This paper argues that the Nordic boatbuilding tradition and the use of sail in Scandinavia can be traced back to the Early Bronze Age when it developed in response to emerging chiefdoms and an associated need for long-distance trade in bronze metals. The southern Scandinavian boat imagery dated to the Bronze Age (BA) depicts different types of boats and means of propulsion, including large vessels and the use of sail. This paper focuses on crewlines on such imagery as indicative of boat length in relation to both the 350 BC Hjortspring boat, a BA type boat and the width-to-length ratio of BA ship-settings. This comparison suggests the BA boat imagery and ship-settings depict the same type of plank-built vessels and that the BA ship-settings are likely to represent 'real' vessels. Centrally positioned post holes in four of these ship-settings are therefore likely to represent masts, providing a direct link with mast-like features also present in the rock art boat imagery. Available BA boatbuilding technologies, based on analysis of the Hjortspring boat, and other indirect evidence of BA boatbuilding technologies, suggests that large, sailed vessels most likely existed, propelled in combination with mainly paddling.
Naz Defne Kut, "On the Other Hand: The Battle of Lepanto in the Ottoman Sources", Images in the Borderlands: Mediterranean between Christian and Muslim Worlds in the Early Modern Period, (ed. by Ivana Čapeta Rakić and Giuseppe Capriotti), Brepols Publishers, 2022, pp. 181-194. , 2022
In this study, Naz Defne Kut deals with the Ottoman perspective of the Battle of Lepanto through Ottoman sources and she presents how the Ottoman court, chroniclers and other contemporaries of the battle have reflected on and narrated the ‘Lepanto defeat’. As the scholar emphasizes, in contrast to the literary, artistic and religious reflections of the 'Lepanto victory' in Europe, the Sublime Porte minimized the dimensions of the defeat in their official reactions and considered it as a negligible misfortune, yet its devastating effects are notable in the narratives of contemporary Ottoman chroniclers. While the historiographical documentation and visual representations of the Ottoman victories, such as the conquest of Preveza (1538) and the conquest of Cyprus (1571), are traditionally abundant in the sixteenth-century Ottoman literary and visual accounts, the literature on the Battle of Lepanto is scarce. Furthermore, the visual representations of Lepanto as a locality, such as miniature paintings or the portolan charts, are mostly limited to the works of the pre-1571 era. - Please note this article is published with Brepols Publishers as a Gold Open Access article under a Creative Commons CC 4.0: BY-NC license. Internet of Things (IoT) is a substantial concept of a new technology generation. It is a vision that permits the sensors or embedded devices to be interconnected over the Internet. The upcoming IoT will be greatly presented by the enormous quantity of heterogeneous networked embedded devices that generate intensively "Big data". Enormously a large amount of data is being collected today by many organizations and in a continuous raise. It turns out to be computationally inefficient to analyze such a massive data. The quantity of the available raw data has been expanding on an exponential scale. In a massive database, the valuable information is hidden. The new developed Big data techniques can handle many challenges that face data analysis and have the ability to extract valuable information. This survey shows the study of IoT and Big data. The survey discusses Big data on IoT and how it is created. Many IoT existing, future application and a variety of IoT technologies whether wired or wireless are viewed. Challenges and techniques that solve these issues are discussed and the architecture of IoT is observed.
