Yahoo! Screen

Yahoo! Screen was an on-demand streaming service for TV shows, movies, webisodes and other new media from Yahoo!. The homepage contained editorially-featured videos that changed daily and skewed towards comedy, current events and viral videos. The service had more than 1,000 hours of programming when it went live in September 2013. Due to low viewership and financial writeoffs in 2015, the service was closed in January 2016.

History

Yahoo! Screen began as Yahoo! Video, a video sharing website on which users could upload and share videos. At launch, Yahoo! Video was an internet-wide video search engine. Yahoo added the ability to upload and share video clips in June 2006. A re-designed site was launched in February 2008 that changed the focus to Yahoo!-hosted video only.

On December 15, 2010, Yahoo! Video's functionality to upload video was removed for its relaunch as Yahoo! Screen the following year. All user-generated content was removed on March 15, 2011. The content that Yahoo! deleted was saved by the Archive Team. The Yahoo! Screen rebrand was launched October 2011, alongside eight original programs. Yahoo! Screen has streamed three seasons of its Emmy-nominated original series, Burning Love, which was syndicated for TV through E! in 2013.

Screen is a leading weekly film magazine, published in India. Established in 1951, it is owned by The Indian Express publishing group. The content focuses on India's Hindi film industry, a.k.a. Bollywood, located mainly in Mumbai. It also has an e-magazine version.

History

Screen was first published on 26 September 1951 with Manorama Katju as its managing editor. She was succeeded in 1959 by S.S. Pillai who died in office in 1977. The magazines was started by the Indian Express newspaper group.

B. K. Karanjia who was previously editor of Filmfare, stayed Screen editor for 10 years.Udaya Tara Nayar, rose the ranks within Screen Magazine and became the editor between 1988-1996 and 1998-2000. Veteran film journalist, Bhawana Somaaya was the editor of the magazine (2000-2007). In 2007 she was replaced by Ex- Society Magazine and HT Style/Saturday editor Priyanka Sinha Jha who remains the editor till date.

Screen Awards

Screen organizes and sponsors the Screen Awards for movies in Hindi cinema, established in 1995. It also sponsors Screen Gold Medal for excellence in direction at the Film and Television Institute, established in 1967.

Blend modes

Blend modes (or Mixing modes) in digital image editing are used to determine how two layers are blended into each other. The default blend mode in most applications is simply to hide the lower layer with whatever is present in the top layer. However, as each pixel has a numerical representation, a large number of ways to blend two layers is possible. Note that the top layer is not necessarily called a "layer" in the application. It may be applied with a painting or editing tool.

Most graphics editing programs, like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP, allow the user to modify the basic blend modes - for example by applying different levels of opacity to the top picture.

Normal blend mode

This is the standard blend mode which uses the top layer alone, without mixing its colors with the layer beneath it.

Where a is the value of a color channel in the underlying layer, and b is that of the corresponding channel of the upper layer. The result is most typically merged into the bottom layer using "simple" (b over a) alpha compositing, but other Porter-Duff operations are possible. The compositing step results in the top layer's shape, as defined by its alpha channel, appearing over the bottom layer.

Yahoo is a Brazilian rock band formed in 1988.

History

Yahoo was founded in 1988 by guitarist Robertinho do Recife. It was fairly successful in Brazil during the 1990s by playing cover versions of other bands' hard rock songs translated to Portuguese. Many of their songs were also used in soundtracks of telenovelas.

Their self-titled debut album, Yahoo, had the Def Leppard's hit "Love Bites" translated as "Mordidas de Amor", and was used in the soundtrack of the telenovela Bebê a Bordo.

The next album, Oração da Vitória ("Victory Prayer"), brought them another hit, "Anjo" (cover of Aerosmith's "Angel"), again used in a telenovela, O Sexo dos Anjos.

In 1990, Yahoo released the album Yahoo 3. It was not as successful as the previous ones, but two songs, "Veneno" ("Poison") and "Somos a Luz da Manhã" ("We are the Morning Light"), were used in the soundtrack of a movie, Sonho de Verão.

Yahoo released the album Pára-Raio in 1992, with several cover songs, such as "Pára-Raio" ("Lightning Rod", a version of "Hide You Heart" by Kiss) and "Como o Vento" ("Like the Wind", a version of "Wind of Change" by Scorpions); the song "Paixão Esquecida" ("Forgotten Passion") was again used in a telenovela, Deus nos Acuda.

Round Heads and Pointed Heads

Round Heads and Pointed Heads (German: Die Rundköpfe und die Spitzköpfe) is an epic parable play written by the German dramatist Bertolt Brecht, in collaboration with Margarete Steffin, Emil Burri, Elisabeth Hauptmann, and the composer Hanns Eisler. The play's subtitle is Money Calls to Money and its authors describe it as "a tale of horror." The play is a satirical anti-Nazi parable about a fictitious country called Yahoo in which the rulers maintain their control by setting the people with round heads against those with pointed heads, thereby substituting racial relations for their antagonistic class relations. The play is composed of 11 scenes in prose and blank verse and 13 songs. Unlike another of Brecht's plays from this period, The Mother, Round Heads and Pointed Heads was addressed to a wide audience, Brecht suggested, and took account of "purely entertainment considerations." Brecht's notes on the play, written in 1936, contain the earliest theoretical application of his "defamiliarization" principle to his own "non-Aristotelian" drama.
