Wooster High School (Ohio)

Wooster High School is a public high school in Wooster, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Wooster City School District. The mascot/nickname of the school is the Generals, named after American Revolutionary War General David Wooster.

Wooster's football rivalry with the Orrville High School Red Riders is the oldest rivalry in Wayne County, having first met back in 1903. The Generals currently lead the rivalry by a 52-42-9 margin. After the 2014 season, the teams have met 104 times.

Ohio High School Athletic Association State Championships

After finishing 2nd in the State in 1979 Wooster HS came back and won the state championship in 1980, which has been the only OHSAA team championship in the school's history.

Wooster High School has 22 athletic teams, of which 11 are for boys and 11 are for girls, which compete in the Ohio Cardinal Conference of the Ohio High School Athletic Association. Wooster's teams are dubbed the "Generals".

Earl Wooster High School

Earl Wooster High School , or Wooster High School (WHS), is a public secondary school in Reno, Nevada that is a part of the Washoe County School District. Its mascot is the Colt and the school colors are scarlet, white, and silver. As of the 2010 school year, Wooster was ranked 177th on Newsweek magazine's list of the 1500 best U.S. high schools. It is currently part of the International Baccalaureate program.

History

Earl Wooster High School, named after an early Washoe County School District president and psychologist, is mostly known for its athletic achievements, although its scholastic standards were high as well. Wooster produced a Presidential Scholar, the highest scholastic award for a high school senior, in 1965 (Doug Samuelson) and again in 1967 (Tony Moore), and a number of other awards. For many years between the 1970s and late 1990s, Wooster dominated varsity football, baseball, and wrestling. In recent years Wooster's notability has shifted from a concentration on its athletics to its academic achievements. This is likely due to the addition of the International Baccalaureate program in 1996. Since that time, hundreds of students have used this program to further their education in college and beyond. It has been called "a very innovative, healthy environment for students and a truly refreshing climate for tomorrows leaders."

The term "high school" originated in Scotland, with the world's oldest high school being Edinburgh's Royal High School from 1505. The Royal High School was used as a model for the first public high school in the United States, Boston Latin School founded in Boston, Massachusetts.

The precise stage of schooling provided by a high school differs from country to country, and may vary within the same jurisdiction. In all of New Zealand and Malaysia, along with most of Britain and parts of Australia, Bangladesh and Canada, high school means the same thing as secondary school, but instead of starting in 9th grade, these "secondary schools" begin at ages 11 or 12.

In Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory, the term "high school" generally refers to Years 7–10, whereas the term "College" is used for Years 11–12. In Victoria the term "secondary college" has largely replaced the term "high school" following the reforms of the Labor Government in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some schools have retained the name "high school" (such as Melbourne High School) and many have now dropped the "secondary" and are simply known as "college".

In most jurisdictions, secondary education in the United States refers to the last four years of statutory formal education (grade nine through grade twelve) either at high school or split between a final year of 'junior high school' and three in high school.

History

The United States historically had a demand for general skills rather than specific training/apprenticeships. High school enrollment increased when schools at this level became free, laws required children to attend until a certain age, and it was believed that every American student had the opportunity to participate regardless of their ability.

In 1892, in response to many competing academic philosophies being promoted at the time, a working group of educators, known as the "Committee of Ten" was established by the National Education Association. It recommended twelve years of instruction, consisting of eight years of elementary education followed by four years of high school. Rejecting suggestions that high schools should divide students into college-bound and working-trades groups from the start, and in some cases also by race or ethnic background, they unanimously recommended that "every subject which is taught at all in a secondary school should be taught in the same way and to the same extent to every pupil so long as he pursues it, no matter what the probable destination of the pupil may be, or at what point his education is to cease."
