Yasmin (Persian: یاسمین‎‎ yâsamin) is a feminine given name.

Etymology

Yasmin is the name in Persian for a flowering plant, and from which the name Jasmine derives.

The pronunciation of Yasmin is often parallel with the English Jasmine, but in Persian, Arabic and Turkish the "s" is not taken as a "z", and so is often pronounced as /ˈjæsmɪn/.

Yasmine Lafitte

Yasmine Lafitte (born Hafida El Khabchi, 1 October 1973) is a Moroccan former pornographic actress who performed under the mononym "Yasmine".

Life and career

Born in an observant Muslim family in Tahar Souk, a small village of Morocco, Lafitte moved to France with her family when she was just five months old, and she grew up in a suburb of Lyon. At 18 years old, after graduating from high school, she left her family; during this period, she trained to become a nurse and worked as a waitress to pay for her studies.

In 2004, she entered the adult industry together with her boyfriend at the time, after having replied to a magazine ad of a small production company which was looking for amateur couples. In 2006, she was featured in an episode of the TF1 talk show La Méthode Cauet, then she was requested in newspaper interviews, magazine covers and jet-set events, and she became a spokesmodel for the magazine FHM. In 2007, she signed an exclusive contract with the producer Marc Dorcel. That same year, she had a significant role in Danielle Arbid's film drama A Lost Man, which premiered at the 60th Cannes Film Festival. In 2008, she had a supporting role in Olivier Marchal's crime drama MR 73. After having worked in several international productions, she retired from adult performing in February 2009 to focus her career on traditional films and in production.

Yasmine (singer)

Hilde Rens (3 March 1972 – 25 June 2009), better known by her stage name Yasmine, was a Belgian singer, presenter and television personality.

Career

Music

Rens became known as a singer during the 1980s. At the age of 17, Yasmine made her television debut in 1989 as a contestant on a Flemish television talent show, performing a rendition of Don't Cry for Me Argentina as Julie Covington.

Two years later, she earned a record deal, releasing her first single, "Wie Denk Jij Wel Dat Je Bent" and her first album, Mooi zo in the same year. She went onto record another five mainstream pop albums before releasing Vandaag (Het morgen van gisteren) in 2004, a critically lauded CD of Leonard Cohen songs translated into Dutch.

Her last album, Licht Ontvlambaar, was released in 2006.

Broadcasting

Up until her death, Yasmine was a regular on the VRT's main television station, één, where she was an in-vision continuity announcer and a presenter for various entertainment shows including De Rode Loper, Memento and Zo is er maar één.
