When he was in middle school, Todd Eisenstadt’s mother, Pauline, allowed him to stay up some evenings to watch “Nightline,” ABC’s late-night news program featuring anchor Ted Koppel.

“She would do that when there was a topic on the show she wanted to discuss with me at breakfast,” said Todd, now 58 and a professor of political science at American University in Washington, D.C.
