Æon Flux

Æon Flux /ˌiːɒn ˈflʌks/ is an avant-garde science fiction animated television series that aired on MTV in various forms throughout the 1990s, with film, comic book, and video game adaptations following thereafter. It premiered in 1991 on MTV's Liquid Television experimental animation show as a six-part serial of short films, followed in 1992 by five individual short episodes. In 1995, a season of ten half-hour episodes aired as a stand-alone series, rated TV-14.Æon Flux was created by Korean American animator Peter Chung (who also created the character designs for Phantom 2040, which used a similar animation style as Æon Flux).

The live action movie Æon Flux, loosely based upon the series and starring Charlize Theron, was released in theaters on December 2, 2005, preceded in November of that year by a tie-in video game of the same name based mostly on the movie but containing some elements of the original TV series.

The title is based on the Gnostic notion of an Æon – emanations of God – specifically the Valentinian notion of a syzygy, a sexually complementary pair of emanations, here the two main characters. The Gnostic influence is also present in the use of a demiurge in one episode.

Æon Flux (video game)

Æon Flux is the video game adaptation of the 2005 science fiction film of the same name, with elements of the Æon Flux cartoon series. The game was released in November 2005 in North America for PlayStation 2 and Xbox gaming consoles.

Plot

The game is set in the year 2415, after disease has wiped out the majority of the Earth's population except for one walled and protected city-state, Bregna. The city is ruled by the congress of scientists who discovered the vaccine for the disease. When Æon Flux, the player character and top operative in the underground "Monican" rebellion, is sent on a mission to kill a government leader (Trevor Goodchild) she uncovers a world of secrets which make her doubt her mission and question everything she thought she knew.

The game's storyline attempts to bridge the gap between the TV series and the film and tries to explain various discrepancies, such as the appearance of the jungle outside Bregna and the differences between the movie and TV series versions of Trevor Goodchild. However, much of the game's visuals and tone skew far more dramatically toward that of the film, supplemented by the fact that the look of Æon in the game is based almost entirely on Charlize Theron's film version, and the character is also voiced by her.

Æon Flux is a 2005 American science fiction spy action film directed by Karyn Kusama, written by Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi with music by Graeme Revell and produced by Gale Anne Hurd, David Gale, Gary Lucchesi and Greg Goodman. The film is a loose adaptation of the animated science fiction television series of the same name, which was created by animator Peter Chung. The film was co-produced by MTV Films, Lakeshore Entertainment, Babelsberg Film Studio and Valhalla Motion Pictures. It stars Charlize Theron as the title character, Marton Csokas, Jonny Lee Miller, Sophie Okonedo, Pete Postlethwaite and Frances McDormand. The film was released on December 2, 2005 by Paramount Pictures in the United States. The film was not positively received by critics. It was a box office failure, as it made $52.3 million in gross revenues, with a production budget of $65 million.

Plot

In 2011, a deadly pathogenic virus has killed 99% of the Earth's population, forcing the survivors to regroup and scatter across the Earth.
