Yank

Yank is a shortened form of Yankee, a slang term (sometimes pejorative) for someone of American origin or heritage. In the United States, the word refers to people in the Northern states.

Yank!

Yank! A WWII Love Story is a 2005 musical with book and lyrics by David Zellnik and music by his brother Joseph. Yank! "tells the story of Stu, a scared Midwestern kid who gets drafted for World War II in 1943, and becomes a photographer for Yank Magazine, the journal 'for and by the servicemen.' Yank! has a score that pays homage to the 1940s and explores what it means to be a man, and what it is to fall in love and struggle."Yank! takes its title from the World War II publication Yank, the Army Weekly.

Production history

The show received a workshop production as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2005. The workshop featured Doug Kreeger, Jeffry Denman, Julie Foldesi, Tally Sessions and Ivan Hernandez. It was directed by Igor Goldin and choreographed by Chase Brock.

A full production of Yank! was mounted at Brooklyn's Gallery Players in the fall of 2007. The production starred Bobby Steggert, Nancy Anderson, Tyson Kaup, James Stover, Daniel Shevlin, Chris Carfizzi, and Maxime de Toledo. Jeffry Denman appeared again and also choreographed. Igor Goldin again directed. This production received the New York Innovative Theatre Award for Best Musical.

Yank, the Army Weekly

Yank, the Army Weekly was a weekly magazine published by the United States military during World War II. The idea for the magazine came from Egbert White, who had worked on Stars and Stripes during World War I. He proposed the idea to the Army in early 1942, and accepted a commission as Lieutenant Colonel. White was the overall commander, Major Franklin S. Forsberg was the business manager and Major Hartzell Spence was the first editor. White was removed from the Yank staff because of disagreements about articles which had appeared. Soon afterward, Spence was also assigned to other duties and Joe McCarthy became the editor.

The first issue was published with the cover date of June 17, 1942. The magazine was written by enlisted rank soldiers only and was made available to the soldiers, sailors, and airmen serving overseas. It was published at facilities around the world—British, Mediterranean, Continental, and Western Pacific—for a total of 21 editions in 17 countries. Yank was the most widely read magazine in the history of the U.S. military, achieving a worldwide circulation of more than 2.6 million. Each issue was priced from five cents to 10 cents because it was felt that if soldiers paid, they would have a higher regard for the publication. Each issue was edited in New York City and then shipped for printing around the world where staff editors added local stories. The last issue was published in December 1945. Scott Corbett (later known as a writer of novels for children) served as the last editor.

Yank (automobile)

The Yank was a vehicle made by Custom Auto Works, a company based in San Diego, California, in 1950. Being what could be described as a poor man's sports car, it was an inexpensive, though rather attractive, aluminum-bodied car. It was powered by a 63 brake horsepower (47 kW), 134.2-cubic-inch-displacement Willys four-cylinder L-head engine mated to a three-speed manual transmission. It cost $1,000 from the factory, weighed 1,500 pounds (680 kg), and had a wheelbase of 100 inches (2,540 mm) .
