Zarex (Ζάρηξ) is the name of a hero of Ancient Greek mythology, son of Carystus or Carycus, grandson of Chiron. He is credited with having learned the music of Apollo, and having founded the town of Zarex in Laconia; he also had a heroon at Eleusis, next to that of Hippothoon. There also was a mountain on Euboea thought to be named after him. He married Rhoeo and adopted Anius, her son by Apollo.
Zarex was an American sweet drink concentrate. It is also spelled Za-Rex.
Zarex is a type of sweet fruit syrup that can either be mixed with water or soda water, poured over shaved ice, used in cupcakes, or poured into alcoholic beverages. The Northeast was especially fond of this sweet drink but eventually it lost its popularity until it ended up disappearing. However, two South Shore (Massachusetts) entrepreneurs are bringing Zarex, along with their zebra mascot, back to life with hopes of the drink rejuvenating success. The names of these two individuals are Sonny Dove and Joe Croce. Together they bought the rights and the recipe for the drink in 2010. Zarex has received orders from as far away as Alaska. Zarex customers are able to customize the new Zarex bottles for special occasions. The most popular customizations include holiday-themed labels for Valentine's Day.
It was manufactured by the One Pie Canning Company until summer 2008. Rights to the brand were purchased by ZaRex USA, LLC, which has resumed manufacture of several flavors, in a growing number of Massachusetts stores and via their website zarexusa.com.
