WSGE operates at 91.7 FM and is a non-commercial, public radio station owned and managed by Gaston College, in Dallas, North Carolina. The station's studio is located in the Craig Arts & Sciences building. Its signal covers 26 North and South Carolina counties with a population of 1.3 million residents.
WSGE signed on the air in October 1980 with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts. In January 2005, the college approved a lease with Clear Channel Communications for space on their nearby tall tower. The transmitting antenna is now at a height of 806 feet versus the previous just under 200 feet height on the former tower. With approval from the Federal Communications Commission, on June 27, 2005, the station increased its power to 6,000 watts.[1] On September 26, 2006, the FCC granted permission to WSGE to increase its power again to 7,500 watts.
WSGE identifies itself as "Your Eclectic Music Station." A large portion of its music programming consists of Adult Album Alternative [AAA] formatted music with special emphasis on local, independent musicians and live in-studio performances. Other programing reflects a diversity of styles represented on various "theme" programs. Classic rock is featured every Saturday night featuring mostly album cuts from the classic album rock era of the 60's and 70's. Beach music is played on Friday evenings and Saturday daytime. Saturday afternoons also feature blues music. Sunday's programming consists of gospel music in the morning, classic corner late morning and early afternoon followed by big band music for the rest of the afternoon.
