Yale (company)

Yale is a lock manufacturer owned by Assa Abloy. It is associated with the pin tumbler lock, which is often known as the Yale lock.

History

The business was founded as the Yale Lock Manufacturing Co. in Stamford, Connecticut in 1868 by Linus Yale, Jr., the inventor of the pin tumbler lock, and Henry R. Towne.

The name was later changed to Yale & Towne. Linus Yale, Sr. registered 8 patents with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office between 1843 - 1857 about his pin tumbler safe lock, safe lock, bank lock, vault and safe door bolt and padlock.

In the twentieth century the company expanded worldwide through purchases, acquisitions and joint ventures with other companies in the industry and employed more than 12,000 people.

It established a British operation by acquiring the business of H&T Vaughan, a long-established lock manufacturer in Wood Street, Willenhall, the historic centre of the British lock industry, and became the major employer in the town. "Yale locks" became the generic term in the UK for pin-tumbler household locks and keys, although Yale neglected the service business and effectively gave away the lucrative aftermarket business in replacement key-blanks, which sold in the millions annually.

Company (Heroes)

The Company refers to a fictional covert international organization in the NBC drama Heroes. Its primary purpose is to identify, monitor and study those individuals with genetically-derived special abilities. The Company played a central role in the plot of Volume Two, during the second season of the series. It is a very notable organization in the series and is connected to several of the characters.

Founders

In season two, Kaito Nakamura revealed that there were twelve founders of the Company, and a photo of the twelve is later seen (listed below under "Group photo"); it did not include Adam Monroe, an immortal human with the ability of rapid cellular regeneration, who is described as the one who "brought them all together." The Company began sometime between January 1977 and February 14, 1977. Monroe was locked away for thirty years on November 2, 1977, concluding that he only spent about 10 to 11 months with the Company. In the first season of the show, Daniel Linderman heads the Company until his demise. He is substituted in the second season by Bob Bishop, who is implied to be the Company's financial source. However, when Sylar kills him in the beginning of Season 3, Angela Petrelli takes over. Several of the founders have children who are posthumans and who are main characters within the series.

Yale Atlético Clube

Yale Atlético Clube, usually called Yale, was one of the first sports club in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It was founded on August 7, 1910, by Italian immigrants, but is no longer in existence. It supplied the city with many different sport teams, one of them was football. They played in the Campeonato de Belo Horizonte (Belo Horizonte Championship) - which is now the Campeonato Mineiro - until 1925, that's the year it gave up football. Yale eventually split and part of it became the Palestra Itália of Minas, a team which was created to compete with many of the bigger teams in Belo Horizonte like America, Atlético, and Yale itself. Yale separation into the Palestra caused many of Yales footballers to join the Palestra a team which later became Cruzeiro, a team that now plays in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A, Brazil's premier football league. In conclusion it can be said that the team that was once Yale became the Cruzeiro of today.

Yale (typeface)

Yale is an old style serif typeface designed by Matthew Carter and first released in 2004. It was commissioned by Yale University for use in all of its signage, promotional and internal material.

In 2010, Yale was named one of the "Ten Typefaces of the Decade" by Print magazine. It is influenced by Bembo, a popular book typeface by Monotype, and is also similar to Carter's previous ITC Galliard.

Design

Carter, who has taught at the Yale School of Art since 1976, currently holding the rank of Senior Critic, was asked to design a universal typeface for Yale University by John Gambell, the University Printer Yale was first designed for signage on all Yale University buildings. Carter's first priority was therefore readability, as well as a balance between dignity and uniqueness. Carter has said that this was the first time in designing a typeface that he focused more on capital than lowercase letters, since he knew that on the building signs the lettering would be in capitals. Yale (electoral district)

Yale was a federal electoral district in British Columbia, Canada, that was represented in the Canadian House of Commons from 1872 to 1892 and from 1917 to 1953.

It first appeared when the original Yale District riding, which was created and filled by special byelection in 1871 at the time of BC's entry into the Canadian Confederation, was abolished and replaced by "Yale" riding. Yale riding spanned both Yale and Kootenay Land Districts, that is to say, the entirety of the southern province from the Fraser Canyon to the Rockies. It was last used in the 1891 election, and was merged in 1892 with the Cariboo riding to form Yale—Cariboo.

That arrangement lasted until 1914 when a further redistribution separated Yale and Cariboo once again. This second incarnation was considerably smaller than the first because Kootenay district was now in a different riding. In 1903, the riding of Kootenay was split off from what had been the original Yale riding.

The "new" Yale riding excluded the Town of Yale, and when it was reconstituted, coincided with the provincial Okanagan riding except for the city of Salmon Arm.
