinvolte nell'analisi.

There were many doctors and surgeons in the Kingdom of Hungary in early Angevin-era, but we know little their personal and medicallives. In the first part of this essay I examine many persons who hold the title of doctor (medicus). Among them there were many ecclesiastical person, but we find them incities. In this paper I choosen one of them, Pertoldus, who was the king’s surgeon and doctor (cirurgus seu medicus regis). As a citizen of Esztergom, he gained fields, houses and vineyards around the city of Esztergom by the grace of his king, Charles I. He married twice, he had three sons, but his ancestors were unknown. Before 1333, when the king and his son, Andrew went to Naples in hope to acquire the Angevin-ancestors’ throne, Pertoldus has sell his properties. After the South-Italian journey, he has disappeared from sources.

Enrico di Castiglia è un caso emblematico di cavaliere e principe alla ricerca di una signoria. Dopo aver guidato senza successo una ribellione nobiliare contro il celebre fratello Alfonso X el Sabio (1252-1284) re di Castiglia, prese la via dell’esilio. Barcellona, Londra e Tunisi furono le mete dei suoi viaggi. In Africa guadagnò grandi onori e ricchezze combattendo con i suoi cavalieri al servizio del sultano di Tunisi, che nel 1258 si era proclamato califfo. Venuto a sapere della spedizione angioina volta alla conquista del regno di Sicilia, il principe castigliano prestò la somma di 40.000 once d’oro a Carlo d’Angiò chiedendo come interesse in caso di vittoria la concessione di una signoria. La vittoria angioina di Benevento tuttavia lo lasciò a mani vuote e, dopo alcuni incontri, infruttuosi, con il papa e con Carlo d’Angiò, Enrico accettò l’elezione a senatore di Roma. Governò il comune capitolino sostenendo il “popolo” contro le aspirazioni nobiliari e angioine. Sottomise all’autorità comunale diversi centri del Patrimonium Beati Petri con la diplomazia o con la forza delle armi. Nel 1267 si schierò dalla parte di Corradino che scendeva in Italia per reclamare l’eredità paterna del regno di Sicilia, e utilizzò l’arma della propaganda politica (poesia di argomento politico, cerimonie pubbliche, laudes regiae) per sostenere la sua causa, denigrare Carlo d’Angiò e trovare nuovi alleati. Nel frattempo anche la corte papale metteva in atto una propaganda contraria al principe Enrico e favorevole a Carlo d’Angiò, in particolare con i sermoni del cardinale francese Odo da Châteauroux, che dipingeva Enrico di Castiglia, Corradino e il sultano di Babilonia come i tre spiriti immondi dell’Apocalisse e presentava invece il fratello del re di Francia come campione e difensore della Chiesa e del popolo cristiano. I due piani si intersecano in occasione della battaglia di Tagliacozzo presentata dalla propaganda di Enrico come una facile vittoria per Corradino e tutti coloro che avessero militato sotto le sue bandiere, e vissuta invece momento per momento dal cardinale francese a causa delle notizie, ora cattive, poi confuse e infine buone, che man mano arrivavano alla corte papale. Giustiziato Corradino nella pubblica piazza, Enrico fu condannato all’ergastolo. Dopo 23 anni di prigionia verrà liberato da Carlo II lo Zoppo e, tornato prima a Tunisi e poi in patria, divenne principe-reggente al trono di Castiglia-Leon per il nipotino Fernando IV.

Considers the various works of Robert Grosseteste (bishop of Lincoln 1235-53) concerning kingship, the responsibilities of rulers and the nature of power, in order to assess what influence the bishop’s arguments might have exercised on his disciple, Simon de Montfort, who led a revolution against King Henry III of England in the late 1250s. This discussion explores the memorandum created for Grosseteste outlining the case he made at the papal court in 1250 against the archbishop of Canterbury, which the bishop later sent to Montfort, as well as Grosseteste’s commentary on book eight of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics that inspired his case, and several of Grosseteste’s letters.

Eleanor of Aquitaine has undoubtedly suffered more than most historical figures from excessive mythologising, and as a result has “inspired some of the very worst historical writing devoted to the European Middle Ages”.  In the 1940s and 1950s Frank Chambers and H.G. Richardson made the first sallies in attempting to dispel the more lurid parts of the legend surrounding Eleanor, one which was (and would continue to be) widely propagated by scholars and those involved in the less factually conscionable spheres of literature, film and painting in which Eleanor has proved so perpetually fascinating. Chambers, however, argued that “these stories, false as they are, generally have some basis in fact”.  This demonstrates the problem of disentangling the fact from the fiction when it comes to the study of Eleanor. However, these early attempts to “dismantle the mythic scaffolding that has encased her for centuries” did not initially attract much attention.  This is testimony to the lasting power and endurance of Eleanor’s legend which has continued to influence modern historians.  However, it would be fair to state that in recent decades historians have made important re-appraisals of Eleanor, rehabilitating her reputation and dismantling the mythology which surrounds her.

A royal dynasty cultivates its traditions above all through the commemoration of its ancestors. Tombs play a central role in this. This study examines the tombs of the royal house of Anjou erected in the Kingdom of Sicily (Naples) by the first of the ruling generations in the second half of the 13th century and the first half of the 14th century.
The monuments had concretely tangible political and legitimising functions, but they can also be explained by the piety and the understanding of rule of their time. Both aspects are dealt with in this book. The study contributes to the systematic research of the two fundamental functions of funerary monuments, the memoria of the deceased and the representation of the kingdom by the royal family.
The tombs of the royal house of Anjou present themselves as a form of a well planned, public staging of their own lineage.

This chapter investigates the form and consequences of the English invasion of Ireland, c.1166-c.1254, situated within the wider framework of European political configurations and frontier societies. A rapid narrative of the cut and thrust of medieval conquest is interwoven with the analysis of major themes relating to lordship and colonisation.

"The knight's iconography into Neapolitan illumination during the Angevin age" was the main subject of my postgraduate degree dissertation in 2010. The degree thesis was focused on the evolution of the knight's iconography during the first Angevin domination (1266 - 1343), with some reference to the Chivalric culture and Feudal society that spread over Europe between 11th and 14th century b. C.

Considering the extensive loss of medieval decoration in the Neapolitan church of S. Chiara, the surviving 14th century high altar deserves special attention. One third of its structure and most of its sculptural embellishment are lost, but the altar can still be examined for a clear understanding of its components (architecture, reliefs, sculptures). This paper presents an overall view of this monument in order to re-consider issues concerning its commission, chronology and authorship. Closer examination, attempted here for the first time, suggests that the Florentine sculptor Pacio Bertini played a more important role than argued before, and contextualizes the high altar of S. Chiara within Neapolitan sculpture in the 1330s. These acknowledgments allow to confirm that the work was entirely or mostly completed by the year 1340, when the church was solemnly consecrated.

la chiesa della Parigoritissa di Arta rappresenta
un caso esemplare della committenza dei
Comnenoduca nella capitale di quello che è comunemente
noto come Despotato d’Epiro. Nelle
sue forme attuali, esso è riconducibile all’iniziativa
di Niceforo I (1267/1268 – 1296/1298),
che trasformò radicalmente una precedente
costruzione, voluta pochi decenni prima dal
padre, Michele II (1230 ca – 1267/1268). La
‘nuova’ Parigoritissa fu concepita secondo un
progetto grandioso, volto non solo a rivendicare
e appropriarsi dell’eredità paterna (come
era accaduto per la Pantanassa di Philippiada),
ma anche a rappresentare il potere di una giovane
dinastia in cerca del suo palcoscenico. Per
la sua posizione geografica, infatti, il cosiddetto
Despotato aveva alleanze e dissidi con gli imperatori
bizantini di Costantinopoli e i regnanti
angioini in Italia Meridionale. Il presente articolo
fornisce un quadro generale del problema
critico e cerca di offrire una nuova chiave di
lettura di questa importante committenza, alla
luce della congiuntura politico-diplomatica degli
ultimi anni di regno di Niceforo I. Essa può
aiutare infatti a chiarire alcuni aspetti particolari
della Parigoritissa: dal baldacchino sulle gallerie
ai mosaici e alle sculture occidentali nel naos.

Le LEM et l’Université Orientale de Naples organisent, à partir de fin septembre, une exposition virtuelle sur Robert d’Anjou et son époque.
L’exposition virtuelle "Les savoirs à Naples à l’époque de Robert d’Anjou" (octobre 2021) se propose de reconstituer la bibliothèque du roi angevin, en présentant des manuscrits écrits à sa demande ainsi que des manuscrits postérieurs ou pouvant être rattachés à son entourage.

Eleanor of Aquitaine (1124-1204) ranks as a favourite of modern biographers, and in the twentieth-century writings on this twelfth-century personality attained the proportions of a 'romanticizing "Eleanor industry".' 1 In approaching Eleanor, historians today face the sharply differing standards of her medieval contemporaries, modern scholars, and popular writers in depicting a powerful woman's place in medieval society and government. Because of this, the twelfth century's most famous woman can provoke either modern biographers' 'uncritical enthusiasm, or else curiously grudging dismissal'. 2 Perhaps the primary example of the enthusiastic approach is Amy Kelly's Eleanor of Aquitaine and the Four Kings, first published over a half century ago and still in print. 3 W. L. Warren's dismissal of Eleanor in his biography of her second husband, Henry II shows the grudging attitude, 'To judge from the chroniclers, the most striking fact about Eleanor is her utter insignificance in Henry II's reign.' 4

The so-called Fonthill Vase (sometimes also called the Gaignières-Fonthill Vase), preserved today at the National Museum of Ireland, is generally regarded as the oldest well-documented Chinese porcelain
object surviving in Europe. Unrecognized for a long time, the vase has
been in Dublin since 1882. Its history,  however, can be traced back to the 14th century thanks to a 17th-century drawing documenting its splendid Gothic mounting. Although the importance of the Fonthill Vase has been recognized for a long time, a lot of confusion still surrounds its true history. In the present paper, I summarize the results of decades of research dedicated to the vase and I would also like to call attention to a hitherto largely neglected document of its history, preserved at the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest.
