Arika Takarano Mikiya Katakura |
Ali Project (typeset as ALI PROJECT) is a Japanese band with a strong Japanese Aristocrat-style image, consisting of Arika Takarano (宝野アリカ Takarano Arika , vocals & lyrics) and Mikiya Katakura (片倉三起也 Katakura Mikiya , music & arrangement).
In the band's earlier days, their musical style tended towards light, cheerful and/or refreshing songs. However, the sound has changed in recent times to take on a darker and more mysterious tone. Takarano Arika, lead singer/lyricist, has termed this change as a transition from White Alice (白アリ Shiro Ari ) to Black Alice (黒アリ Kuro Ari )[citation needed]. Though there has been a general shift towards performing songs in the "Black Alice" phase, Ali Project has occasionally sung in the White Alice style as well.

They made their indie debut in the charts in 1988 as Ari (Ant) Project (蟻プロジェクト Ari Purojekuto ) with their album "Fantastic Garden" (幻想庭園 Gensō Teien ). The album was later included in Tatsumi Takayuki's book Philosophy of Progressive Rock (プログレッシヴ・ロックの哲学 Puroguresshivu Rokku no Tetsugaku ), which led to the band being classified under the progressive rock genre.
Four years later in 1992 they changed their name and made their major debut with their single "Fall in love, maiden" (恋せよ乙女 Koi-seyo otome ).
Most of their records are released by Toshiba-EMI, Victor Entertainment and Tokuma Japan. The band is notable in the anime community for having their songs featured in several anime sequences, most notably in the series Noir, Rozen Maiden, Kamichama Karin, .hack//Roots, Linebarrels of Iron, Code Geass, Fate/Extra and most recently Another. Additionally, Mikiya Katakura has also provided the soundtrack to several anime series, such as Kaibutsu Oujo and Avenger.
Although using flamboyant costumes on-stage and videos, Ali Project was never included into the visual-kei scene. However, during an interview for the V-Rock Festival 2011, they stated that they consider their style into this movement.
Ali Project played their debut concert in the United States at the 2008 Sakura-Con in Seattle, Washington[citation needed]. Reportedly, the band itself insisted on making their debut performance in North America at the convention[citation needed]. After the performance, there was a signature session where fans could personally talk to Arika Takarano and get her signature on CDs sold at the convention.

Ali (Arabic: علي, ʿAlī) is a male Arabic name derived from the Arabic root ʕ-l-w, which literally means "high" or "elevated". It is a common name in Arab countries and the rest of the Muslim world. Islamic traditional use of the name goes back to the Islamic leader Ali ibn Abi Talib but the name is identical in form and meaning to the Hebrew: עֵלִי , Eli, which goes back to the High Priest Eli in the biblical Books of Samuel.
The name Ali also arises in other traditions. Among English-speakers as short for male and female names starting with "Al-", or the Old Norse man's name Áli. It can also be an English nickname, as a shortened form of Alexandra, Alison, Alice, Alistair, or Alexander.
Ali is also a Finnish male given name, derived from Aleksanteri.
Cho Yong-Jin (Korean: 조용진), famously known as Ali (stylized as ALi), is a South Korean singer-songwriter famous for her work on Korean pop music in the early twenty-first century. Her stage name is a motif from Muhammad Ali. This is so that it can be engraved easily by the masses. Following her debut in 2009, she is primarily known for her strong vocals and her time as a contestant on the KBS program Immortal Songs 2.
Following her debut in 2009, she had already gained fame for her appearances on music shows, most notably Immortal Songs 2 on KBS2. She also worked as a professor in applied musical arts at the Seoul Technical Arts College.
ALi released her first album SOULri in December 2011 which was strangely two years after her official debut. One released track, "Na Young", garnered immediate controversy as its lyrics referenced a case of sexual assault that had been a very public case in South Korea, with many detractors criticizing the song to be insensitive to its subject. ALi would later address this controversy by revealing that she herself was a survivor of sexual assault.
