Xing Kong

Xing Kong is a Mandarin-language TV channel owned by STAR TV in partnership with China Media Capital, also known as STAR Chinese Channel China, It was voted "Satellite Channel of the Year" at the 2002 China Television Programme Awards. The channel is packed with more than 700 hours of original programming each year, with content that includes drama series, comedies, variety, talk and game shows. This channel was similar to other mandarin entertainment channels like STAR Chinese Channel in Taiwan and Phoenix Chinese Channel a 50/50 joint venture with STAR TV/Fox International Channels and Phoenix Television.

Xing Kong is currently available in Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Xing Kong is available as free-to-view on AsiaSat 3S over the Asia-Pacific region (given that the local laws permit the use of privately owned satellite dishes).

Xingó Dam

The Xingó Dam is a concrete face rock-fill dam on the São Francisco River on the border of Alagoas and Sergipe, near Piranhas, Brazil. The dam was built for navigation, water supply and hydroelectric power generation as it supports a 3,162 megawatts (4,240,000 hp) power station. It was constructed between 1987 and 1994 and the last of its generators was commissioned in 1997.

Construction

Studies for the Xingó Dam were done in the 1950s and contracts for construction were not awarded until 1982. Construction on the dam began in March 1987 but stopped in September 1988 because a debt crisis stalled funding. Construction commenced again in 1990 and by 1994, the dam was complete. On June 10, 1994, the dam began to impound the river as its reservoir began to fill. On November 15 of that year, the reservoir reached its maximum level of 130 metres (430 ft). The power station's first generator was commissioned in December 1994, the next two in 1995, two more in 1996 and the final generator in August 1997.

Xing (state)

The State of Xíng was a vassal state of ancient China during the Zhou Dynasty (1046–221 BCE) and Spring and Autumn Period (770–475 BC), ruled by descendants of the Jí family (姬). Its original location was on the plain east of the Shanxi plateau and north of most of the other states.

History

Sometime between 1046 and 1043 BCE, King Wu of Zhou granted lands around modern day Xingtai City, to Pengshu of Xing (邢朋叔)，who was the fourth son of the Duke of Zhou. In 662 BCE Duke Huan of Qi forced the people of Xing south east into Hebei Province to a place known as Yiyi (夷仪) (modern day Liaocheng City, Shandong about 90 miles east south-east of Xingtai). In 635 BCE, during the rule of Duke Yuan of Xing, the State of Xing was wiped out by the State of Wei.

King Kong (2005 film)

King Kong is a 2005 epic monster film co-written, produced, and directed by Peter Jackson. A remake of the 1933 film of the same name, the film stars Naomi Watts, Jack Black, Adrien Brody, and, through motion capture, Andy Serkis as the title character. Set in 1933, King Kong tells the story of an overly ambitious filmmaker who coerces his cast and hired ship crew to travel to the mysterious Skull Island. There they encounter Kong, a legendary giant gorilla, whom they capture and display in New York City, with tragic results.

The film's budget climbed from an initial US$150 million to a then-record-breaking $207 million. It was released on December 14, 2005 in Germany and on December 16 in the United States, and made an opening of $50.1 million. While it performed lower than expected, King Kong made domestic and worldwide grosses that eventually added up to $550 million, becoming the fourth-highest grossing film in Universal Pictures history. It also generated $100 million in DVD sales upon its home video release. The film garnered generally positive reviews from critics and appeared on several "top ten" lists for 2005, though some reviewers criticized it for its three-hour running time. Kong (surname)

Kong (孔) is a Chinese, Korean, and Cambodian surname. It can also be written as Kung in Taiwan, Hung in Hong Kong, Khổng in Vietnam, and Gong in Korea. There are around 2.1 million people with this surname in China in 2002, representing 0.23% of the population.

This surname Kong is most notable as the surname of Confucius and his descendants. The family tree of Confucius and his descendants is generally considered to be the world longest, covering over 2,500 years with more than 80 generations recorded, and has two million entries according to its last update in 2009. The main line of descent traditionally held the title of Duke Yansheng, which was changed to the title of the first Sacrificial Official to Confucius in the 20th century. This title is currently held by Kung Tsui-chang.

Kong may also be the English transliteration of a rare Chinese surname 空, or a less common form of the Gong surnames such as 龔, 貢 and 弓.

Origin

The character for the Kong surname was derived from the Zi (子) family name. The founder of the Shang Dynasty, Tang of Shang whose family name was Zi, had the courtesy name of Taiyi (太乙). His descendants fused the character Zi (子) to Yi (乙), forming the character Kong (孔) which eventually became a surname. It first appeared during the Zhou Dynasty as the courtesy name Kongfu (孔父) of a noble in the State of Song named Jia (嘉), said to be a descendant of the Tang of Shang. Kongfu Jia was murdered, and his son escaped to the State of Lu where he adopted Kong as the name of his clan. His family settled in Qufu and Confucius was one of his descendants.
