Spyro the Dragon (character)

Spyro the Dragon is a title character and the protagonist of the Spyro series. He appears in Spyro the Dragon, "Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage!", The Legend of Spyro, and later became a part of the Skylanders series.

First introduced in the 1998 video game Spyro the Dragon, Spyro is a young, energetic, violet Dragon with orange medium-sized wings, large, curved horns (most of the time), a spiral-shaped spike on the tip of his tail, and spikes resembling a mohawk. He is noticeably smaller than most other dragons portrayed in the series; a characteristic that aids him in the first game. In the original series, most dragons are depicted as bipedal; however, Spyro is depicted as quadrupedal. In the newer series, his back-story was that two thieves were running through the dragon realms and the dragons stopped them. They had two eggs, and the dragons adopted them as their own. They later hatched into Spyro the Dragon and Sparx the Dragonfly. This Dragonfly is responsible for keeping Spyro alive and displaying his health.

Spiro is a surname with a variety of origins, as well as a given name among Greek-speaking populations, Albanians, Montenegrins, and the Christians of Lebanon.

As a Greek name, Spiro may also be spelled Spyro. It comes from the Greek Spiros/Spyros (Greek: Σπύρος), with a nominative final "s" that is usually dropped when Anglicised. It is a male given name fairly common in Greek-speaking population (Greece especially in Corfu whose patron saint is Saint Spyridon, in Cyprus, Greek diaspora) as well as among the Christians of Lebanon where it is a common first and last name. It is a shortened form of the archaic-sounding Spyridon (Σπυρίδων), which means in ancient Greek "basket used to carry seeds" (Σπυρί, grain, seed). The Greek diminutives for Spirydon is, Pipi (Πίπης ) and Pipeto (Πιπέτο).

Špiro is also a male Montenegrin name.

In Germany, the surname Spiro originated as a corruption of Speyer, the name of a town in the Rhineland. It is one of a number of Jewish surnames that originated this way, along with the better-known Shapiro.
