Administrative subdivision of Rome

The administrative subdivision of Rome consists of the 15 sub-municipalities (municipi) of Rome's municipality. Originally, the city was divided into 20 sub-municipalities, but the XIV, what is now the Comune di Fiumicino, voted in 1992 to become a full municipality itself and eventually detached from Rome. Then on 11 March 2013 the municipalities were reduced from 19 to 15.

History

Since 1972 the city has been divided into administrative areas, called municipi (singular: municipio), until 2001 named circoscrizioni. They were created for administrative reasons to increase decentralisation in the city. Each municipio is governed by a president and a council of four members who are elected by its residents every five years. The municipi frequently cross the boundaries of the traditional, non-administrative divisions of the city.

The municipi where originally 20, becoming 19 in 1992 after a referendum and the subsequent separation of Fiumicino (XIX Circoscrizione) into an independent Comune. In 2013 their number has been reduced to 15.

Municipio

Municipio (Spanish: [muniˈθipjo], Italian: [muniˈtʃiːpjo]) and município (Portuguese: [muniˈsipiu]) are country subdivisions in Italy and several Hispanophone and Lusophone nations, respectively. They are often translated as "municipality". In the English language, a municipality often is defined as relating to a single city or town; however, in Spanish, the term "municipio" may not mean a single city or town, but rather a jurisdiction housing several towns and cities, like a township, county, borough, or civil parish. The Italian term "municipalità" refers either to a single city or a group of cities and towns in a township, but the Portuguese use is almost entirely restricted to group of cities or towns like in a county, township, and so forth.

Municipalities of Mexico

Municipalities (municipios in Spanish) are the second-level administrative division in Mexico, where the first-level administrative division is the state (Spanish: estado). There are 2,438 municipalities in Mexico, with an average population 45,616. The internal political organization and their responsibilities are outlined in the 115th article of the 1917 Constitution and further expanded in the constitutions of the states to which they belong.

Structure

All Mexican states are divided into municipalities. Each municipality is administratively autonomous; citizens elect a "municipal president" (presidente municipal) who heads an ayuntamiento or municipal council, responsible for providing all the public services for their constituents. This concept, which originated after the Mexican Revolution, is known as a municipio libre ("free municipality"). A municipal president heads the ayuntamiento (municipal council). The municipal president is elected by plurality and cannot be reelected for the next immediate term. The municipal council consists of a cabildo (chairman) with a síndico and several regidores (trustees).

Municipio (Naples Metro)

Municipio is an underground metro station that serves Line 1 of the Naples Metro, and in future will serve Line 6 of the metro system. It is located in the quarters of Porto. The station opened on 2 June 2015.
