Academic Freedom

The university is often celebrated as a site for critique where intellectual
laborers, protected by academic freedom, may address the pressing social
issues of their time and thus contribute to public opinion and to the
advancement of knowledge. As the public university increasingly adopts
neoliberal practices, however, such as shifting its governing power to private funders and by emphasizing its marketable versus non-marketable benefits to wider society, critical university studies (CUS) argues that academic freedom—the bedrock of the U.S. university system—is under threat. This project contributes to CUS scholarship by examining how academics who are committed to advancing social justice and who actively engage with broad audiences, experience the protection of academic freedom while employed at U.S. public universities. Are faculty members who publicly critique systemic injustice protected by academic freedom? More specifically, using in-depth interviews, I inquire: 1) What are the motivations for, and experiences of scholars when exercising their academic freedom in politically controversial ways? 2) To what extent do economic, racial and gendered politics, as well as faculty members’ institutional status impact public universities’ commitment to academic freedom? I draw on 31 in-depth interviews with publicly-engaged
scholars from three Research One public universities who reflect a diverse range of academic ranks and disciplines as well as racial and gender positionalities in order to better understand what it is like for those who consistently take stands on controversial political issues. This project reveals that, in general, academic freedom is a stratified freedom drawn across academic-rank lines, reflecting the racial and gender hierarchies of larger society. This research argues that while the culture of the academy encourages conformity rather than ethical risk-taking, the university is still a space of edifying possibilities. By examining the effectiveness of academic freedom and the commendable dissidence of activistscholars, this dissertation aims to contribute to higher education accountability
efforts that seek to reinforce the academy’s connection to, and responsibility for the public that it is tasked to serve.

These poems, composed in Somali and in English, provide a poetic reflection of the recently emerged debate on the theme of Caddaan Studies which means "White Studies". The criticism and counter-criticism contained in the debate dug so deep into life nerve of Somali Studies that over a thousand people participated. The poems, under the title "Inaugurating Caddaan Studies" were composed with a critical observation of the debate.

This book presents a theologically-grounded understanding of academic freedom that builds on, completes, and transforms the prevailing secular understanding. Academic freedom in the secular university, while rightly protecting scholars from external interference by ecclesiastical and political authorities, is constricting in practice because it tends to prohibit most scholars from exploring the relation of the finite world to the infinite, or God. In the Catholic university, true academic freedom means both the freedom of the scholar to pursue studies unencumbered by external interference, and freedom to pursue knowledge beyond the boundaries of specific academic disciplines toward an infinite horizon.

Speech at Australian universities is restricted in various ways. A few of them, such as student protests against visiting speakers, receive lots of attention. Others seldom do, such as defamation threats and cyber harassment. Self-censorship may be more significant than overt censorship. Those who want to raise awareness of hidden limitations on speech can learn from the methods used to raise the alarm about student protests.

Academic freedom is considered to be one of the most important pillars of educational institutions. It is a prerequisite for quality education, essential for complete development of human  personality. However, it has been subjected to constant restraint from both governmental and non-governmental entities. Further, violation of academic freedom also leads to breach of other human rights.

The University of Puerto Rico, the island's sole public university, faces what is probably the most critical juncture in its history. The draconian budget cuts that have already almost tripled tuition and will slash the institution's budget in half by the fall of 2021 threaten to drastically shrink or even dismember the system in ways that could make its academic and social missions nearly impossible. This article argues that the damage to the university has serious implications for academic freedom and threatens Puerto Rico's recovery and well-being. We also describe resistance efforts, focusing on the work of a commission including student and faculty representatives that produced a bill currently under consideration by Puerto Rico's Senate. The authors thank members of the APPU, PROTESTAmos, and the CMRU for sharing information that contributed to the preparation of this article and for everything they do to defend Puerto Rico's public university.

In various debates about science, appeal is made to the freedom of scientific research. A rationale in favor of this freedom is rarely offered. In this paper, two major arguments are reconstructed that promise to lend support to a principle of scientific freedom. According to the epistemological argument, freedom of research is required in order to organize the collective cognitive effort we call science efficiently. According to the political argument, scientific knowledge needs to be generated in ways that are indepen- dent of the major political powers because of the important role it plays for the citizens and their capacity to form well informed political preferences. Both arguments are examined critically in order to identify their strengths and limitations. I argue that the scientific freedom established by both rests on a number of critical preconditions, and that the arguments’ force must be weighed against competing societal inter- ests and values in each case of their application. Appeal to a principle of scientific freedom should there- fore never mark the end, but rather the beginning of a public debate about the ends and means of science.

This paper starts by defining the social enterprise sector, its history, and its current size and scope in the UK. This is followed by a discussion on the distinct legal structures available for social enterprises, and how these determine their identity and brand. The second half of the paper focuses on the potential for the emergence of socio-ecological enterprises out of university-led research, and presents a business plan which will be incorporated into upcoming  research projects

The overall purpose of this study is to explore human rights ramifications in the recent context of Turkey, the forced migration journeys of intellectuals from the country after the failed coup attempt in 2016, their experiences of seeking legal status, and other immigration issues in Europe and the USA focusing on integration and adaptation issues. As a qualitative research conducted through interviews, this paper analyzes implementation of international human rights laws in Turkey by scrutinizing the political practices and their influences on the targeted individuals/groups particularly after the 2016 coup attempt. The findings in this paper will help researchers studying this specific era in Turkey’s historical context in terms of human rights obtain a comprehensive insight through lived and shared experiences of persecuted people.

This study of how higher education leaders see the free speech phenomenon, i.e.,
how they are experiencing and responding to free speech issues is significant because
universities, perhaps more than any other democracy’s institutions, are considered to
have a special responsibility for safeguarding democratic values, such as free speech.
The leaders of universities set the tone for the institution. Thus, the primary research
question guiding this study was: How are higher education leaders experiencing and
responding to free speech issues? From an empirical perspective, the study is about how
leaders in higher education perceive the issue of free speech on their campuses,
particularly how they are experiencing it and how they are responding. Nearly all the
leaders claim to support free speech, yet, when an incident involving a free speech issue
arises on campus, many leaders back down to public pressure against it. The study
attempted to discover if the leader’s political ideology and leadership position affect how
higher education leaders experience free speech and how they respond. This study
resulted in four major findings: (1) Higher education leaders believe a university should
have a free and open discourse for faculty and students; (2) There was disagreement on
the limits, if any, that should be imposed on speech; (3) During the interviews, no higher
education leader categorically expressed the origin of free speech as delineated in the founding documents of the United States, mainly the Declaration of Independence; and
(4) Terms like free speech, diversity, inclusion, and equity need concise clarification to
avoid confusion and the fear of “cancel culture.”

The article discusses several arguments offered as justification for academic freedom. It identifies four main arguments, three consequentialist in nature, the other nonconsequentialist. It explores the form these arguments must take in order to establish academic freedom as a principle distinct from free speech and intellectual freedom.

Η ρητορική της κυβέρνησης περί του θέματος απλώς αναπαράγει τα πάγια εδώ και δεκαετίες χονδροειδή προπαγανδιστικά στερεότυπα, ιδεολογήματα και δόγματα της αγοραίας νεοφιλελεύθερης «δημοσιογραφίας/δημοσιολογίας». Στερεότυπα που έχουν δημιουργήσει στο πιο επιρρεπές προς χειραγώγηση κοινό ένα φράγμα πρόσληψης σε επίπεδο εξαρτημένων αντανακλαστικών. Το φράγμα αυτό αποτρέπει και ακυρώνει εκ προοιμίου κάθε ορθολογική πραγμάτευση του θέματος, κάθε επιστημονικά τεκμηριωμένη προσέγγιση. Η κυβέρνηση επιλέγει σκοπίμως αυτή τη λαθροχειρία-απάτη, ώστε να επιβάλλει αυταρχικά  και εσπευσμένα (για να αποφύγει θύελλα κινητοποιήσεων με ανοικτά τα ΑΕΙ) νέο κύκλο αντιδραστικών αντιμεταρρυθμίσεων στην παιδεία και στην κοινωνία, με το φωτοστέφανο του «σωτήρα», που «ξέρει να κυβερνά με πυγμή» και να «αποκαθιστά την τάξη και την ηθική»…
Πρόκειται για αριστοτεχνικά καλοστημένη στον πρωτογονισμό της παγίδα-βρόγχο, όπου: από τη μια μεριά υπάρχει η τάξη, ο νόμος, όπως σε κάθε «δυτικό πολιτισμένο κράτος», από την άλλη – η «ανομία», η «παραβατικότητα», το «παραεμπόριο», η «διακίνηση ναρκωτικών», το «έγκλημα», οι «μπαχαλάκηδες», κ.λπ.
Ουδόλως απασχολεί τους αυτουργούς αυτής της παγίδας και τα θύματά της το εξωπραγματικό της διατύπωσης και ο προφανής παραλογισμός της. Οι ισχυρισμοί αυτού του πρωτογονισμού είναι ακόμα πιο άθλιοι από το να διατείνεται κανείς ότι η άρση του ασύλου της κατοικίας, του οικογενειακού ασύλου (άρθρο 9 του Συντάγματος) θα εξαλείψει τα περιστατικά ενδοοικογενειακής βίας!
Από πού απορρέει ότι τα ΑΕΙ είναι «εστίες παραβατικότητας» σε μια κοινωνία παράδεισο μιας ευνομούμενης πολιτείας; Τι εμποδίζει με το υφιστάμενο θεσμικό πλαίσιο την καταπολέμηση έκνομων ενεργειών του κοινού ποινικού δικαίου σε πανεπιστημιακούς χώρους; Από ποιον ελέγχεται π.χ. και από ποιον εξωθείται εν μέρει η διακίνηση ναρκωτικών προς ορισμένους χώρους; Έχει άραγε η διακίνηση φορτίων ναρκωτικών με πλοία σχέση με ΑΕΙ, ή με πλοιοκτήτες και κατόχους πληθώρας ΜΜΕ, φίλα προσκείμενους στην εξουσία (που κατά περίεργο τρόπο είναι εκ προοιμίου και αναφανδόν «αθώοι»); Τι γίνεται με την ιδιότυπη ασυλία (θεσμική ή/και εθιμική) της οποίας χαίρουν μεγαλοσχήμονες που εμπλέκονται σε σκάνδαλα διαφθοράς, οικονομικά και άλλα εγκλήματα; Τι γίνεται με το αέναο παίγνιο εκείνου του είδους «μπαχαλάκηδων»-προβοκατόρων, ευρισκόμενων κατά τεκμήριο σε εντεταλμένη υπηρεσία, στην πλάτη των λαϊκών κινητοποιήσεων και του πανεπιστημίου; Τι θέση έχουν άραγε οι πανεπιστημιακοί χώροι στη συνολική χωροταξία και ανθρωπογεωγραφία του εγκλήματος; Ποιος ασχολείται με τη συστηματική και κατά συρροήν παραβίαση του άρθρου 16 του Συντάγματος, με την εισβολή επιχειρηματικών ομίλων και συμφερόντων στα ΑΕΙ, με βαθμιαία μετάλλαξη στην κατεύθυνση του «επιχειρηματικού πανεπιστημίου» ή/και του «πανεπιστήμιου-επιχείρησης»; Με τις καθεστωτικές φοιτητικές παρατάξεις που λειτουργούν ως παραμάγαζα σταδιοδρομίας (διανομή σημειώσεων, χρέη γραμματείας, εμπλοκή σε αντιγραφές, προθάλαμος για μεταπτυχιακά, διδακτορικά κ.λπ.); Με την υπερεκμετάλλευση απλήρωτης εργασίας, φοιτητών, προπτυχιακών, υποψηφίων διδακτόρων, προσωπικού και υποδομών από καθηγητές-επιχειρηματίες; Με τις διώξεις κατά μελών της πανεπιστημιακής κοινότητας για τις ιδέες και την επιστημονική τους έρευνα; Ποιον απασχολεί η χρονίζουσα και ιδιαίτερα έντονη κατά την τελευταία δεκαετία της κρίσης χρέους εγκληματική υποχρηματοδότηση και υποστελέχωση των ΑΕΙ , η αρπαγή των αποθεματικών τους με το διαβόητο PSI; Λύθηκε άραγε το πρόβλημα της μαζικής και χρόνιας ανεργίας των νέων, ιδιαίτερα οξύ μεταξύ των αποφοίτων ΑΕΙ; Το πρόβλημα της υποαπασχόλησης, της επισφαλούς εργασίας/μερικής απασχόλησης με μισθούς πείνας και μπλοκάκι; Το πρόβλημα της μαζικής μετανάστευσης νεολαίας που έχει αποκτήσει δημογραφικές διαστάσεις μαζικής γενοκτονίας; Το πρόβλημα της ελάχιστης έως ανύπαρκτης φοιτητικής μέριμνας (σίτισης, στέγασης κ.λπ.);  Και άλλα πολλά…
Το ίδιο το πανεπιστήμιο ως θεσμός, είναι γέννημα και συστατικό στοιχείο συγκεκριμένου ιστορικά τύπου του κοινωνικού καταμερισμού της εργασίας και ειδικότερα, του ανταγωνιστικού τύπου καταμερισμού μεταξύ φυσικής και διανοητικής εργασίας. Αντανακλά αυτόν τον καταμερισμό, ενώ ταυτόχρονα, συνιστά και όρο αναπαραγωγής ή/και περαιτέρω ανάπτυξής του. Με αυτό τον τρόπο, αντανακλά  και αναπαράγει την εκάστοτε ιστορικά διαμορφωμένη θέση και το ρόλο των επιστημών (βασικών, εφαρμοσμένων και τεχνολογικών) και των τεχνών στην παραγωγή και ευρύτερα στην κοινωνία, στον πολιτισμό, ενώ έχει προνομιακή συμβολή και στη διαμόρφωση του φάσματος δυνατοτήτων περαιτέρω ανάπτυξης της παραγωγής και συνολικά της κοινωνίας, του πολιτισμού μέσω της επιστήμης και των τεχνών. Για αυτό το λόγο, το σύνολο της παιδείας και ειδικότερα το πανεπιστήμιο διαδραματίζει στρατηγικό ρόλο στη συγκρότηση και ανάπτυξη της κοινωνίας.
Η ακόμα πιο άμεση υπαγωγή επιστήμης και παιδείας στο κεφάλαιο επιτυγχάνεται μόνο μέσα από συστηματική υπονόμευση και αποδόμηση των τελευταίων. Καταλυτικές είναι σε αυτή την κατεύθυνση οι αλλαγές που επιβάλλονται από υπερεθνικά όργανα τις τελευταίες δεκαετίες (Ενιαίος Ευρωπαϊκός Χώρος Έρευνας και Εκπαίδευσης, διαδικασία της Μπολόνια, υπαγωγή στο τρίπτυχο: επιχειρηματικότητα, ανταγωνιστικότητα, «αριστεία», επιβολή της αγοραίας αξιολόγησης κ.λπ.). Σε αυτές της συνθήκες η πανεπιστημιακή παιδεία υποβαθμίζεται σε μια διαδικασία μαθητείας-τιθάσευσης σε όρους εκτελεστικότητας, η βασική επιστημονική έρευνα (στην οποία περιλαμβάνεται η φιλοσοφία και οι κοινωνικές-ανθρωπιστικές επιστήμες) υποβαθμίζεται ή/και τίθεται υπό διωγμό ως «ασύμφορη» και «άχρηστη», ενώ προτάσσεται η εφαρμοσμένη και τεχνική/τεχνολογική με άμεση κερδώα διέξοδο, τα επιστημονικά γνωστικά αντικείμενα συρρικνώνονται σε πακέτα πληροφορίας και μετρήσιμων δεξιοτήτων με ημερομηνία λήξης κ.ο.κ. Επιτυχημένος επιστήμονας δεν είναι πλέον αυτός που επιδίδεται ανιδιοτελώς σε έρευνα ανοίγοντας δρόμους για την ανθρωπότητα, αλλά ο έχων επιδόσεις στην επιχειρηματική αξιοποίηση επιστήμης και πανεπιστημίου, ο προγραμματοθήρας, ο επιχειρηματίας εργολάβος/εργοδότης που εκμεταλλεύεται ασυστόλως υποδομές, διασυνδέσεις και εργασία μελών της πανεπιστημιακής κοινότητας…
Η έρευνα, η τεχνολογία και η παιδεία, είναι ως προς την ουσία τους ζωτικής στρατηγικής σημασίας καθολικές πανανθρώπινες δυνάμεις, οι τύχες των οποίων δεν μπορούν να αφεθούν ως έρμαια του αγοραίου και προοπτικά καταστροφικού καιροσκοπισμού των όποιων ιδιωτικών συμφερόντων του κεφαλαίου.

population, les artistes sont encouragés à converger
vers les universités pour participer à la fondation d’un
nouveau rêve américain, porté par la recherche.
Revenant sur ce projet politique méconnu, L’Artistechercheur
retrace l’émergence d’une figure de l’artiste
dont l’activité bascule soudainement dans le champ
universitaire.
Pour comprendre cette mutation, Sandra Delacourt
suit la trace de Donald Judd, artiste minimaliste, qui
dans la deuxième partie du XXe siècle fut désigné
ambassadeur d’un « art éduqué ». À travers lui,
l’auteure nous invite à suivre l’évolution, non linéaire,
d’un nouvel imaginaire pour l’art et pour la recherche,
et expose la manière dont différentes générations
d’artistes s’en sont emparées ou l’ont rejeté.
Alors que depuis quelques années la recherche
créative fait l’objet d’un nouvel engouement, cet
ouvrage propose d’explorer les désirs antagonistes qui
ont conduit l’art et le savoir à pointer un horizon
commun.

After Nancy Richardson was fired from her job as Dean of Students at Boston University School of Theology, she sued the university for violating her free speech rights under Massachusetts' equal employment law. Richardson had protested what she believed were discriminatory decisions not to hire qualified female and Black candidates for the faculty. The ensuing trial brought out the entrenched nature of white male privilege at BU and especially its famous School of Theology - alma mater of Martin Luther King, Jr. And it opened up the whole debate about who defines qualifications for academic jobs.

The standard view of academic freedom and free speech is that they play complementary roles in universities. Academic freedom protects academic discourse, while other public discourse in universities is protected by free speech. Here I challenge this view, broadly, on the grounds that free speech in universities sometimes undermines academic practices. One defence of the standard view, in the face of this worry, says that campus free speech actually furthers the university's academic aims. Another says that universities have a secondary democratic function, which cannot be fulfilled without free speech on campus. I identify shortcomings in both types of arguments.

Az Akadémia egy hierarchikus, az irányítást te-kintve hivatalként mûködô intézmény, Ön pedig egy kritikai gondolkodású, az uralkodó narra tí vá-kat megkérdôjelezô mûvészettörténész. Mégis 12 éve vezeti az MTA Mûvészeti Gyûjteményét. Ho-gyan találtak egymásra ezzel az intézménnyel, és mennyire értik egymás nyelvét?-Az Akadémia egy dzsungel, saját törvények-kel. Ha nem meghódítani akarod, hanem élni benne, vele, akkor lassan megnyílnak elôtted a túl-élés ösvényei. Székely Bertalan-kutatóként kezd-tem a gyûjteménnyel ismerkedni, majd 2007-ben egyik napról a másikra vettem át a gyûj teményt, amikor az addigi vezetô, András Edit hirtelen Amerikába távozott. Valakinek gondoznia kellett a gyûjteményt, intézni a napi fenntartást, kölcsönzé-seket; kinyitni nyitvatartási idôben-de azt hiszem, senki sem gondolta, hogy ezen kívül egyéb feladatom is lehet. A Mûvészeti Gyûjtemény ugyanis különösebben nem érdekelt eddig senkit az Akadémián. Nekem viszont jó búvóhelynek és kimeríthetetlen inspirációforrásnak bizonyult.-Búvóhelynek? Miért?-Felmértem, hogy számomra más intézmény-ben nem nyílna tér. Magyarországon az elmúlt évtizedekben ugyanis folyamatosan épült le a tu-do mányos kutatás a múzeumokon belül; a kri-tikai szemléletû kutatókat pedig kevés kivételtôl eltekintve, a pálya szélére állították; és a kiállítá-sokat ma már egyre kevésbé rendezik muzeoló-gusok. Az Akadémián viszont rengeteg érdekes tárgy vesz körül, és mivel a gyûjtemény gyakor-latilag láthatatlan, nem kell a mainstreamhez iga-zodnom. Persze az elején nagyon nehéznek érez-tem: egyedül voltam egy bürokratikus mamutin-tézményben, amely nehezen érti, valójában mi az a mûvészet, vagy mi az az át ha gyo mányozás, " Ilyen hely nincs még egy a világon" Tárgyak élete az MTA Mûvészeti Gyûjteményében A Magyar Tudományos Akadémiához az alapítása óta mûtárgyak sokasága tartozik. Ezeknek a festmények-nek, szobroknak és más tárgyaknak megvan a maguk kalandos sorsa, de meglepôen pontosan mesélik el a magyar tudományosság és a mindenkori nemzeti kánon történetét is. Aki meghallgat egy tárlatvezetést az Akadémia ma látogatható termeiben, nem csupán tudósportrékat fog látni, hanem a máig tartó történelmünkre is rápillanthat. A "történelem" szó 19. századi megalkotójának, Döbrentei Gábornak az arcképét nézve például rögtön megelevenedik az 1950-es évek eleje is, amikor a Döbrenteit tévesen Döbröginek vélô fegyveresek "bosszúból" feldarabolták a festményt. De az efféle erôsza-kos beavatkozások mellett láthatatlan erôk is formálták az Akadémia tárgyi emlékezetét, a kiemelésektôl az elsüllyesztésig. A ma az Akadémián megtekinthetô képmásokon kívül számtalan mûtárgy rejtôzik még a székházban és a nemrégiben lecsatolt kutatóhálózatban, és velük együtt megannyi történet vár felfedezésre. El trabajo aborda las violaciones al Derecho internacional en Palestina a través de las categorías jurídicas de ocupación, colonialismo y apartheid. Analiza al movimiento BDS (Boicot, Desinversión y Sanciones contra el Estado de Israel) en tanto respuesta a dichas violaciones al Derecho internacional y propone entenderlo como la forma de protestar de la sociedad civil palestina.

Whether it is backlash from the publication of controversial papers or calls for no-platforming, the question of freedom of expression in academia seems to be more pertinent than ever. The conflict here seems to then be one of freedom and responsibility: Freedom to engage in new and perhaps contrary ideas and responsibility to those whom these ideas impact. I address these themes by analyzing recent paper, by Emily Chamlee-Wright that questions when it might be appropriate to resist pressure from the status quo and speak despite the potential for negative feedback.  I wish to supplement her account with the need to temper this question of appropriate deference with one of social responsibility. Like Chamlee-Wright, I argue that these have “both positive and negative effects on the quality of public and academic discourse”, but for different reasons. Stereotype and bias inherent in some speech and scholarship may harm the discursive environment and encourage self-censorship as well. These expanded threats in turn require a different solution that would urge deference when scholarship pertains to and impacts certain marginalized identity categories. Self-Censorship does not necessarily mean a lowered quality academic or public discourse, but a necessary element in balancing the concerns of power and perspective.

Returning to the work begun in Amy Richlin's seminal essay on the unsettling topic of sexual violence in Ovid's work, "Reading Ovid's Rapes," this paper takes another look at the rich interpretive problems posed by the incessantly recurring theme of sexual violence in the "Metamorphoses." Though the perpetrators are almost exclusively divine, roughly a third of the myths recounted by the Roman poet features some form of sexual assault. When read in the context of conservative Augustan-era marriage legislation like the "Lex Julia de adulteriis," Ovid's insistence on the theme can be read as an indictment of Augustus himself, who after all insisted on likening himself in official imperial iconography to the cult of such gods as Apollo and Jupiter, two of the most egregious assailants throughout the long poem. However, each reiteration of the theme also reveals a series of other important concomitant concerns that arise from cases of sexual violence, including questions pertaining to illegitimate children and other unanticipated repercussions in the victim's family, that actually reveal Ovid to be more seriously engaged in thinking about the subject than he is commonly given credit for. Taking Ovid to task for the grave issues he tackles can actually provide fodder for productive discussion of topical issues effecting life on campus and in our country today. It is absolutely imperative that certain topics be addressed in productive and adult ways with our students if we expect to raise the level of our public discourse. Far from aestheticizing these topics as mere literary artifacts, Ovid's complex text demands to be read on a number of levels that are all pertinent to the world in which we live today.

The Japanese government is taking off the gloves with academics who research, write, and talk about sordid or awkward aspects of Japan’s twentieth-century history. This campaign ranges from harassment and intimidation to legal action in support of a sanitized past. In conversations with dozens of academics from around the world between 2016 and 2018, I found a consensus that the situation has worsened considerably and that this is counter- productive, undermining “Brand Japan” by showing the world a glowering nationalism. Governments around the world are not keen to endure their critics, but in Japanese studies what had been sporadic and episodic has become more systematic and intrusive on Prime Minister Abe Shinzo’s watch.

The paper argues that the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) is currently experiencing a crisis of academic freedom and discusses the need to chart a course out of this crisis. The paper claims that the crisis, with its two dimensions (intellectual and empiric), is specific to Europe/EHEA; it is not a global or national crisis, although there are challenges to academic freedom in all other parts of the world and also within individual national higher education systems in Europe. Efforts have been started recently to address key challenges to academic freedom in the EHEA and eventually plot a course out of this crisis. The paper outlines how a comparative and applied interdisciplinary study of these efforts helps reveal their nature and scope, identify the actors/stakeholders involved as well as those, astoundingly, absent; it also allows to discuss and assess early on the chances of success and identify challenges and gaps in these efforts.
