Xtra (ISP)

Xtra Limited (now branded as part of Spark New Zealand) is New Zealand's largest Internet service provider (ISP). It was founded in 1996 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Spark New Zealand (formerly Telecom New Zealand). Xtra has provided dial-up Internet access throughout New Zealand since its inception in May 1996. In 1999 it created New Zealand's first ADSL service.

The name Xtra was also used with the separate entity Yahoo!Xtra, a joint venture web portal between Telecom (49% stake) and Yahoo!7 (51% stake) from 2007 to 2011. The venture was formed in December 2006 replacing the XtraMSN web portal and included additional features for Xtra broadband customers.

In 2008 Telecom dropped the Xtra brand name from products and services, using Telecom instead (Xtra broadband became Telecom broadband for example).

History and trading practices

In 1999 Telecom created New Zealand's only ADSL service. Telecom later allowed other ISPs to access its ADSL networks (under increasing government and public pressure), although some claimed that Telecom provided unfair and monopolistic terms of trade regarding its wholesale ADSL services.

History

The Internet was developed as a network between government research laboratories and participating departments of universities. By the late 1980s, a process was set in place towards public, commercial use of the Internet. The remaining restrictions were removed by 1995, 4 years after the introduction of the World Wide Web.

In 1989, the first ISPs were established in Australia and the United States. In Brookline, Massachusetts, The World became the first commercial ISP in the US. Its first customer was served in November 1989.

Xtra!

Xtra! is a gay internet magazine and former print newspaper published by Pink Triangle Press in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Printed on newsprint in tabloid format since its establishment in 1984, Pink Triangle Press announced on January 14, 2015 that the paper edition will be discontinued and the publication will continue in an exclusively digital media format. The final print issues of Xtra Vancouver and Xtra Ottawa appeared on February 12, 2015, while the Toronto edition's final print issue was published on the newspaper's 31st anniversary, February 19, 2015.

History and content

Xtra! was founded in Toronto on February 19, 1984 (with a March cover date) by Pink Triangle Press, a not-for-profit organization. It was introduced as a four-page tabloid, as a way to broaden PTP's Toronto readership. Pink Triangle Press had previously published The Body Politic.

Xtra!'s managing editor is Matthew DiMera. Brandon Matheson is Xtra's publisher. Previous managing editors included Paul Gallant and Eleanor Brown.

Halifax College, York

Halifax College is the largest college of the University of York. It was founded in 2001 and is named after Edward Frederick Lindley Wood, the 1st Earl of Halifax.

There is a diverse and vibrant student community with a wide range of events and activities for anyone and everyone. It has a great community spirit, whilst having excellent links between both main university campuses via the UB1 shuttle bus.

The College is situated to the south of the main campus, next to the village of Heslington and the University sports fields.

In 2006/07, Halifax College won the University's College Sport Championship; and successfully held onto the title in the 2007/08 and 2008/09 seasons. They regained the title in the 2010/11 season.

History

In the 1990s the University began to rapidly expand, almost doubling in size from 4,300 to 8,500 students, The expansion of student numbers resulted in the creation of more accommodation by the University which was named Halifax Court. The first blocks of Halifax College which formed Ingram, Irwin, Younger, Lindley and Wood Courts were built in the summer of 1996. The members of Halifax Court were members of other colleges however soon formed their own Junior Common Room; the lack of any tie between the campus, colleges, and the houses in Halifax Court led the members form their own Junior Common Room and to demands that Halifax Court be given full college status. In 2002 Halifax Court was made a full College of the University and was renamed as 'Halifax College'.
