You Are Free is the sixth album by American singer-songwriter Cat Power (a.k.a. Chan Marshall). It was released in 2003 on Matador Records.
The album features guest appearances by Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Nirvana, Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Warren Ellis of the Dirty Three.
You Are Free was recorded over the course of a year, the longest Marshall had spent recording an album at that point. Marshall and engineer Adam Kasper recorded about 40 songs during these sessions.
In a 2003 interview with Pitchfork, Marshall explained the album was recorded "Sporadically. While I was traveling...Adam was working on other things, and I worked on his schedule. He'd get these really nice studios, and when he had off time we'd go in and then try to remember what we did like two months ago and pull that tape up. I'd be like, 'Uh, no, I wanna do something new,' and then I'd write a new song. So it basically worked like that-- every few months getting together and essentially writing new songs." According to Marshall, Kasper helped her decide which of the 40 songs they recorded should make it onto the album.
You Are Free (German: Ihr zent frei) is a 1983 West German short documentary film directed by Dea Brokman, in which five former U.S. Servicemen and a prison camp survivor give accounts of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps in 1945. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Short.

"You Are" is the title of a popular song from 1983 by the singer-songwriter Lionel Richie. "You Are" was written by Richie and his then-wife, Brenda Harvey Richie. It appears on his self-titled debut solo album, which came out in 1982. Resuming where he left off with D-flat major tunes with Commodores' "Sail On", "Still" and "Truly".
Released as the follow-up single to his number-one hit song "Truly", "You Are" reached the top five on three major Billboard music charts. On the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart, the song spent two weeks at number four in early 1983. It peaked at number two on the R&B chart and spent six weeks at number one on the adult contemporary chart. In the United Kingdom, the song reached number 43 on the British pop chart.
"You Are" is a romantic song, although with a more upbeat arrangement than many of Richie's slower ballads, including a horn section. Before achieving popularity for his own music, singer Richard Marx was a studio musician who can be heard singing backing vocals on "You Are" as well as other songs from Richie's debut album. Kenny Rogers and Jimmy Connors are also heard on backing vocals.
I had a dream last night
That we lost the fight
I had a reason to stay in the back of my head
But I still have to say goodbye
Here in this bed
Free, you are free
Free, you are free
You oughta lay down low
Covered in packs of snow
Lay down low
Covered in packs of snow
I had a dream last night
Cold sweatin' woke in a fright
Counted up all the years
And it soon became clear
Despite all the tears you can cry
We're nearing the end
Free, you are free
Free, you are free
Stop telling me the right way to go
I'm on my own
You're selling our old ways
Stop telling me the right way to go
I'm on my own
You're selling our old ways
Stop telling me the right way to go
I'm on my own
You're selling our old ways
Stop telling me the right way to go
I'm on my own
You are free, you are free
Like everything wants to be
Free, you are free
