The preface to the 1st edition, published under title "Memoirs of a cavalier" (London [1720]) states that the "Memoirs" had been found "in the closet of an eminent publick minister" and were probably written by a "gentleman of quality." The publisher of the 2d edition (Leeds, J. Lister, n.d.) ascribes the authorship to Andrew Newport. It has also been ascribed to Robert Harley. cf. Dict. nat. biog
