Z User Group

The Z User Group exists to promote use and development of the Z notation, a formal specification language for the description of and reasoning about computer-based systems. It was formally constituted on 14 December 1992 during the ZUM'92 Z User Meeting in London, England.

Meetings and conferences

ZUG has organised a series of Z User Meetings approximately every 18 months. From 2000, these became the ZB Conference (jointly with the B-Method, co-organized with APCB), and from 2008 the ABZ Conference (with Abstract State Machines as well). In 2010, the ABZ Conference also includes Alloy, a Z-like specification language with associated tool support.

Users' group

A users' group (also user's group or user group) is a type of club focused on the use of a particular technology, usually (but not always) computer-related.

Users' groups started in the early days of mainframe computers, as a way to share sometimes hard-won knowledge and useful software, usually written by end users independently of the vendor-supplied programming efforts. SHARE, a user group originated by aerospace industry corporate users of IBM mainframe computers, was founded in 1955 and is the oldest computer user group still active. DECUS, the DEC User's Society, was founded in 1961 and its descendant organization, Connect Worldwide, still operates. The Computer Measurement Group (CMG) was founded in 1974 by systems professionals with a common interest in (mainframe) capacity management, and continues today with a much broader mission. The first UNIX users' group organized in 1978.

Users' groups began to proliferate with the microcomputer revolution of the late 1970s and early 1980s as hobbyists united to help each other with programming and configuration and use of hardware and software. Especially prior to the emergence of the World Wide Web, obtaining technical assistance with computers was often onerous, while computer clubs would gladly provide free technical support. Users' groups today continue to provide "real life" opportunities for learning from the shared experience of the members and may provide other functions such as a newsletter, group purchasing opportunities, tours of facilities, or speakers at group meetings.

Kite Hill

Kite Hill is a Canadian drum, wind, and string troupe formed in January 2008 in Toronto. They combine elements of baroque pop, instrumental and world music.

The band released a single, "Tom Thumbtack," on the Friends in Bellwoods II compilation in August 2009. They are set to release their debut album, Rest & Run in spring 2011. Rest & Run is an exploration of potential and action that forms the first part of the series, "The Wild, Wild World of Wood, Wind and String."

Performances and tours

In August 2009 Kite Hill curated the inaugural edition of Inroads Festival. Inroads Festival focuses on bringing new music to rural communities in Ontario and consists of a "troupe of emerging artists from Toronto" who travel from location to location "in hopes of connecting deeply with the landscape, its people, and their stories." According to the festival's website, the musicians and composers immerse themselves in the community, chairing "story-sharing and song-writing sessions", as well as performing a concert with and for the community. The finale of each concert is the song that was written during the day. In addition to the members of Kite Hill, participants in the festival included The Youngest (Amy Learmonth), Les Arbres (Timothy Fagan), and Casey Mecija of Ohbijou.
