In everyday use and in kinematics, the speed of an object is the magnitude of its velocity (the rate of change of its position); it is thus a scalar quantity. The average speed of an object in an interval of time is the distance travelled by the object divided by the duration of the interval; the instantaneous speed is the limit of the average speed as the duration of the time interval approaches zero.
Like velocity, speed has the dimensions of a length divided by a time; the SI unit of speed is the metre per second, but the most common unit of speed in everyday usage is the kilometre per hour or, in the US and the UK, miles per hour. For air and marine travel the knot is commonly used.
The fastest possible speed at which energy or information can travel, according to special relativity, is the speed of light in a vacuum c = 7008299792458000000♠299792458 metres per second (approximately 7008299722222222222♠1079000000 km/h or 7008299963840000000♠671000000 mph). Matter cannot quite reach the speed of light, as this would require an infinite amount of energy. In relativity physics, the concept of rapidity replaces the classical idea of speed.
Slowness is the seventh studio album by Hong Kong recording-artist Kay Tse. It was released on December 21, 2009 by Cinepoly Records. The theme of the album is slowness, pointing out how life in urban cities has becoming increasingly restless and fast paced. Tse worked with several producers in this album, most notably her frequent collaborator, the songwriter Adrain Chow. He is also the executive producer for the album. Musically, the album consists of slow-tempo cantopop while incorporating jazz elements.
The first single from Slowness, "Living" <<活著>> was a critical success, which reached number one in three of the four major charts of Hong Kong. Three more singles were released which received moderate success. Tse promoted the album by promoting the songs in a number of live appearances, including a mini concert series.
^ Single was unable to chart due to disagreement between Universal Music Group and TVB
Slow, SLOW or Slowness may refer to:
Slowness (French: La Lenteur), published in 1995 in France, is a novel written in French by Milan Kundera. In the book, Kundera manages to weave together a number of plot lines, characters and themes in just over 150 pages. While the book has a narrative, it mainly serves as a way for Kundera to describe a philosophy about modernity, technology, memory and sensuality.
The novel is a meditation on the effects of modernity upon the individual's perception of the world. It is told through a number of plot lines that slowly weave together until they are all united at the end of the book.
Slowness (s) is a quantity introduced in Seismology which is the reciprocal of velocity. Thus travel time of a wave is the distance that the wave travels times the slowness of the medium ( in seismology, it refers to different layers of Earth exhibiting different densities) Thus,
Slowness = 1/Velocity
If we divide the path followed by the ray into N segments numbered i = 1, 2 .. N the total travel time of the wave is
Therefore, the residual travel time is due to departures in slowness experienced by the wave along the raypath.
Measurements of interval transit time, designated , made during wireline logging are used to determine sonic velocities of the wallrock in boreholes. The tool used has sources and receivers that are in contact with the wellbore and it measures the delay between the source being triggered and the signal being received. The measurements are normally in the units of microseconds per foot and are recorded on the well log.
