"3 A.M." (written "3 am" on the album and "3 AM" on the single) is the third single and the third track from Matchbox Twenty's debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You. It topped the Canadian RPM record charts in early 1998.

Background and content

This song was written by Rob Thomas, Jay Stanley, John Leslie Goff and Brian Yale while performing together in the early 1990s band Tabitha's Secret. The lyrics are inspired by Thomas as an adolescent having to live with a mother fighting to survive cancer.

Music video

The video (directed by Gavin Bowden) features the band sitting on sides of a street next to some telephone booths. A supermarket is also shown. The video switches from color video images to black-and-white images. During the introduction and the third verse of the song, Thomas walks in the middle of the street with some construction signs and lights. During the third verse, a car stops with a bare-chested man and a woman inside. The man walks out, revealing a catheter in his chest, and is handed three cigarettes by Thomas. Finally, during the last two choruses, the band is shown playing their instruments ending with an image of Thomas standing next to the telephone booths.

It usually took the form of a double corkscrew-shaped piece of iron on the end of a long pole that could be twisted down the barrel to pick up any debris left over from the previous firing of the weapon.

Fictional character biography

Worm was a Savage Land dweller, recruited by the mutant Zaladane to join the Savage Land Mutates as a warrior. He has the ability to secrete a liquid from his hands that, when it comes into contact with the flesh of a victim, adheres to the brain tissue and allows Worm to assume control of the victim. Zaladane employed Worm to amass a large army of prisoners composed mostly of Savagae Land natives turned into slaves. This army attacked the X-Men, which allowed Worm to assume control over Colossus, Dazzler, Polaris, and their ally Ka-Zar. The heroes were eventually able to break Worm's control, and defeated Zaladane and the Savage Land Mutates.

With the other Savage Land Mutates, Worm aided Zaladane in battle against Magneto, Ka-Zar, and their allies; Worm used his powers over most of Zaladane's army. Worm transferred his psionic control over his victims Shanna and Nereel to Brainchild. Worm was captured by Ka-Zar and his allies, and his powers were temporarily absorbed by Rogue and used by her to restore his victims' free will.

Plot

Small town journalist, Posey Mapleton, does a Special Report on Fantasites, a genetically-engineered parasite that allows users to once again dream - an ability they all lost 30 years ago. Seeing the new miracle product as a way escape his boring life, socially inept, maintenance man, Charles, attempts to purchase Fantasites but discovers he can only afford the cheaper Economy version as opposed to the highly sought after Premium. When his Economy worms aren’t enough to impress his neighbor, Reed (a Premium user), Charles considers giving up Fantasites all together. But when a delivery of Premium worms are left outside Reed’s apartment, Charles decides to start swapping them for his undesired Economy worms. With the Premium Fantasites in his possession, Charles is finally able to live out his wildest fantasies.
