Spin (Darren Hayes album)

Spin is the first solo album released by ex-Savage Garden member Darren Hayes. The album was mixed by Chris Lord-Alge and produced by Walter Afanasieff. It was released in Australia in March 2002 and reached the rest of the world later that year. The album has sold over two million copies as of 2011.

Background

Hayes, continuing the trend from his years as Savage Garden's frontman, addresses romance on almost every track on the album. Walter Afanasieff, who had already worked on Savage Garden's Affirmation, oversaw the production of the majority of the album, with help from co-producers Greg Bieck, Rick Nowels and Robert Conley. Afanasieff produced five of the twelve tracks on the original release: "Insatiable", "Heart Attack", "Dirty", "Good Enough" and the title track, "Spin"; Bieck produced "Strange Relationship" and "I Miss You"; Nowels produced "Creepin' Up on You", "I Can't Ever Get Enough of You", "Like It or Not" and "What You Like"; and Conley solely produced the track "Crush (1980 Me)". Afanasieff also produced the Australian only bonus track, "The Heart Wants What It Wants", and the UK Collector's Edition bonus tracks, "I Wish U Heaven" and "Can't Help Falling in Love". Till 2006,the album sold 118,000 in United States.

The song received positive critical reviews. Gene Stout of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer described it as "an anthemic tune with a strong hook and a big guitar sound."Billboard's Chuck Taylor wrote that "'Spin' is a wonderfully constructed rock song with a number of different musical subsections, all of which showcase the potent pipes and song-writing skills of lead singer/guitarist Jason Wade ... Lifehouse has managed to drum up a keen balance between pure, guitar-fueled rock and hook-sodden, creatively executed pop – and this song deserves a lengthy stay on the playlists of both formats."

Kites is a 2010 Indian Hindi/Spanish mix language dialogue romantic action thriller film directed by Anurag Basu and produced by Rakesh Roshan, starring Hrithik Roshan, Bárbara Mori, Kangana Ranaut, and Kabir Bedi. The film was released in India and in North America on 21 May 2010. Its 208-theater opening in North America made it the largest Bollywood release up to that time. It was also the first Bollywood movie to reach the weekend top ten, though My Name is Khan had a larger first-weekend North American gross. Reliance Entertainment bought worldwide distribution rights of Kites for whooping ₹150 crore (US$22 million), which is a record sum. Despite a strong opening, The film only managed to collect ₹48.56 crore (US$7.1 million) net in its lifetime run following a critical loss. Plot

Jai (Hrithik Roshan) is a dance teacher in Las Vegas, Nevada. As a sideline, he marries immigrant women to get her green cards. When Gina (Kangana Ranaut), the rich daughter of a powerful casino owner Bob (Kabir Bedi), falls for him, Jai goes along to marry into money. He discovers that his future brother-in-law, the vicious, homicidal Tony (Nicholas Brown), is about to marry a Mexican woman named Natasha (Bárbara Mori), whom Jai knows as Linda, the last of the immigrant women he married. On the night before "Natasha" and Tony's wedding, Linda and Jai spend a romantic but chaste night, humorously agreeing to a "divorce". A jealous, gun-wielding Tony arrives at her apartment while Jai is there. After he hits her, Linda impulsively knocks him out with a heavy object while he tussles with Jai. Linda and Jai go on the run toward Mexico, with Tony and police in pursuit. They are helped by a friend of Jai, Robin (Anand Tiwari). Robin gives them fake passports and IDs so that they can go wherever they want.

Kites (song)

"Kites" is a ballad written by Hal Hackady and Lee Pockriss. It was first recorded by the Rooftop Singers as their last single in 1967.

The song then became a hit for Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, the group of the Shulman brothers who went on to form the progressive band Gentle Giant. Their first releases had not been successful and they looked to their manager, John King, for inspiration. He suggested the Kites ballad, which he had obtained from Robbins' Music. This was not their preferred style but King insisted.

The song was recorded at Abbey Road using unconventional instruments such as a wind machine and included a spoken interlude in Chinese, composed of "sweet nothings" and performed by the actress Jacqui Chan, a friend of the band. The single reached number 8 in the UK in late 1967 and as an exemplar of the early psychedelic rock style it has since appeared on many compilations, especially those themed around psychedelia. It features the Mellotron.

Critical Reception

'Yellow' has received positive reviews in both popular and academic circles. Publisher's Weekly reviewer Jeff Zaleski comments that while many stories deal with difficult subjects, "Hatred and heartbreak...are mitigated by Lee's cool yet sympathetic eye and frequently dark sense of humor". Kathleen Snodgrass of the Georgia Review finds that many of the stories are driven by a male-female dynamic in which she finds the female characters somewhat poorly-written but otherwise found the questions of identity the relationships explored well-presented.
