"Abstract

Calendars in the Book of Esther: Purim, Festivals, Cosmology

This paper suggests that Esther added an extra month and a day to the king’s
calendar to thwart the date chosen by Haman for the annihilation of the Jews. The result was that the Jews in the provinces were preparing and celebrating Passover when the Jews of Sushan, who had the benefit of additional time, were fighting then feasting. Esther’s
intervention is related to Babylonian apotropaic calendar manipulation and the text indicates how a 354-day lunar calendar and a 360-day calendar might work. The analysis includes dates for Shavuot followed by different groups in Second Temple Judaism, one of which is reflected in a 364-day calendar scheme that is also attested at Qumran.

This commentary is the start of a series presenting various topics found in seven major texts in the jyotis canon. The texts I chose are listed in chronological order as follows:

Yavanajātaka of Sphujidhvaja (3rd century CE)
Vṛddhayavanajātaka of Mīnarāja (4th century CE)
Bṛhajjātaka of Varāhamihira (6th century CE)
Sārāvalī of Kalyāṇavarma (9th century CE)
Horāsāraḥ of Pṛthuyaśas (9th to 14th century CE)
Jātakapārijāta of Vaidyanātha (15th century CE)
Phaladīpikā of Mantreśvara (after JPJ in the 15th century CE)

Most of these texts initially discuss the zodiac signs, planets, and strength, so these will be the first set of topics in this series. I translated every chapter of the above Sanskrit texts that deal specifically with the topics of this commentary.

Even though the Bṛhatpārāśarahorā of Pārāśara (between the 7th or 8th century CE) is in vogue, I chose not to use it in this canon review because there are some issues with the current published versions of it.

David Pingree’s commentary on the Yavanajātaka takes a far more detailed and expansive look at the topics covered in this commentary than I could ever do. I wrote this commentary in order to walk some of the same steps that Pingree did, gain my own understanding of the texts that I examined, and present them in my own way. Pingree’s publications were a great help in writing this commentary and I would highly recommend them. This commentary will point out a number of ideas that Pingree misstated or overlooked. In particular, Pingree does seem to be a bit over generous at times when assigning similarities between foreign and native sources, and also when exclusively making correspondences among the native jyotis sources. Given the volume and scope of Pingree’s work, these oversights would be within the norm of errors.

Pingree often gets painted with a broad brush that he advocated a one way transmission of horoscopic knowledge to India from Greece. This is not entirely true. If one would read the introduction to his commentary on the Yavanajātaka, one would see that he was just putting forth his best possible guess in regards to the horoscopic knowledge origins of India from the source materials available to him. He outright states that knowledge between India and Greece went both ways. Many important texts have been lost or have yet to be translated that would fill in the gaps with the subject matter of this commentary. In a very real sense, we are working with fragments of the past in regards to the history of jyotis.

For Michel Foucault, governing of people is only possible through the “manifestation of truth” of rulers, an act or a ritual, whose nature and ways change according to time and society. His series of lectures, titled “On the Government of the Living”, begin with an example from the Roman Empire, namely Septimius Severus’ horoscope, which he got painted on the ceiling of his palace. In most cases concerning the Roman emperors, the manifestation of truth, i.e. the manifestation of the truth of one’s existence, of the truth of the things that one realises through his body and behaviours as a prerequisite of political power, is possible through astrological knowledge, whereas in Classical Greek tragedy and politics, this is a result of secular research and investigation. Although Foucault devotes a considerable space for the latter, he does not discuss why the Greek and Roman practices differ or why, contrary to the Roman imperial period, horoscopes were not used as a way of manifestation of truth in the Roman Republic. He does, however, claim that the truth to be manifested in pagan antiquity, which was “outside” the individual, transformed into a concept of truth that resided “in” the individual, which must be revealed through baptism and confession, and that this new idea formed the basis of modern governmentality we experience today. This article is an attempt to explain and complement Foucault’s ideas on the manifestation of truth in  antiquity.

Bu olmadan iktidarın işlemesi nerdeyse imkânsız gibidir. Foucault, Roma imparatoru Septimius Severus’un sarayının tavanına çizdirdiği horoskopunu buna bir örnek olarak seçmiştir. Hakikatin, daha doğrusu kişinin varlığının, bedeniyle yaptığı şeylerin veya davranış biçimlerinin hakikatinin tezahürü, birçok Roma imparatoru için astrolojik bilgi üzerinden gerçekleşirken, Klasik Yunan tragedyalarında ve siyasetinde bu süreç tek başına tanrısal ya da göksel bir yolla değil, fakat insanların belirli seküler araştırma ve soruşturma süreçleriyle ortaya çıkar. Klasik Yunan’da iktidarın kullanımının ön şartı olan kanıt ve şahitliğin yerini Roma İmparatorluğu’nda kehanet alır. Foucault ne bu değişimin nasıl gerçekleştiği ne de neden Roma Cumhuriyeti’nde horoskopların benzer bir işleve sahip olmadığını açıklar. Ona göre, Hıristiyanlığa kadar insanların dışında bulunan ve ifşa edilmesi gereken hakikat, yeni dinle birlikte insanların içinde yer alan ve dışarı çıkarılması gereken bir şey hâline gelmiş ve bu da modern yönetimselliğin temelini oluşturmuştur. Bu makale düşünürün Antik Çağ’da hakikatin tezahürüyle ilgili fikirlerini açıklamayı ve gerekli yerlerde tamamlamayı amaçlamaktadır.

After evoking the theory of universal sympathy, which considers the cosmos as a whole whose parts are closely linked, this article deals, through the prism of the stomach, with zodiacal, decanal and planetary melothesy, whose mode of operation is broadly illustrated: if associations of ideas are often the basis of the links uniting the various parts of the human body to the zodiacal signs, decans or planets, these links can also be explained by mythology and physics. Are also presented astrological gems that are believed to be able to cure stomach diseases.

While the Book of Mormon recounts a variety of miracles, two miraculous events have special significance, the illuminated night and associated signs and wonders and the appearance of a new star in Mesoamerica previous to the birth of Christ, and the darkness and destruction which occurred upon his death.  In a previous work, The Geology of the Book of Mormon, I elucidated a scientific explanation of the destruction, here I will provide the most likely scientific explanation for the illuminated night and signs and wonders.  Also established is the correlation of the day of Christ’s birth with a solar eclipse, seen both in Mesoamerica and Mesopotamia, and the Old World astrological calculation used by the Magi of the day of Christ’s birth, together with a planetary Bethlehem Star and a separate Mesoamerican new star as a comet.  Exact dates are then determined for Christ’s birth and death based on this astronomical information and information from the Book of Mormon and associated information.

The author states that scholars have been fascinated by the similarity in ancient astronomy in different civilizations, for example, both the Sumerians and Chinese used Jupiter’s movement in deriving their zodiac of 12 constellations and used 360 degrees in describing the sky.  The author has further revealed Chinese zodiac has three phases based on ancient texts and precession, characterized by its starting constellation, Yin 寅Sagittarius at ca 5300BC, Chou 丑Capricornus at ca 3000BC and Zi 子Aquarius at ca 700BC which is still in use today in China. The Sumerians inherited the Chinese zodiac of the second phase Chou Capricornus at ca 3000BC, so did the ancient Indians and the Egyptians via their mutual trades with the Sumerians. Capricornus was used as a telling sign of planting millet during 4000BC-3000BC in the Yellow River downstream, Qian Niu牵牛as a bull being led for plowing the field, however, Sumerians changed the “bull” to Taurus as Sun in the Vernal Equinox, instead of Chinese in the Winter Solstice. The author has also made a breakthrough by determining ancient Chinese started their sexagesimal calendar in 5324BC and their first phase zodiac of 12 constellations known as Yin 寅Sagittarius was already in place then, based on ancient texts and Jupiter’s solar circle, an astonishing discovery which has also been independently verified by another astronomical event based on precession that Chinese started their Phase One zodiac around 5300BC. The author has further demonstrated Chinese used the Left Pivotal Star known as Lota-Draconis today as their North Star at 5000BC and the Right Pivotal Star known as alpha-Draconis as their North Star at 3000BC. Recent archeological findings indicate the People of East had observed the North Star at 4400BC. Chinese astronomy has always been under strict state supervision and, according to our findings revealed in this book, is the oldest known, two thousand years older than the Sumerians. These ancient People of East developed the earliest astronomy and invented the earliest calendar for one practical purpose, to determine the precise dates of their brief planting of millet, which occurs at the end of May and the beginning of June at the northern latitude of 36 degrees. This is the precise reason why the first civilization was born to farmers of millet, not to cultivators of barley, wheat, corn, or rice in warmer climates at lower latitudes.

This book presents outlines of History of Sciences in Ancient Egyptian Civilization. The late Egyptian and Greek sources praised the ancient Egyptian cultural centers as a source for knowledge and science, thus ancient Egypt was a source of inspiration for the legislator 'Solon', as well as 'Thales of Miletus' who was a mathematician and astronomer, where He learned and practiced the sciences of ancient Egypt, then taking this knowledge to the Greeks. The First Chapter provides 'The Historical Manifestations of Geometry and Mathematics in Ancient Egypt'. The Second Chapter provides 'The Historical Manifestations of Astrological Life in Ancient Egypt'. The Third Chapter provides 'The Historical Manifestations of Astronomical Life in Ancient Egypt'. The Addendum provides 'The Historical and Linguistic Identification and Treatment of Obsolete Units and Measures of Time in Ancient Egyptian Language and Synonyms'. All of these were divided to several sections and topics to serve the scientific methodologies in ancient Egyptian civilization which was absolutely precious.
