BC Žalgiris

Basketball Club Žalgiris (Lithuanian: Krepšinio Klubas Žalgiris) is a professional basketball team that is based in Kaunas, Lithuania. It is one of the oldest teams in the Euroleague and plays domestically in the Lietuvos krepšinio lyga (LKL). Žalgiris is one of 11 European clubs that hold Euroleague A Licenses, which provide their holders with a guaranteed place in the regular-season phase of the Euroleague.

Since the 2011–12 season, Žalgiris plays its home games in the new Žalgiris Arena, built just before the EuroBasket 2011.

Logo design: a green and white shield with the sign "BC Žalgiris", a basketball, and the letter "Ž". The club's name commemorates the victorious Battle of Žalgiris (Battle of Grunwald) (both names: Žalgiris and Grunwald are translated as "green grove").

History

1944–1982

The club was formed in 1944. The team almost immediately became a power, winning multiple Lithuanian basketball championships, also winning the USSR Premier Basketball League in 1947 and 1951. The team also won silver in the 1949 and 1952 championships, also winning the bronze medals in 1953, 1954, 1955 and 1956. Žalgiris also won the USSR Basketball Cup in 1953. The team was at the time was lead by Stepas Butautas, Vytautas Kulakauskas, Justinas Lagunavičius, Kazimieras Petkevičius, and later, by Stasys Stonkus and Algirdas Lauritėnas.

MRK Žalgiris Kaunas

Moterų Rankinio Klubas Žalgiris Kaunas is a Lithuanian women's handball club from Kaunas.

A founding member of the European Cup in 1961, Žalgiris won three editions in a row between 1967 and 1969 in addition to two Soviet Championships, which makes it one of the most successful Lithuanian teams in overall international competitions. However the team declined subsequently, with Spartak Kiev dominating both competitions for nearly two decades. In 1979 Žalgiris made it into the championship's top three for the last time, with Egle Vilnius becoming the major Lithuanian team in the championship.

Since the break-up of the Soviet Union Žalgiris has played in the Lithuanian League.

Kaunas

Kaunas (/ˈkaʊnəs/; Lithuanian pronunciation: [ˈkɐʊˑn̪ɐs̪]; also see Kaunas' other names) is the second-largest city in Lithuania and has historically been a leading centre of Lithuanian economic, academic, and cultural life. Kaunas was the biggest city and the centre of a county in Trakai Municipality of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania since 1413. In the Russian Empire it was the capital of the Kaunas Governorate from 1843 to 1915. It became the only temporary capital city in Europe during the interwar period. Now it is the capital of Kaunas County, the seat of the Kaunas city municipality and the Kaunas District Municipality. It is also the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Kaunas. Kaunas is located at the confluence of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, and near the Kaunas Reservoir, the largest body of water entirely in Lithuania.

Etymology

The city's name is of Lithuanian origins and most likely derives from a personal name.

Before Lithuania regained independence, the city was generally known in English as Kovno, the traditional Slavicized form of its name; the Polish name is Kowno; the Belarusian name is Koўнa, Kowna. An earlier Russian name was Ковно Kovno, although Каунас Kaunas has been used since 1940. The Yiddish name is Kovne (קאָװנע), while its names in German include Kaunas and Kauen.
