Would?

"Would?" is a song by Alice in Chains that was produced, engineered, and mixed by Rick Parashar. The song first appeared on the soundtrack to the 1992 movie Singles—in which the members of Alice in Chains make a cameo appearance—and later appeared on the band's album Dirt, also released in 1992. The song was included on the compilation albums Nothing Safe: Best of the Box (1999), Music Bank (1999), Greatest Hits (2001), and The Essential Alice in Chains (2006).

Lyrics

The song, written by guitarist/co-vocalist Jerry Cantrell, concerns the late lead singer of Mother Love Bone, Andrew Wood, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. In the liner notes of 1999's Music Bank box set collection, Jerry Cantrell said of the song:

Release and reception

“Would?” was released as a single in 1992, coinciding with the release of the movie Singles. The song peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The UK single was released in January 1993 and reached the top twenty in the UK and the top forty in the Netherlands. It is one of the band's most well-known songs.

English modal verbs

The modal verbs of English are a small class of auxiliary verbs used mostly to express modality (properties such as possibility, obligation, etc.). They can be distinguished from other verbs by their defectiveness (they do not have participle or infinitive forms) and by the fact that they do not take the ending -(e)s in the third-person singular.

The principal English modal verbs are can, could, may, might, must, shall, should, will and would. Certain other verbs are sometimes, but not always, classed as modals; these include ought, had better, and (in certain uses) dare and need. Verbs which share some but not all of the characteristics of the principal modals are sometimes called "semimodals".

Modal verbs and their features

The verbs customarily classed as modals in English have the following properties:

  • They do not inflect, except insofar as some of them come in present–past (present–preterite) pairs. They do not add the ending -(e)s in the third-person singular (the present-tense modals therefore follow the preterite-present paradigm).

    Would

    by: Alice In Chains

Know me, broken by my master
Teach thee, on child of love hereafter
    Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Drifting body, it's sole desertion
Flying, not yet quite the notion
    Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Into the flood again
Same old trip it was back then
So I made a big mistake
Try to see it once my way
    Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone and left you here alone?
    Am I wrong?
Have I run too far to get home?
Have I gone and left you here alone?
