World view

A comprehensive world view or worldview is the fundamental cognitive orientation of an individual or society encompassing the entirety of the individual or society's knowledge and point of view. A world view can include natural philosophy; fundamental, existential, and normative postulates; or themes, values, emotions, and ethics. The term is a calque of the German word Weltanschauung [ˈvɛlt.ʔanˌʃaʊ.ʊŋ], composed of Welt ('world') and Anschauung ('view' or 'outlook') The German word is also used in English.

It is a concept fundamental to German philosophy and epistemology and refers to a wide world perception. Additionally, it refers to the framework of ideas and beliefs forming a global description through which an individual, group or culture watches and interprets the world and interacts with it.

Origins

Linguistics

The founder of the idea that language and worldview are inextricable is the Prussian philologist, Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835). Humboldt argued that language was part of the creative adventure of mankind. Culture, language and linguistic communities developed simultaneously, he argued, and could not do so without one another. In stark contrast to linguistic determinism, which invites us to consider language as a constraint, a framework or a prison house, Humboldt maintained that speech is inherently and implicitly creative. Human beings take their place in speech and continue to modify language and thought by their creative exchanges. Worldview remains a confused and confusing concept in English, used very differently by linguists and sociologists. It is for this reason that Underhill suggests five subcategories: world-perceiving, world-conceiving, cultural mindset, personal world, and perspective (see Underhill 2009, 2011 & 2012).

Worldview (radio show)

Worldview is Chicago Public Media's daily international-affairs radio show, hosted by Jerome McDonnell. It features conversations about international issues as well as their local connections. It airs a series every Thursday called "Global Activism," in which Midwesterners involved in international advocacy and suggested by listeners are interviewed.

It airs at noon, CT (UTC-6), and is re-broadcast at 9:00 p.m. It is also aired daily on XMPR, channel 133 at 1:00 a.m. ET (UTC-5), 10:00 p.m. PT (UTC-8).

The program is distributed by both National Public Radio and Public Radio International.

WorldView-3

WorldView-3 is a commercial Earth observation satellite owned by DigitalGlobe. It was launched on August 13, 2014, to become DigitalGlobe's sixth satellite in orbit, joining Ikonos which was launched in 1999, QuickBird in 2001, WorldView-1 in 2007, GeoEye-1 in 2008, and WorldView-2 in 2009. WorldView-3 provides commercially available panchromatic imagery of 0.31 m (12 in) resolution, eight-band multispectral imagery with 1.24 m (4 ft 1 in) resolution, shortwave infrared imagery at 3.7 m (12 ft 2 in) resolution, and CAVIS (Clouds, Aerosols, Vapors, Ice, and Snow) data at 30 m (98 ft) resolution.

Launch

WorldView-3 was launched on August 13, 2014, from Vandenberg Air Force Base on an Atlas V flying in the 401 configuration. The launch vehicle is provided by the United Launch Alliance and launch services were administered by Lockheed Martin.
