Asymmetry is the absence of, or a violation of, symmetry (the property of an object being invariant to a transformation, such as reflection). Symmetry is an important property of both physical and abstract systems and it may be displayed in precise terms or in more aesthetic terms. The absence of violation of symmetry that are either expected or desired can have important consequences for a system.
Due to how cells divide in organisms, asymmetry in organisms is fairly usual in at least one dimension, with biological symmetry also being common in at least one dimension.
Louis Pasteur proposed that biological molecules are asymmetric because the cosmic [i.e. physical] forces that preside over their formation are themselves asymmetric. While at his time, and even now, the symmetry of physical processes are highlighted, it is known that there are fundamental physical asymmetries, starting with time.
Asymmetry is an important and widespread trait, having evolved numerous times in many organisms and at many levels of organisation (ranging from individual cells, through organs, to entire body-shapes). Benefits of asymmetry sometimes have to do with improved spatial arrangements, such as the left human lung being smaller, and having one fewer lobes than the right lung to make room for the asymmetrical heart. In other examples, division of function between the right and left half may have been beneficial and has driven the asymmetry to become stronger. Such an explanation is usually given for mammal hand or paw preference (Handedness), an asymmetry in skill development in mammals. Training the neural pathways in a skill with one hand (or paw) may take less effort than doing the same with both hands.
Asymmetry is the second album by British rock band Mallory Knox. It was released on 27 October 2014 via Search and Destroy and Epic Records and was produced by Gil Norton. It is the band's first release after departing from A Wolf At Your Door Records.
Asymmetry charted at no. 16 in the UK album charts in the first week of sales. Like their debut album, it was released to very high positive reviews from music critics.
[W]e've been through lots personally, deteriorating relationships, keeping up friendships, how hard that can be when you're away. So to me, the title says we're still the same people, but our circumstances are completely different.
The band signed to a major label and received "all the ability that gives you when it comes to writing and recording", according to vocalist Mikey Chapman. Despite having waited a year before releasing Signals, the group did not write any new material. When the band began writing new compositions they were stuck writing unsatisfactory material for a few months. Eventually, the group "got into this rhythm", according to bassist Sam Douglas and wrote the album in a month. A few parts that did not make it on to Signals was used for Asymmetry. Half of the lyrics were written by Douglas, and the other half by Chapman. Douglas mentioned that the lyrics were about "love and loss", while Chapman said the lyrics were "a lot more direct this time."
Asymmetry is the third studio album by Australian progressive rock band Karnivool. It is their first release in over four years, since Sound Awake (2009). It was released on 19 July 2013. The album's first single, "We Are", was released, along with an accompanying music video, released on 14 June 2013.
After extensive worldwide touring in support of their second album, Sound Awake, Karnivool took a break in 2010 so that vocalist Ian Kenny could work with his other band, Birds of Tokyo. The band would reconvene in 2011, when they would alternate between working on writing new music and performing on their "Melodias Frescas" tour through Australia. The band wrote the album over a two year span, and then recorded it over a three month span. The band worked with American music producer Nick DiDia. Drew Goddard said about the album title: "Asymmetry to me is about two sides of the coin and the beauty in imperfection. Also about seeing beyond duality".
A journey thru the cold breath of time
searching the insanity of mine
mourning as I dwell among no laughter
hoping my existance ends hereafter
Astray the bridge I burned
to where sorrows fade
this torment now I earned
Emptiness is character of my destiny
my soul is drained and nowhere is
where I will be
Shadows... Of starlike blackened fire
taking... This soul to its loathsome trial
Thru astral layers the voyage goes on
perished among the stars
forever to be gone
to where nothing is and nothing was
...and their whispers greet my loss
In the watery mirror of destiny
I can not see my own reflection
thru the dead halls of infinity
I hear them sing for me
