The station started as in the late 1970's as WSGF (95SGF), a Top 40-leaning adult contemporary station. The station was highly successful against other competitors such as 1400 AM and Z102. By 1983, seeing the gap left by Wave 97 when they dropped album rock earlier that year, WSGF became WIXV and added more hard rock to the playlist. By 1986 I-95 became Savannah's full-time rock station.
The format is about 70% general classic rock with about 30% newer artists such as Nickelback, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, Shinedown and the Black Crowes.
In 2005-2006 the night DJ was named "Caveman"[1] and was #1 nights for 2 years. Don Scott (who moved from Miami to Savannah) became the stations Program Director and from that point on, I-95 has remained the dominant leader in the rock format. I-95 continues to be "The ROCK of Savannah" with John Boy and Billy, Don Scott, and Jay Sinclair.
WIXV has maintained their major market sound even though located in the smaller market of Savannah. Leading the pack in promotions giving away cruises, motorcycles, trucks, cash and concert tickets. They were also the first to have a live band on their float during the city's huge St. Patrick's Day Parade.
In the latest ratings and for most of the past decade, WIXV beat Alternative WFXH-FM (Rock 106.1) and many of the other non-urban stations in the key demo of 25-54.Having a huge & loyal following for many years. [2]
The station takes its branding from Interstate 95, which runs through the Savannah area, only skirting city proper on the west.
